TWENTY ONE ROOKIES ADDED

Posted by Lou Palmer at Sep 21, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Twenty one new players were added to the rosters of eight teams making draft selections at yesterday's Open Tryouts at Seminole Palms Park in Royal Palm Beach. The Royals, moving into the 18AAA league for the first time, have added a big bat in 23-year old Tony Flores, a slugging third baseman-first baseman from Jupiter. Flores was the outstanding hitter at the tryouts, and has played at High Point University and Palm Beach Atlantic, as well as with a travel team in his home town of Jupiter. The Royals added middle infielder Andrew Rubin, 20, of Lake Worth, with their second round pick. Rubin played at Santaluces and Park Vista High Schools and American Legion ball with Post 164. Rubin also played at the beginning of the spring season with the Warriors.

Three other 18AAA teams made one selection apiece in the first round. The Warriors, moving up after winning the 18AA league championship, chose 18-year old Alex Reynolds, who can play center field and first base and can pitch. He played high school baseball in the Netherlands and is currently enrolled at Florida Atlantic University. Another team that is moving up is the Rangers, who played as the Mets last season, and they drafted 23-year old middle infielder Steve Sharon of Boca Raton. Sharon played high school ball at Pope John Paul High School. The Leones' first pick, 24 year old Mike Welch of Plantation, was a Division III All American at York, PA University and played in a strong semipro league in Delaware before moving to Florida. Welch is an outfielder and first baseman.

Quality and depth marked the 18AA selections: The Brewers tabbed 19-year old Brian Knapp of Boca Raton. He is a catcher who can also play third base, first base and second. Knapp played high school ball at West Boca and American Heritage, American Legion ball in Kansas and played for one year at Division II Newman University. They also drafted 31-year old first baseman/pitcher Tony Amatucci, who played with Palm Beach League's Atlantic Sails. The other Brewers' picks were 45-year old pitcher/third baseman Jack Williams, who played college ball at Western Michigan University and 26-year old outfielder/infielder Jason Ramos of Royal Palm Beach. Ramos played at John I. Leonard High School.

The Super Sox took three players. Ryan Pender, a 25-year old infielder, played at Olympic Heights High School in Delray Beach. Miguel Espinol, 23, played four years of high school ball in Queens, NY, two years of Adult League ball in New York and a couple of games with Los Potros in the Palm Beach League. The Sox also took 23-year old first baseman/pitcher Reggie Cruz, who has Palm Beach League experience with the Mariners and Royals.

After veteran catcher Bob Chamberlain moved to St. Augustine, the Marlins had a need for a catcher and they tried to address that by selecting 19-year old Jeremy Stewart, who played high school ball in Maryland before moving to South Florida. They also picked up 31-year old veteran Norberto Labrador, who played college ball at Northwood, as well as in Adult Leagues in Broward County. The Marlins got a supplemental pick in outfielder/infielder Andy Caballero, who played with the Palm Beach League's Atlantic Sails for three years.

The expansion Pirates rounded things out by selecting six players in the draft. Twenty-seven year old catcher Peter DiGiovanni has played high school ball and Adult League ball in White Plains, New York. The Bucs also chose versatile Lucas Scuteri, 25, who has Palm Beach League experience with the Giants, a former Pirates team, and last season with the Super Sox. The Bucs also drafted 32-year old outfielder James Francis, who played with the Palm Beach League Brewers last season, 20-year old pitcher/outfielder Frank Mieses, 37-year old pitcher/outfielder Ramon Jimenez and 32-year old infielder Rafael Soto.

BEACH BUMS' JORDAN PLAYS BIG

Posted by Lou Palmer at Sep 4, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

MICHAEL JORDAN NAMESAKE CARVING REPUTATION IN NABA

(West Palm Beach, FL)--You can hardly tell Michael Jordan, arguably the best basketball player in history, from Michael Jordan, the NABA Palm Beach League player. That is, not until you look beyond the name and the obvious difference in size. Michael Jordan, the NABA baseball player, is just 19 and get this now---he’s only 5’4”, 14 inches shorter than THE Michael Jordan, who led the Chicago Bulls to all of those NBA championships.

THE Michael Jordan also tried his hand at baseball, remember? While “Air Jordan” couldn’t quite hack it on the baseball field, any one who knows him also knows that if he had played the game as a kid, with his natural athletic ability, he might have become a great baseball player too.

Our Michael Jordan already has one advantage over the pro basketball great. He‘s played baseball for most of his 19 years, something the “other“ Jordan never did. Our Jordan is from Miami, Florida, and is a member of the South Florida Beach Bums, who have just completed their first season in the NABA Palm Beach, Florida league.

Jordan won’t be another Spud Webb on the basketball court, but his baseball skills have already turned some heads and earned much respect from teammates and opponents in a very fast NABA league. Many of the players in the Palm Beach League 18AAA league have pro, including major league and college experience, and it takes a lot to earn their plaudits. They’ve given Jordan very high marks for his all around performance on the baseball diamond, where he’s a terrific player despite his size.

Jordan also turned some heads on a national level at the recent RBI (Revising Baseball in the Inner Cities) World Series in Compton, California. Jordan led his Miami Seniors team in hitting with a .636 batting average, including a 3-for-3 performance in his Miami team’s 5-2 win over previously undefeated Houston. To go with his hitting skills, Jordan flashed plenty of leather as a shortstop, and amazed everyone with his range and his arm.

Alex Morin, the director of RBI in Miami, describes Jordan as the “ideal” RBI player. He is an inner-city kid whose family does not have much money, and he attended a high school with only one coach and no field on which to practice. Jordan has already turned both his RBI and NABA experiences into a college scholarship at St. Thomas University in the Miami area, where he red shirted for the baseball team last year and also ran track.

Morin describes Jordan as a “five-tool player”. Not only does he do it all as a position player, but he’s taken his turns on the mound. While pitching was not his strongest asset in the RBI World Series, he has shown some promise as a pitcher in the Palm Beach NABA league.

THE Michael Jordan always had to play taller than his size in the National Basketball Association. Six foot six inches in the NBA is regarded as pretty small. At 5’4”, the NABA’s Michael Jordan has to play even taller, but anybody who’s seen him play knows he is capable of it. Baseball might be the only major sport where size, or the lack of it, just doesn’t matter. Players like Phil Rizzuto, Freddy Patek, and Albie Pearson have proved that you don’t have to BE BIG to PLAY BIG. Michael Jordan is doing that as well, albeit on a “smaller” scale.

The Warriors won their first NABA Palm Beach championship, downing the Indians 9-6 in the morning game at Santaluces on Sunday, but for the first time in the league's 17 year history there will be no upper division champion.

In the 18AAA game which followed the Warriors' win, the Cardinals and Chamos were playing the 10th inning with the score tied at 6-6. The Cardinals disputed a safe call at second base on an attempted sacrifice and when the runner continued on to third base, even though time had been called, a fight broke out at third base and a bench clearing brawl erupted with three players ejected. Law enforcement officials who were called to the scene suggested that the game be terminated and the league agreed to call it a "no contest" with neither team earning the right to be called 18AAA champions.

In the 18AA game, the Warriors rode the pitching of Luis Ramos to a seesaw victory over the Tribe, who were making their first appearance in a title game. Ramos scattered eight hits, struck out five, issued only one walk and hit two batters in going the distance to claim championship game Most Valuable Player honors. At one point, Ramos retired 14 batters in a row until he wilted a bit in the 6th inning, allowing two runs on a two RBI single by Greg Walling for a 4-3 Indians lead, but his teammates responded with three of their own in the bottom half of the frame.

The Warriors had trailed 2-1 and 4-3 until they scored the three runs in the sixth for a lead they would never relinquish. Eddie Lopez and Kevin Martinez started the two out rally with singles. Manager David Lopez walked to load the bases. Moses Pichardo singled sharply to left, scoring Eddie Lopez to tie the game at 4-4, and the bases remained loaded. Martinez scored the go ahead run on a fielder's choice grounder by Josue Molina as the Indians tried for a play at the plate and all hands were safe. Pat Nolan then walked, scoring David Lopez to make it 6-4. The Warriors added one in the seventh on an RBI hit by Alex Vazquez and two more in the 8th on Molina's two run home run.

The Indians posted their final two runs off a tiring Ramos in the 9th inning on a leadoff walk to Greg Walling, a double by Mike Zuppinger, the starting and losing pitcher, a run scoring infield single by Conner Hendrix and a sacrifice fly by Greg Williams. It was the second championship game apperance for the Warriors' franchise. Playing as Los Potros, they lost to the Texas Rangers 10-1 in an 18A league title contest.

The Indians scored two in the top of the first on a two out, two run double by Marty Brown, a ball that left fielder Molina lost in the sun. The Warriors posted singletons in the first three innings for a 3-2 advantage. Alex Vazquez was hit by a pitch and moved to third on two grounder, then scored on a passed ball. In the second, Nolan drove in Pirchardo with a single. Pichard had reached on an error, stole second and went to third on an infield out. The Warriors took their first lead in the third on Ernie Nunez/ leadoff triple and a single by Vazquez.

When play had to be halted in the 18AAA championship game, it ended what would have been a classic finale. The Cardinals rallied from 1-0, 3-1 and 3-2 deficits to take a 4-3 lead after six innings. Chamos went ahead again 6-4 by scoring three runs in the 8th, only to have Ryan McDonald blast a tape measure two run homer in the bottom of the 9th inning to send it into extra innings. Earlier, Ryan Ghianda had smacked a solo home run. The game was marred by five ejections---four of them Cardinals and one Chamo. Danny LaPerna and Rob Wiley were thrown out for arguing balls and strikes, and Charlie Pratt and Jim Romano were thumbed for the 10th inning fight. Also ejected at that time was Ralph Velez of Chamos. Chamos manager David Machado, who was coaching third base, had to be taken to JFK Hospital. He suffered a concussion and broken right thumb.
