Nova Masters Swimming (Orange County, CA)

SAN DIEGO, CA - August 24, 2003. Nova Masters & Triathlon Head Coach Michael Collins was first overall at the 2003 Imperial Beach Sprint Triathlon. The course consisted of a 1K Open Water Swim, 15K Bike, & 5K Run. Collins won in 54:00 by a heafty 2:44 margin. Nova Swimmer & Traithlete Scott Pickford placed 3rd in the 35-39 age group (1:00:22). MISSION VIEJO - The Irvine Novaquatic Masters swimmers won a tight battle with the Mission Viejo Natadores Masters at the 2003 Southwest Zone Long Course Championships held at Mission Viejo Aug 9-11. It took a valiant effort to outscore the home team, Mission Viejo. It came down largely to relay participation that made the difference. The Novas swam a total of 53 relays in the meet and consistently outscored both Mission and UCI in those events. There were a total of 69 individual team records set (32 women & 37 men) and 22 Relay records set in the meet. RUTGERS UNIVERSITY, NJ Two Nova Masters participated in the 2003 United States Masters Swimming Long Course Nationals at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Both Tord Benner and Frank Wasko competed in the 40-44 age group. Frank was the surprise National Champion in the 50 Back (winning from lane 8), while Tord showed huge time improvements from the Zone meet in his backstroke events and placed 2nd in the 200 Back, 4th in the 100 and 5th in the 50. Frank's 50 & 100 Back were new team records, while Tord set a new standard in the 200 Back.
