WESTWOOD, CA - Nova Masters swimmer and coach, Paul Carter, 47, had the "Record of the day" when he broke the short course yards 100 Butterfly USMS National Record with a time of 51.67 The previous record was held by William Specht with a 51.91. Leading Paul to the record breaking performance was Bernie Zebruhn who swam a very impressive 50.47 to win the event overall and break his own team record in the event. Bernie also won the 200 Free overall with a new team record time of 1:42.77. Paul also set new team records in the 50 Free (24.22) and 100 Free (52.98) (swimming butterfly in both!). In addition to Carter & Zebruhn, four other Nova Masters participated in the meet including Dionne Caldwell, Hank Greenberg, John Mohler, Cathy Lee Saxton, and Meg Reilly. Caldwell swam the 50, 100, 200, & 500 Freestyle events and set new team records in the 70-74 age group in the 100 (1:34.90), 200 (3:20.50), & 500 (8:54.97). Hank Greenberg, 56 had a breakthrough swim in the 50 Freestyle finally breaking the 30 second barrier he has been chasing for over two year. Hank let out a "Whooo Hooo" scream of delight when he looked up to see the time of 29.60 which also broke the team record of 29.71 previously held by Fred Anderson. Hanks also set a new team record in the 100 Fly with a 1:10.38. Disabled athlete and Paralympic hopeful John Mohler, competiting in just his second meet was also very happy with his 50 Free (40.62) after knocking 4 seconds off his time from the Mission Viejo meet just a few weeks earlier. John also dropped time in his 50 Breast. Rookie of the meet was Cathy Lee Saxton who swam the 500 Free (10:07.40) in her first Masters meet ever, and set the team record in the 45-49 age group. Meg Reilly competing in the 35-39 women's division set new team records in 5 events - 50 Free (30.33), 100 Free (1:02.98), 200 Free (2:12.00), 500 Free (5:44.91), & 50 Breast (36.11). 2005 MISSION VIEJO SC MEET HIGHLIGHTS

MISSION VIEJO, CA - On March 20, 2005 the Nova Masters competed in the Mission Viejo Classic. Fifteen Nova swimmers attended and battled it out with fierce competition coming from UCI, Mission, and San Diego Masters squads. The Nova squad was outstanding and placed high in all events with a substantial amount of wins. Top noteworthy performances came from John Mohler, 50 & 100 Breast (Nova Swimmer of the Meet); Bernie Zeruhn 100 Fly, 100 Back (Best Swim the Meet) & 200 IM; Patrick Dideum (Race of the Meet) 200 Free; and Kathryn Hager (Pinch Swimmer of the Meet) 200 Medley mixed relay. Top performances were also delivered by Tord Benner, Dave Hayward, Hank Greenberg, Debbie & Steve Sutherland, Meg Reilly, Libby Deschenes, Pete Barbrick, Tim Hayward, and Dr. Haig (Competitive Team Co-Physician). Dick Stewart received “Supporter of the Meet” honors for showing up and cheering. Pool deck rumor had it that he just didn’t want to spend the afternoon shopping with his wife, but that could not be confirmed. Club Med Captain Frank Wasko was absent due to a special technique training trip to Finland. He promises to be back in time for the UCLA meet where there will be more 50’s. OCEANSIDE, CA - At least 19 Nova Masters/Multisports Orange County members participated in the Ralph's California Half Ironman Triathlon on March 19th, 2005. The conditions were not ideal as it was wet, rainy, & windy through much of the course. However, conditions were nice and cool for the run. Congratulations to the finishers. PASADENA, CA - Several Nova Masters Swimmers participated in the Cal Tech Pentathlon held March 6, 2005. The meet consisted of a 50 of each stroke plus a 100 IM. The times for all 5 events are added together to establish a winner in each age group. The fastest overall time of the meet went to Nova swimmer, Bernie Zeruhn competing in the 30-34 age group who did all 5 events in a total time of 2:33.59 Frank Wasko won the 40-44 age group in a total time of 2:48.03 Coach Paul Carter won the 45-49 in 2:45.37, with Gerard von Hoffman also of Nova in 2nd at 2:50.17 Brian Pharris palced 2nd in men's 25-29 with 2:50.16. Tord Benner was 5th in 45-49 in 3:01.74. Haig Najarian competed but missed one of the events and did not receive a final total. For the women Meg Reily was the top Nova swimmer.
