Details from the Mandatory Parent Meeting

Posted by Mike Davis at Aug 28, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

On Aug. 27, the parent meeting was held in the MV Theater. If you did not attend, please email team parent, Courtney Corda.

Here is a brief recap:

Coach Davis introduced the coaching staff and welcomed new and returning team members. The coaches then discussed team goals, coaching styles, key rules and policies, including the attendance policy. Coach Davis explained why it is extremely important for every runner to REGISTER ON XCSTATS.com, where runner performance statistics are tracked. XCStats accounts are FREE and XCStats is the primary method for coach-to-parent and coach-to-runner email communication. The coaches did an overview of the team schedule and how meets work,  explained nutrition for runners, and discussed the team uniforms and proper footwear. The budget was discussed at length; in particular, the team is almost 100% parent supported since all costs including buses, race fees, and coaches' stipends are paid for with parent donations. The school district only covers the head coach's stipend. Parents are asked to donate $260 per athlete and, in addition, to purchase a cross country uniform if your runner does not already own one. Doug Nesbit, our liaison to the MV Athletic Boosters Club gave a brief presentation about the role of the Boosters club which funds all sports OTHER THAN football and raises money to buy expensive equipment needed for various sports such as specialized timing systems. The coaches asked for parent volunteers for running various meets. Volunteer sign ups are handled on SignUpGenius.com and the links for each event can be found on this website on the VOLUNTEERING page.

Mt. Diablo Challenge Run Sign Up Instructions and Details

Posted by Mike Davis at Aug 18, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
[Note: date change to 9/6/14] On Saturday, Sept. 6, from 8:00 am to approximately 11:30, we will hold the annual Mt. Diablo Challenge. This is not a race. It is a challenging run for fun for our team. We will gather at the Macedo Ranch staging area at the end of Green Valley Rd. (Note: if you plan to park there, the fee is $6 cash). Runners MUST SIGN UP ONLINE in advance to participate. All Summer Running Club participants are invited as well as any other team members who have been running regularly during the summer. There will be two pace groups and two support vehicles with food and water during the climb up. We are seeking parent volunteers to drive runners down the mountain after the run as well. Please sign up if you can help. There is a $10 vehicle entry fee to enter Mt. Diablo State Park.  Thanks!

Thirty alumni show up today to meet old teammates, share stories, and once again take on the MV course - including a visit to their old friend The Eliminator hill.  Alumni actually outnumbered the current team, but the current squad was determined to send a message as well.

Former head coach Mike Huntsman handled the timing duties, while coaches Bhavik and Mandee helped get everyone assembled at the starting line and ready to go at 9:30.  Once the "gun" went off, the group sprinted through the grass field and the fun began!   Up front, Coach Bhavik (also an alumni) battled with current SF State teammates Feldman and Garaventa, with the alumni boys massing in the top ten.   In the girls race, Jr Brooke Starn grabbed an early and commanding lead, while the next few positioned alternated between alumni and current team girls.

Since there was a large Mustang Soccer tournament going on as well, the runners were greeted by 'fans in the stands' - a first for the alumni race!

Many veterans and new runners were simply trying to get through the tough two mile course, with jokes and laughter early on turning to grunts and groans in the hills.    But the two mile course goes by quickly, and soon everyone was streaking down the hill and heading towards the finish.  Well, everyone except alumni Justin Yarkin (03) who ran the "old course" in the last 1/2 mile and ended up in the swing sets!  He was all smiles at the finish though.

In the end, the alumni boys took 4 of the first five positions, with sophomore Daniel Maneloveg running a stellar time to break up their scoring.   The Alumni Boys ran to a 18-41 victory today.   In the girls race, the current team runners took 1st and 3rd (Starn / Corda) with the alumni taking 2nd and 4th (Aha and Smiley).   However, new freshmen Audrey Coney, Maddie Coney alone with "rookie" Jr Heidi Fuhriman sealed the deal for the current team girls.

Many fun stories were shared with promises to return next season.   Hope you can join us!
