SANTA CLARITA, CA - The Nova Masters won their 3rd concecutive SPMA championship April 21-23, 2006 at the Santa Clarita Swim Center. After an aggressive challenge sent by the Santa Clarita Masters Swimming coach, who predicted his event hosting team would crush the Nova Masters, we roared into the SPMA Regional Swimming Championships and dominated the three day event. The 25 member Nova team, despite being behind after the first day of competition, took a 200 point by the end of day two, due to strong relay performances, and it was all but over for the host team and the nearest challengers Ojai Masters and UCLA. Normally the weather out near Magic Mountain is quite warm by late April, but not this year. Competitors were faced with chilly temperatures compounded by a cold wind and clouds blocking the sun. Still, Nova Masters spirits were high as there were several outstanding swims by our members. Nova returned home with quite a few age group top point winners. Nova age group High Point Award winners: Patrick Dideum 20-24 Kathleen Barris 25-29 Don Cholodenko 45-49 Dionne Caldwell 70-75 Outstanding male and female swimmers of the meet went to Kathleen Barris and Patrick Dideum who were the top team point scorers and relay contributors. Special Achievement awards went to Ed Alonso who grabbed his first Regional Championship title by placing first in the 400 IM (thanks to coach Paul missing the event due to illness), and Meg Reilly who traveled from San Diego to help us slam the door on our competition with her 5 individual and 3 relay event swims on Sunday. BELMONT SHORES, CA - The Nova Masters overcame numerous obstacles to win one of the closest team battles in the history of the SPMA SC Meters Championships. The top 3 teams battled throughout the meet spread by less than 50 points most of the way. FINAL TOP 5 TEAM SCORES 1. Novaquatics 1,522.5 2. San Diego 1,495 3. LB Grunions 1,483 4. Mission Viejo 1,345.5 5. Heartland 761 Going into the meet it looked like it would be a tough challenge for the Novas to win the title since the host team Long Beach Grunions had the most entries in the meet. Also, the San Diego Masters, made up of the entire County of San Diego, had many entries and recently won the United States Masters Long Course Nationals. San Diego is well known for having very strong relays. Mission Viejo Nadadores also looked to be contenders for the title. The meet started off well for the Nova's when the team took the lead after day 1 of the 3 day competition, which consisted of the distance events (1500 Free, 400 IM, and 800 Free). The Novas led by 40 points which was hardly a comfortable margin. Mission Viejo held the second spot with Long Beach and San Diego just a few points behind. At the midpoint of the meet on Saturday the LB Grunions had taken over 2nd, but at the end of Saturday the Novas still led, but by only 32 points over San Diego who pushed the Grunions back into 3rd. "I wasn't feeling confident in a victory", Coach Michael Collins said about starting the final day. "We had several disasters happen on Saturday. Our top two 65-69 contenders were out of the meet. Dick Stewart with a stomach flu, and Tom Angel injured his leg jumping into the warm-up pool. One of our top 45-49 swimmers, Fran Wasko, jammed his hand on a touch and was out of the meet half way through Saturday. Kathy Barris dislocated her shoulder on a freak accident and she did a breaststroke turn, but it popped back in and she actually finished the race and even came back to swim two more races that day. However, I knew it would be too sore for her to come back to swim on Sunday. Finally, our top women's relay which won the 400 Medley relay by nearly 20 seconds was disqualified for an early takeoff. It was crazy! We never had so many injuries and accidents at a meet." Somehow the team managed to hold it together though. Collins tune changed after the final race. "We had excellent individual event swims on Sunday. We pretty much re-wrote our team record books with so many new age group records, and also swam strong on the relays, and even went without any disqualifications which was extremely important to taking the title. I was very happy with how the team rallied to swim the last relay to protect the slim lead. We won the meet by only two swims! Every person on the team was a critical factor in the victory." The meet ended somewhat ironically as the Nova 72-99 age group mixed team of Micha Burden, Brandy Bound, Ian Pyott, & Chris Amber won the final relay with a time that will probably rank them in the top 3 in the nation, but the anchor swimmer, Chris Amber, broke his finger on the final touch. He did win the high point in his age group though, and Coach Collins even let him skip the warm-down. For full meet result click HERE. For additional meet photos click HERE. ====imageimage
