Plum wrestler claims title with 100th win
By Paul Kogut, VALLEY NEWS DISPATCH
Sunday, January 15, 2012
On one of the bigger stages of the high school wrestling season, Plum senior 138-pounder John Marotto showed a flair for the dramatic and notched his 100th career win.
Marotto reached the milestone when he pinned Fox Chapel senior Shane Bialowas in 2 minutes and 38 seconds in the finals of the 11th annual Allegheny County Wrestling Championships on Saturday night at Fox Chapel High School.
“It was really exciting,” said Marotto, who was seeded third in the 32-wrestler bracket but won his first Allegheny County title. “All my family and friends were here, cheering me on. It means a lot.”
Marotto entered the two-day, 40-team tournament with 95 career wins. He breezed through the first three rounds by pinning South Fayette’s Brandon Keck in 39 seconds, defeating West Allegheny’s Jordan Douglas, 11-4, and pinning Central Catholic’s Chris Nuss in 1:49.
In the semifinals, Marotto faced No. 2-seed Anthony Marks of Montour and ground out a 3-2 victory.
“I was really motivated this weekend,” said Marotto, who is 15-2 this season and 100-32 in his career. “That match against Montour’s Marks was a really tough match. I was seeded third, but I knew I could do it.”
Bialowas also pieced together an outstanding tournament, despite the loss in the championship bout. He was seeded fourth and recorded a fall, two major decisions and a decision to advance to the finals.
