The Southern Indiana Spikes based in Santa Claus Indiana won the 9 and under Baseball Players Association Northern Zone World series in Owensboro, KY. on July 26th through July 30th. In order to compete in the World Series teams must have either won or placed second in a B.P.A. sanctioned tournament. They started their games on Thursday with a win over the Kentucky Bobcats and the Western Kentucky Bulldogs. Then on Friday they beat the Evansville Triplets. Saturday's game was not as good for the Spikes. They were defeated by the Evansville Spikes which forced them to the losers bracket and a loss away from elimination. The Spikes were then forced to win three straight games then beat the Evansville Triplets once again. This put the Southern Indiana Spikes VS. the Evansville Spikes in the Championship game on Sunday. The first game was a nail bitter with the Southern Indiana Spikes winning 4-2. This forced the winner take all final game. Evansville took the lead 1 -0 in the first and added another in the second. The Spikes then took the lead 3-2 in the third . Evansville scored two more runs to take the lead 4-3 in the top of the 5th inning. This put the Southern Indiana Spikes with their backs against the wall down to their last three outs. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Trevor Lehr then hit a lead off single to start the inning, Tyler Ward then followed up with another single to put runners on first and second. Gavin Schaefer hit an RBI single to center field to pull the Spikes within one run. With runners on first and second Mason Becher sacrifice bunted the runners to second and third with one out. Caleb Sabelhaus then steps to the plate with a game winning double for a final score of 6-5. The Spike finish their season with a record of 33-10. The Southern Indiana Spikes competed in 10 Travel tournaments and placed either first or second in eight of the ten tournaments.image
The 9U Southern Indiana Spikes won the 2nd Annual BPA Summer Slam baseball Tournament at Jack C. Fisher Park in Owensboro, Ky June 9 thru 11th. They were undefeated in the tournament. So far this year the 9U Spikes have competed in six tournaments and have either won or placed second in five of them. This year they have traveled to Cincinnati Ohio, Murray and Owensboro Kentucky.image
The 9-U Spikes played a great tournament at Jack C. Fisher Park in Owensboro Kentucky over the Memorial Day weekend. They finished with a record of 4 - 2, and finished runner -up to the Evansville Spikes. Friday was a very late night, with a scheduled start time of 9:30 PM. The Spikes defeated the Shakamak Larkers by a score of 12 - 1 and walked off of the field at 11:45 PM. With that victory the next game was Saturday at 4:00 PM against the Evansville Spikes. Coming up just a little short in that game we were defeated by a score of 9 - 3. This placed the 9-U's in the losers bracket with a long way to battle back to the Championship game. The Spikes then went on a hitting tirade that lasted the for the next three games. The first stop was a 8:00 AM game with the Christian County Bat Cats beating them 14 - 4. Then defeating the Bear Cat Nationals 20 - 6 and the Miken Elite 21 - 10. This placed the 9 - U,s in a very familiar spot, Championship game. With the heat of the day and playing three straight games the Spikes ran out of gas and were defeated 8 - 3 by the Evansville Spikes. The 9 - U's pitched 7 different pitchers and scored a total of 73 runs for the tournament. A very impressive weekend by the 9U Southern Indiana Spikes.imageimage
On May 13th and 14th the 9U Spikes participated in the 4th Annual Mid -May Classic NIT USSSA baseball tourney in Cincinnati, Ohio. On Saturday, the Spikes defeated the Grove City Vipers by a score of 15-0. Later that same day they competed against the Hall Hornets from FT. Wright KY. The team played a very good, well rounded game and defeating them by a score of 10-0. On Sunday, the weather was not as favorable and in a cold rain, the 9U’s where defeated by the Liking County Magic in a 9 inning marathon by a score of 5-4. The format of this tournament was a pure round robin format so this record gave the Spikes 9U team their second runner up finish in four tournaments. imageimage
