FOOTLOCK WEST - 2008
Josh and Mike at 08 Footlocker
Josh and Mike after their Footlocker West races! TC Renegades roll on!

On Saturday, December 6th, the 'Best from the West' gather to attack the famed Mt SAC course for the annual Footlocker West Regional Championship.  This was the 30th annual running of this historic race, with the past winners reading like a who's who of future NCAA leaders and US Olympians.  There are grade level races, as well as the formal 'seeded' races for the top boys and girls from the western US.  In the girls seeded race, Californian Jordan Hasay completed an unprecidented four year sweep of event, winning by a ten second margin over D1 State Champion Alex Dunne of San Clemente (who kept her shoes on this time!).  The top 10 finishers from the seeded races form the West Team at next weeks Footlocker Nationals in San Diego.

Two of your Mustangs decided to enter and test the fast waters!  Sophmore Josh Smiley, fresh off his break-through NCS and State Meet race, entered the newly created "Frosh Soph Boys Seeded Championship" race, which drew the top Fr/Soph from the western states.    This race was in addition to all the F/S who raced in the open F/S race earlier in the day.

Right from the gun, Josh was able to settle in the upper 1/4 of the race, running in around 40th place for the first mile.  He passed the clock in a comfortable 5:10, and headed for the Switchback hills.  Coming back into view at about the halfway point of the race, Josh had chewed up a good 15 runners, and was nearing the top 25.  Coming off the final hill, he had moved into 17th place, and while he gave up a couple places on the track coming towards the finish, he was able to pass a runner right at the end to grab 20th place overall in this 'seeded' event!  His time for the tough 5K course was 17: 33 (5:39 pace)

Mike took on the seeded boys race, featuring State Champs and returning Footlocker finalists!  The prerace introductions were pretty impressive, as state winners from Utah, Washington, Arizona, California, Hawaii and Oregon were in attendance.   There were several familiar NCS and NorCal competitors in the list as well.  Mike was able to get a clean start, and stay on his feet despite a number of competitors who fell near him during the first frantic mile.  He cruised through the mile in a conservative 4:58 pace, and then started to attack the pack in front of him in the hills.  Running what he called a tough race, full of ups and downs physically and mentally, Mike pushed through the course and onto the track, where he passed several runners during a mad dash for the line.  When it was over, Mike had taken 66th place, which was the highest placement of any MV runner (in the years that Coach Davis has been going down to Footlocker, which started in 2005).

SRV 3200 Time Trial RESULTS
Chase pack - 3200 time trial 08
From left: Rahul, Kevin, Amis, Zach and Josh battle at the SRV time 3200 trial

Near perfect conditions greated the MVXC Varsity runners today, along with several FS / JV runners, as they raced a fast 3200 meters on the San Ramon Valley HS track.   A long standing area cross country tradition, the 3200 race provides an opportunity for local athletes to lay down a PR 3200 a week before the NCS meet!  And a number of runners were determined to do just that, as all three heats featured motivated runners who pressed the pace the entire race.

Leading the fast heat, Senior Mike Roderick continued his impressive streak of races, by winning in a stellar time of 9:42.  Jr Amis Matulionis was the next Mustang across the line in 10:11, with Soph Josh Smiley 3rd in 10:23.  On the girls side, both Jr. Nicole Aha and Fr. Kyla Aiuto finished in the top 5 today, as Nicole finishes a close third in 11:59, while Kyla was 5th in 12:05.

Byron Kilian ran a strong race to finish 4th in the second heat, in a great time of 10:52.

In the 3rd heat, Jr Natalie Scott battles with the JV boys, finishing a close 3rd in 12:50.

FS hanging out at Ed Sias 2008
PART OF THE FROSH SOPH GANG HANGIN OUT AT ED SIAS!

Mustangs set up camp in the premier location (???) and proceed to wreck havoc on the Ed Sias course today!  118 Stangs toe the line in 9 different races.  And when the dust had settled, the results consistently had MVXC at or near the top!  In fact, 9th place was the lowest team finish today - out of up to 25 teams in some of the races!  WOW!

Team medals went to the F/S Boys and Girls "limited" teams with 4th place finishes.  Medals and Nike bags went to the Varsity Girls team for their 4th place finish, and medals and Nike Backpacks went to the first place Varsity Boys team.   (Top overall MV times are in the Handout below)

Many many photos taken by Coach Davis (posting soon), who recovered from the exciting coaches race to snap just a couple shots today.

The team should be proud of how you supported each other, cheering loudly every time a Mustang harrier cruised by.  And with a concentrated effort - the camp cleanup was great!

A big thank you to all the Moms and Dads who came out to support the team as well.

large crowds gather along the jungle, the eliminator, and the finish area...

And when it was all over (on time of course) the MVXC gang had taken home many of the top honors including:

- If scored as two large races (all boys time combined, then all girls times) - Monte Vista Boys finish 3rd overall, just seconds from 1st place, and MV Lady Stangs take 4th in the large field (second EBAL squad).

California State Meet! Starn, Smiley take on the State's best in Fresno!

California State Meet!  Sat Nov 24th.  The Mustangs are well represented today as Freshman Brooke Starn and Senior Katharine Smiley take on the best in the State on the historic Woodward Park course in Fresno.  Brooke's 18:37 time puts her as #2 all-time for the Mustangs.  She finishes in 37th out of 196 runners - the #9 fastest frosh girl on the day (any division).  Katharine's time of 19:34 puts her in MV's top 10 as well, as she closes out her amazing HS cross country career with another solid performance!  See the full list of who has run at State for the Mustangs here.  State Meet results (Brooke and Katharine ran in the Division 1 race): http://rtspt.com/events/cif/xc2012/

Saturday, November 17
2013 NORTH COAST SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS

- Nov 17th, Hayward HS.  It's on to the State Meet for Fr Brooke Starn and Sr Katharine Smiley as they both grab individual qualifiying spots on the muddy course today.  Despite the terrible conditions (some would say it was 'classic' cross country weather) the girls run solid times to advance to next weeks CIF XC Championships in Fresno.   Brooke runs the fastest MV time ever on this course, grabbing 5th place in a fast 18:16 time.  Katharine avenges last years race by grabbing 8th place and taking the last individual qualifying spot in a quick 19:08 time.  After just missing last year, Katharine refuses to be denied in 2012!

GIRLS RACE RECAP:
The girls team runs all out - determined to grab one of the two team spots for State.  Ranked 3rd coming into the contest, the squad gets out fast and battles with EBAL foes Granada and Amador Valley throughout the race.  During the last mile, the PA announces that the Mustangs are in third, only two points from 2nd.  Pouring it on (in the pouring rain) the girls finish strong - the results too close to call!  When the mud settles, MV is tied for second place with Amador Valley, but awarded 3rd due to the 6th runner tie breaker rule.  As close as it gets!!!  Despite the heartbreaking result, the team takes pride in their effort and earns podium medals at the awards ceremony.  Running for the team today, in order of finish, are:  Brooke Starn (5th), Katharine Smiley (8th), Jr Erin Herting (17th), Sr Amy Ingram (19th), Sr Ellie Harvey (29th), Sr Megan Blair (35th) and Sr Elena Smith (46th).

The 72 points scored today are lower than the MV team that one the NCS back in 2009.  Their team time is the 3rd fastest of all NCS schools today - faster than 16 teams that advance to State!!!  These stats are indicative of the record setting season for this talented group, a season they can be truly proud of.

Junior Jake Auby powers home at NCS.                                 MV Varsity Girls - all smiles before their NCS race!

BOYS RACE RECAP:
The Boys team ran earlier in the day, and although it was not raining hard during their race, you'd never know it by looking at the varsity 'whites" afterward.  The mud and slope was already a given by their 9am start time.  Pulling up two rookies for their first varsity race (Fr John-Austin Ricks and Soph Jackson Wightman), the team was determined to end the season on a positive note.  And that they did, finishing ahead of a number of schools that had previously beaten them to take 13th place in the Section.   Once again, Jr MVP Jake Auby paced the team, finishing in a solid 17:32 time despite the conditions.  Sr James Mason was only three places behind in 17:36!  Rounding out the scoring team today was Sr Patrick Kragen, Jr Andre Starr and Ricks.  Sr Cameron Somers and Fr Wightman were 6th and 7th.  With a 'never say never' attitude, the boys continued to train hard all season and helped lay the foundation for a strong team next season.

SRV 3200 meter Race - Results

The varsity team headed over to SRV's track on this cool but dry morning, to join several local schools in the running of the 3200 meters!  After a season of hard training, fast times are the norm for this now traditional tune-up for NCS next weekend.

Frosh Brooke Starn leading the second 3200 heat.

The girls are paced by Brooke Starn in a very quick 11:13 time.  Katharine Smiley and Erin Herting are 2nd and 3rd for the team today.  Sr James Mason leads the boys team as he runs a very fine 10:39 in his first track 3200 ever!   Jr Jake Auby in close behind followed by Patrick Kragen.

Mt SAC Invitational - Oct 20th:    Varsity team travels to So Cal to participate in the largest two day cross country meet in the nation!  Over 500 teams run on the 65 year old course - same course year after year!   Girls varsity earns an invitation to a "sweepstakes" race against some of the top programs from California and neighboring states.  Not intimidated, the girls run the fastest MV team time ever - averaging 19:16 per person over the hilly course.  Brooke Starn again paces the team with a hot 18:10 time - top MV individual time ever!  Katharine Smiley runs a 30 second PR, followed closely by Erin Herting in her best career race yet!  Amy Ingram and Ellie Harvey round out the scoring for the Mustangs.  Megan Blair and Elena Smith round out the sqaud.  The girls finish 8th out of the 21 teams picked to run this race!

Alternate Megan Nestbit runs a PR time in an earlier race - this being her 3rd straight Mt SAC trip!  Frosh Elana Lim made the trip but did not run due to an injury.

The boys have to wait until the end of the day to race, but that doesn't phase them at all as the team turns in one of their best races of the year.   Jr Jake Auby  paces the team with a 16:45 effort, followed closely by Sr James Mason in 17:05.  Both efforts are easily their top races of the season.  Sr Patrick Kragen steadily moves up during the race to take 3rd for the team, while seniors Michael Bartz and Andre Starr - finally healthy and racing - are 4th and 5th.  Soph Yian Liou and Sr Cameron Somers are the 6th and 7th.

The girls headed to Disneyland after their morning race, while the boys built an epic bonfire at the beach later in the evening.

Ed Sias Invitational - Hidden Valley Park Martinez

An exciting day of racing started with the 7am bus ride from MV to Hidden Valley Park.  The Mustangs were clearly the only team to pull up in 3 buses today!  The day started out with a team "course walk" to learn the ins and outs of this historic course.  After climbing the Eliminator on Tuesday, the hill at the end of this course didn't seem so tough!

Starting at 8:30, the ever popular Coaches Race kicked off the day.  Coach John Behring blasted out with the leaders, eventually finishing near the top ten in a solid 12 minute time.  Coaches Davis and Zach Daniels represented the Mustangs well - defininately beating some middle schoolers today!  After sharing their experiences on the course, it was time for the team to take over the racing.

Team results as follows:
Frosh Boys Unlimited:  11th out of 18
JV Boys Limited: 12th out of 23
Frosh/Soph Boys Limited: 15th out of 29
FS/JV Boys Unlimited: (not scored)
Varsity Boys - Large School Div: 9th out of 15

JV Girls Limited:  8th out of 19
Frosh/Soph Girls Limited: 10th out of 19
FS/JV Girls Unlimited: (not scored)
Varsity Girls - Large School Division:  3rd Place out of 16

Many of the squads were short handed today due to the ACT test, but that didn't stop the Mustangs from racing hard over the 2.0 mile course.

Congrats to the Varsity Girls for their medal winning 3rd place performance today!

GIRLS WRAP UP THE 2009 SEASON AT THE CIF STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

California Interscholastic Federation

Mustangs close out 2009 at the CIF State Championships in Fresno!

Sr Nicole Aha leads the team with a big 18:57 PR for the 5K race, followed closely by Soph Mikaela Hammitt, Jr Jill Anderson, Fr Amy Ingram and Sr Kimmy Abood.  Sr's Kelly Peterson and Anna Hoyt round out the top 7 today.   The entire team is through the first mile under 6 minutes!  Their 5K 19:36 average team time is fastest in Monte Vista school history at State! Girls end up 17th in the State for D1 teams, with a strong 59 second scoring gap.  Story below.

Cross Country is one of a handful of high school sports in the state that has a true State Championship event.  Since 1987, the CIF has held championships for cross country at Woodward Park in Fresno.  In that time, Monte Vista has sent a total of six girls teams to compete: 1990, 1991, 2000, 2002, 2003 and now 2009.  This is in addition to numerous individual qualifiers over the years.

Monte Vista competes in Division 1, based upon our NCS designation.  This division is dominated by the Southern Section schools, and has been for years.  Monte Vista would be a medium size D2 school in the Southern Section.  This helps to explain the struggles that NCS teams have had lining up against these larger programs.

So on November 28th, your Mustangs toed the line against the best in the State in D1, and competed like the NCS Champions that they are!  The team ran a 19:36 average time for a full 5K, which translates to a slightly faster team time than their 3 mile effort at Hayward for NCS.  Led by Nicole Aha's huge PR of 18:57, the girls finished with their trademark tight pack (59 seconds).  Nicole was 57th overall, outkicking SRV's top finisher right at the line!  Next across was Mikaela Hammitt in 19:31, running a solid race throughout.  Jill Anderson and Amy Imgram kept very close to each other during the race, finishing just 1 second apart at the end.  Kimmy Abood again nailed down the 5th spot, breaking 20 min for the 5K herself.  Kelly Peterson and Anna Hoyt were just over 20 min and amoung the fastest 6th and 7th runners in the whole race.

While it was hard to get too excited about finishing 17th in the State, the team soon realized the significance of what had just occured.  Compared to the 5 previous MV teams, the 2009 edition blasted their way to the fastest team time in school history.  The previous top team time was set back in 2000 with a 20:17 mark.  That team featured the current 1600 & 3200 meter record holder Susan Chan, along with Brittany Rezowalli, both who went on to run well at the NCAA D1 level.  The 19:36 team time for this years squad is nearly a minute faster than most of the previous teams!   For a historical review, click on the Team Stats link: http://www.eteamz.com/mvxc/news/index.cfm?cat=278753

CONGRATS to the Girls Varsity squad for a season to remember!  With the middle of the line-up all returning next year, plus the strong F/S and JV teams from this season, the Mustangs look to make return visits to Fresno a regular event!

GIRLS CAPTURE NORTH COAST SECTION TITLE - ADVANCE TO STATE!
2009 Soph Mikaela Hammit at NCS
Soph Mikaela Hammitt finishes in 8th place to lead the Lady Stangs at NCS

Girls race wrap up:
For Senior Nicole Aha, the fourth time was the charm!  Having run in four consecutive North Coast Section Championships, she has witnessed the Mustangs move up from 9th in 2006, to 4th in 2007, to 3rd in 2008.  Joined by fellow Seniors Kimmy Abood - in her 3rd consecutive NCS final - Kelly Peterson (2nd NCS) and Anna Hoyt (2nd NCS), the squad finally had the 'horsepower' to make it all the way to the top - FIRST PLACE and a trip to the State Meet in Fresno!

New NCS teammates made a huge impact, as Sophomore Mikaela Hammitt, finally recovered from bronchitis, stormed out with the leaders and raced aggresively the whole way, grabbing 8th overall and first for the team.  Mikaela ran an impressive 18:47 time today!  Nicole was a close 2nd in 12th place, followed by Frosh Superstar Amy Ingram who was literally right behind her in 13th.  That put 3 Stangs in before anyone else had 3, and most teams did not have 2 in yet.  Both Nicole and Amy were under the 19 minute barrier.  Jr Jill Anderson, healthy at last herself, raced to a huge PR and ran down several runners in the home stretch to take 4th for the team and 19th overall.  Kimmy was the key 5th runner today, finishing the scoring in 23rd place, passing key opposition runners as well.  The Mustangs put 5 runners before two time defending champions Castro Valley (#1 ranked) had 3 in, ending all doubt as to the outcome.   Kelly and Anna were close behind, in 32nd and 33rd place.  As 6th and 7th runners, they finished before CV and SRV had their 5th runners in, bumping them back in the scoring!

Frosh/Soph league champion Meghan Yap was the NCS alternate, ready to go if needed.

After a frustrating EBAL Finals race, the girls team was determined to take the race to the other top teams.  "It's not their turn, it's our turn" became the battle cry during the two weeks between league and NCS.

Now the team heads to the CIF State Meet, as the Section Champion.  What started a full year ago, with a near-miss 3rd place finish at NCS in 2008, ended with a bang today on the storied Hayward course.

GREAT JOB MUSTANGS!!!!

BOYS VARSITY BATTLES TO A STRONG 5TH PLACE AT NCS!
2009 Byron Kilian at NCS
SOPH BYRON KILIAN'S STRONG 16:13 EFFORT PACES THE MUSTANGS AT NCS!

Boys race wrap up:
There are many great underdog stories in sports.  History has shown us numerous "David versus Goliath" contests.  For the 2009 Mustang Boys Varsity team, the North Coast Section Championships were a definative example of just such a situation.  Having finished 4th in the EBAL Championship meet, the team faced not only undefeated and State ranked San Ramon Valley, but a De La Salle team that has been right on SRV's heels all season.  Throw into the mix the previously #1 ranked Castro Valley team, who were coming off a "sweep" in their league meet, the battle facing the Mustangs today was daunting indeed.  Add in 2 time State Meet qualifing Amador Valley, and the mix was complete.

During the weeks leading up the NCS, the boys were determined to no be an afterthought in the battle.  Encouraged by their EBAL and 3200 race performances, the Stangs felt they had nothing to lose by going out strong and racing the top teams.  "Put yourself in the fight at the 2 mile point, and see what we can make happen" was the basic battleplan.  Not easy when your competition is that strong.

Right from the gun, the guys went "all in" and stayed up with the lead pack.  Jr Josh Smiley and Sr Amis Matulionis were comfortablly in the top 10, while Soph Byron Kilian and Jr Zach Chambers were close behind.  Sr Captain Jake Erlick ran a sprited race, starting out faster than usual.  Close to Jake were Jr Kevin Ho and Sr Elliott Killick.  Soph Stephen Balogh was the alternate, trained and ready to jump in if needed.  The stage was set - the battle was on.

As the race played out, the Mustangs found themselves shorthanded yet again - a difficult and disappointing theme to their season.  Josh aggrevated his hip coming down the first hill, and was not able to stay with the lead pack.  Having qualified for State as a Sophomore, he gamely held on during the last mile.  Amis was plauged by stomach issues that stopped him several times before, finally forcing him out of the race completely in the last mile.  Unphased, the remaining Stangs fought on.  Byron moved steadily up, to finish 1st for the team in a PR time of 16:13.  He cracked into the top 20 today, signaling his presence to the NCS compeition.  Zach closed in a blazing finish, coming in at 22nd place in 16:19.  Josh held on for 3rd runner status in 27th, while Jake moved into the 4th spot in 40th place.  Jr Kevin Ho hammered home - chasing down numerous runners and closed out the scoring for MV in 42nd place.  Elliott was close behind in 44th.

When the dust settled, the team had secured 5th place overall, despite losing a runner and having one injured.  In a classic MV Boys Team fashion, only 38 seconds separated the 1st and the 5th runner.  Hanging on to 5th place is testimony to how hard the team trained as a pack.  It also signals their intent to build upon that finish for next season, with 4 of the top 5 runners returning!

CONGRATS MUSTANGS!!!!

MUSTANGS TRAVEL TO THE HISTORIC MT SAC INVITE!

The Mustang Varsity teams took on teams from Southern Cal, as well as neighboring states at the 62 annual Mt SAC Invitational this past weekend.  Over 16,000 high school athletes run the famed course over a two day period.

The Varsity Boys were the second race of the day on Saturday, running at 7:37 in the morning!  It was dark when the team arrived to set up camp.  However, by race time the sun was starting to appear, and conditions for racing were near perfect.  Led by Jr Josh Smiley's 8th place overall finish, the Mustangs flirted with the top two teams for most of the race, before falling just a little short at the end.  Their 6th place team finish featured a solid pack time of 1:21 (1-5 gap).  Byron Kilian, Jake Erlick, Trevor Furhiman, Elliot Killick, Amis Matulionis and Stephen Balogh rounded out the varsity boys team today.

The Varsity Girls didn't get to sleep in, as their race went off promptly at 8:11 am.  Right from the start, the team was in a fierce battle with squads from Los Alamitos and Highland (Southern Section teams).  Sr Nicole Aha was the top finisher for the Mustangs in 9th place, followed by a stong pack that had all 7 runners in by 32nd place - and a strong 51 second 1-5 gap.  This vaulted the team to a close 2nd place in the race.  They ended up the 4th fastest squad from NorCal on the day! The rest of the Mustangs today: Kimmy Abood, Kelly Peterson, Anna Hoyt, Lauren Gratsch, Meghan Yap and Natalie Scott.  http://images.dyestat.com/dyestatcal/images/2009/October/23%20Mt%20SAC/56.pdf

41 area teams sent athletes to the annual DLS/CHS Nike Invite on Saturday, to try their luck on the famed Newhall Park 2 and 3 mile courses.  With only the one big hill (you call that a hill???), the course provides for fast times and many season PRs.  After a quick walk-through in the early hours, the team settled in to our dual-tent base camp and got down to racing business.

No MV squad finished less than 7th today.  Many Stangs collected the top 20 or top 25 individual medals, while some were able to grab the coveted Nike hats.  Mustang team summaries:

Frosh Soph Girls:  3rd place (team medals!) out of 13 scoring teams
Junior Varsity Girls: 5th out of 12 scoring teams
Frosh Soph Boys (limited): 6th out of 19 scoring teams
Frosh Soph Boys (unlimited): 2nd out of 12 scoring teams
Junior Varsity Boys (limited): 4th out of 18 (tied for 3rd, lost on 6th man rule)
Junior Varsity Boys (unlimited): 3rd out of 9 scoring teams
Varsity Boys - 7th place out of 29 scoring teams
Varsity Girls - 2nd place out of 21 scoring teams (team medals and Nike gear!)

The varsity girls finished with the top score of any other North Coast Section team, losing to 4 time defending CCS Section D1 Champs Carlmont by only 9 pts!  Congrats!

Results for each race can be found in the handout below.

Taking advantage of the nearby Nike truck, the team collected a lot of bling today!  Once again, Izze was there to provide the cold post race refreshments!

Next up - Stanford Invite for the Varsity.  All team members are welcome to come and watch!

The early morning thunderstorms did not scare away the Mustangs today, as the team took to the famed Ed Sias two mile course and ran outstanding races!  MANY 'Stangs gathered top finishing medals and/or the purple socks, while even more collected team medals.  Right from the start you could tell it was going to be a great day as former Mustang Dustin Harris took 2nd in the Open/Coaches race, with Coach Scott Camp finishing in a strong 8th place!  Coach Davis and Coach Sharon also ran the course today - leaving JV Coach Austin to handle all the bibs and camp set-up.  Don't forget, he's only in it for YOU!

The entire team organized quickly, walking the course in the early morning hours to learn its' secrets and to plot strategy.

High team results were the order of the day, as MV's name was constantly called during the post meet awards ceremony.  Meet summary, in order:

Frosh Boys - 2nd Place out of 19 teams!
Junior Varsity Boys, Limited - 3rd out of 27!

Meet summary from DyeStatCal.com (Courtesy of Northgate's Coach Peter Brewer):

A  big gathering at Oakhill Park in Danville had some good "by-grade" action at the Monte Vista Invitational
in the North Coast Section Tuesday, September 8th.  Colleen Lillig (California, San Ramon), ranked
among the State's top dozen athletes (look for those individual ratings in the next week), blazed
12:31.62 Course Record to win the Girl's senior race and have the day's quickest time by over 30 seconds,
with teammate Elaine McVay racing 13:05.23 in taking the Girls's Junior race.  Alex Summers of
Granada (Livermore) had the Boys' quickest time with his 10:46.20 senior race win, with one other athlete
under 11:00 this day, Will Melton (Northgate) second in that twelfth grade race at 10:58.81.

When combining the groups the strong Castro Valley and Monte Vista Girls, predicted to battle for the NCS
Division I title looked very strong.  Castro Valley had three Girls under 14:00 here, led by Elise Wummer's
13:21.51, with Monte Vista two under that barrier, with MV's fifth runner this day 14:21.60 and CV's  14:31.87.
On the Boys's side, it was powerhouses San Ramon Valley, Monte Vista, and Division I favorite Castro Valley
who looked sharp.  SRV had five under 12:00 this day, with Monte Vista matching that number, and CV
four under 12:00 before falling off a bit.

It is still early in the year with a number of good athletes who maybe did not run this day expected out on the
course in the next few weeks as the season starts to take shape.

Sat Oct 26th - Monte Vista travels to the 66th annual Mt SAC Invite!
The varsity teams, plus alternates, traveled to the LA area on Friday the 25th in order to compete in the largest high school cross country meet in the country!  Teams from all over the state, and out of state, came to run this historic course.  Over 18,000 runners competed over the two day event!   The Mustang girls team was placed in a special "sweepstakes" race, facing some of the toughest teams around.  Led once again by Soph Brooke Starn, the lady Stangs turned in an impressive race, finishing 7th in the tough field.  Brooke was 13th overall.  Meredith Corda was second for the team, followed by Madi Jeha, Erin Herting, Emily Gines, Cat Kiser and Caroline Carey.

Earlier in the day, Junior alternates Alexis Baille and Salvina Rondoni finshed in the top 35 in a crowded JV race.

The varsity boys ran a senior heavy lineup, yet it was Soph Tim Chrisman who crossed the line first for the team today.  Rebounding from a tough Mt Sac trip the year before, the team finished a very respectible 12th out of 21 teams in their Div 1 race.  True to form, and regardless of the line-up, the top 5 scorers were once again packed under a minute of each other.  Rounding out the varsity team today:  Jake Auby, Brian Maguire, Andre Starr, Riley Cole and Austin Lohr.

In the last race of the day for the Mustangs, frosh standouts Sebastian Francesconi and Daniel Maneloveg run with the leaders the whole race, looking relaxed and unfazed by the hilly course.  In the end, they would finish 2nd and 4th respectively, out of over 170 freshmen runners, to earn Mt Sac medals!  A great wrap up to the day.

A trip to Disneyland for the girls, and to the beach for the boys (after a quick go-cart race challenge with Coach John), ended the long day.   - Who will make this trip next year?   Start making plans now!

Oct 16th - EBAL Center Meet at Newhall Park:   Monte Vista takes on East Bay Athletic League rivals today, with all races at the full three mile distance.  Running on the Nike Invitational course, the Mustangs turned in one of the strongest team finishes of the day!   Arriving in a sea of black "MVXC" t-shirts, the team showed great unity and spirit, helping each other reach for that PR or catching that next runner.  Many runners finished in the top ten of their races, with six runners taking either 1st or 2nd place.  The girls team swept the individual titles, winning the FS, JV and Varsity races - an amazing feat.

When it was all over, the team had recorded these impressive results:

Frosh Soph Girls:  1st Place.  Elana Lim 1st, Morgan Dowling 2nd.  Seven in the top fourteen!
Frosh Soph Boys:  3rd Place.  Peter Davis 2nd,  Three in the top ten!
JV Girls:  2nd Place:   Jenelle Doolittle 1st, Sophia Tomei 2nd, three in the top fifteen.
JV Boys:  2nd Place:   Yain Liou 4th, Justin Kim 6th,  all five in the top fifteen!
Varsity Girls:  2nd Place:   4 pts from first.  Brooke Starn 1st Place.  4th fastest time ever at Newhall Park!   5 in the top 18.
Varsity Boys:  6th Place:  Tristan Miller fastest frosh on the day.  18 second gap between #1 and #6 runner!

Results can be found on the XC Stats link as well as on Cross Country Express.  More to follow...

Oct 12th - Castro Valley / Trojan Invite:   Frosh/Soph and Junior Varsity teams shine at the Castro Valley Invite!  Once the early morning fog lifted, the Mustangs ran wild, with strong results in all four races.   The JV Girls led the way by taking FIRST PLACE against some tough local competition, putting four runners in the top 11 with their 5th runner close behind in 33rd.  In order:  Hannah Kim, Emma Knutson, Sophia Tomei, Jenelle Doolittle & Carissa Grove form the scoring team today.   In the earlier race, the Frosh Soph Girls took 2nd place out of 16 complete teams!  Morgan Dowling and Kacy Hussey win medals while pacing the squad.

On the boys side, the Frosh Soph boys grabbed 4th place with an impressive pack of runners.   Garrett Auby and Nick Vomund earn medals themselves, with top 25 finishes.  The tight pack - only 29 seconds between runner #1 and #5 - insures the strong results.  The JV Boys are last up - and close out the day with a solid 7th place out of the 25 schools that toed the line!  Jr Jackson Wightman leds the way.

2013 OVERNIGHT RELAY - TEAM FINISHES JUST SHY OF RECORD.
The red, white and blue super hero's came ready to play, AND ready to run some serious miles!   Senior Phil DeLuca kicked things off with the opening mile, then quickly assumed the drums and lead vocals for the band Rundown Radio who rocked the early night with original tunes and classic rock covers (thank you MV Administration!!).   Frisbees, TV's, board games, soccer, football quickly assumed the dominate role as the team enjoyed the relatively warm evening.   The food selection as out of this world, as each class contributed big time to the cause.  Money for the Save Mt Diablo Organization poured in (nearly $600 collected as of last night).

However, it was the action on the track that started to get the attention of the parent volunteers, the coaches, and the runners themselves.  Hammering mile after mile, the team was projecting to blow past the 2012 team result, looking to be over 112 miles as of mid evening.  As each team member took their turn, it was obvious that the hard work was paying off.  PR after PR was set, especially by the underclassmen.

By 5am, and several stadium lighting shut downs, it was clear the team was doing something special.   Beating last years team was no longer the goal - could the team possibly reach the 2009 record???   With a mixture of varsity and non varsity, boys and girls, the last runners pushed themselves to lower the pace and increase the miles.  When Jr Jackson Wightman took the baton from Sr Jake Auby, the team had completed 114 miles - closing in on the record!   As the team screamed encouragement, Jackson pounded the final meters until the clock hit 0:00.00.   When the numbers were reviewed, the 2013 team was 2nd All Time - hitting 114.4 miles, just over one mile away from securing the best team result ever!   Wow.  Results HERE.

Heeding the coaches advise, there were very few skittles / gold fish / cheese-its on the field, and the team cleaned up quickly.  An amazing job team!!!

Special thanks to all who donated to the SMD cause, brought food or drinks, and of course, those parents who helped us time throughout the evening!  Rest up team!

The Frosh/Soph and Junior Varsity teams traveled to the Mariner Invitational today to try their hand on the historic 2.1 mile course.  It was still dark as the team boarded the buses at 6:30, but soon the team was settled in the park and checking out the course.  Yes...that's a big hill!  Fortunately, the training the team has done in the Mt Diablo foothills more than prepared them to handle it.

The day started out in fine fashion, as the surging Frosh Soph Girls team got out fast and had a solid pack up front, enabling the squad to take a close 2nd place in the Large School F/S division!  The top seven scorers for the team were:  Erin Herting, Caroline Carey, Rachel Dorado, Emma Knutson, Katie Finnerty, ME Hildebrand and Emily Warburton.  Congrats girls!

The JV Girls team was largely absent, as the PSAT test took most of the squad away.  That didn't prevent Mackenzie Baily, Krista Sawchuk and Julia Kot from taking on the course and setting PR pace times!  While they didn't have enough for a scoring team, that didn't put a dent in the girls' great attitude as they worked through the race.

After a break for the varsity races, the boys to the course focused on trying to nab some medals themselves!   The Frosh Soph boys battled hard throughout the race, with several Mustangs running in the top 20 for most of the race.  In the end, the team took 7th place overall, paced by Kyle Lohmann, Tristen Stewart, Ben Spencer, Daniel Crisman, Petar Zaninovich, Justin Kim and Scott French.

Last up - the JV Boys laid it all out trying for a top 4 team finish.  Early on, it looked close for the team as the group got out to a fast start.  While the temps had warmed since the early morning races, it didn't seem to slow the guys as they pushed hard to the finish.  In a nail-biter finish, the team took 5th place, but the first two Stangs both earned individual medals.  The top seven, in order:  Sean Yap, Zack Erlick, Jason Vawter, Cameron Somers, Duke Peterson, Jack Gore and Drew Delucchi.

GO MUSTANGS!

EBAL Center Meet - RESULTS

Oct 12th: EBAL Center Meet at Robertson Park, Livermore -  Strong showing by the team today as no squad has a losing record.  Girls team leads the way as the Frosh Soph Girls (1st place in the unofficial scoring) and JV Girls (2nd place) set the tone.  Varsity Girls take a close 3rd, finish at 5-2 on the day and are led by Jr Katharine Smiley's 7th place effort!   Ering Herting (2nd place FS Girls race) and Elyce Bayat (2nd place JV girls race) pace those teams.

Frosh Soph and JV boys finish 4th today with 4-3 marks (unofficial as only the varsity is scored today).  Soph Tristen Stewart is first for MV in the FS race, while Jr Chris Menezes paces the JV squad.   Varsity Boys close the gap to the top teams - finish 4-3 today while putting 3 runners in the top 15 - led by Sr Trevor Fuhriman's individual victory.  Drew Feldman is in 6th.  They are only 1 pt out of 3rd!

Results posted - see Handout under the 2011 Results tab.

Click on the handout below for results of each race.  Only the Varsity teams score counts for the EBAL title, as the FS and JV titles are decided solely on the outcome of the EBAL Championship meet (Nov 5th).  However, unofficial scores are kept and our Mustangs represented themselves in fine fashion today!
