News and Announcements

The Caribbean Tigres won the Wood Bat Division of the NABA's Florida World Series for their second national championship, but it wasn't easy. The Tigres rallied from a 2-0 deficit to nip the New Jersey Clippers 3-2 in the semifinals, then edged the Northern Illinois Cubs by the same score in the championship game Sunday, November 12 at Roger Dean Stadium. The Tigres had won the NABA's 18AA Phoenix World Championship in 2005, then finished runnerup in the 18AAA 2006 Phoenix Tournament. They finished with a perfect 7-0 record in the tournament, also claiming the pool play championship. The San Jose (CA) Tigers outscored the Duchess (NY) Dodgers, featuring many current and a couple of former NABA Palm Beach players, l9-7 in the Open Division title contest at Roger Dean Stadium Sunday morning. Christian Taboas' double in the bottom of the 9th pulled out the Tigres' semifinal win over the Clippers, and he added three hits, including a double, in the championship tilt. Lefthander Juan Prado baffled the Cubs, allowing only three hits and one unearned run in seven innings to earn Championship Game MVP honors. Wilson Ciprian earned a save, giving up one unearned run in the ninth inning. First baseman Billy Brescia drove in two of the three runs with a pair of singles, and earned Gold Glove honors with his slick fielding skills in the title game. His throw to third base on a ground ball snuffed out a budding Cubs' rally after an opening double in the fifth inning. He later pulled off an unassisted double play, snaring a line drive and stepping on first to nail the runner in the 8th. Third baseman Ryan MacDonald, a Home Run Sports Arrigo Dodgers' teammate of Brescia's drove in the other Tigres run with a 7th inning single to give the Caribbeans a 2-1 lead. Brescia's second RBI single followed that. MacDonald also had a double in the second inning. The Cubs' runs scored on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Bill Posteluk and an RBI hi8t by third sacker Mike Pierce in the 9th. Pierce had two of the Cubs' four hits. Brian Henschel went the distance on the mound for the Cubs to suffer the disappointing defeat. In the Open Division title clash, San Jose won a seesaw battle against the Duchess Dodgers, who had six current and two former Palm Beach League players in their lineup. The New York Staters held the lead four times before yielding the edge in the late innings. Wayne Machado, who entered the game as a substitute at third base, singled in a sixth inning run to tie the game at 6-6, then knocked in another ion the 8th with a single to put the Tigers ahead to stay 7-6. They addedd two insurance runs in the ninth, then held off the Dodgers who scored one in the bottom of the 9th. Machado earned Championship Game MVP honors. Gold Glove honors went to left fielder Keith Buck who handled four chances flawlessly, including two fine running catches in the second inning. Buck also had two hits. Rob Wiley had three hits, including two doubles, and two runs batted in for the Dodgers. Second baseman Bevin Gouveia loed the Duchess gang with four singles and a walk. He also had an RBI. The complete tournament results are posted on the NABA's national website at www.dugout.org.

TIGRES FALL SHORT IN BID FOR ANOTHER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Caribbean Tigres came up short, losing to Rey's Pizza of Miami 4-2 in the championship game of the NABA National Championship Tournament's Wood Bat Division Sunday at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.  The Tigres had won the tournament's inaugural in 2006.

The Open (Metal Bat) Division title was won by a team from one of NABA's newest leagues---the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina White Sox, who defeated the Denver Bears by the same 4-2 margin.

Both the Tigres and Rey's Pizza brought 6-0 tournament slates into the championship, with Rey's taking pool honors on the basis of fewer runs allowed in pool games, since the two teams were not scheduled against each other in pool play.

The Tigres scored a run in the top of the second when Francis Dinzey singled, stole second, went to third on an infield out and scored on an RBI single by Melvin Bruno.  The infield out was a key play in the game as Billy Brescia grounded one wide of the bag, and Miami pitcher Eddie Oropesa appeared to be late in covering the bag, but Brescia was ruled out in a very close play.

Rey's came back with two in their half of the inning on a leadoff walk to first baseman Jorge Toca, an infield hit by Maikel Jova, an RBI single by third sacker Jose Cano and a sacrifice fly by Carlos Castillo.

The Tigres evened the score with a run in thje third on singles by Stalin DeLaRosa and Ramon Bautista, a balk which moved runners to second and third and a one out infield roller by Jose Acuna.

The Miamians took the lead for good with two in the fourth.  A leadoff walk to Osmany Santana, and hits by Toca and Jova loaded the bases.  Osviel Oiz singled to score Santana, and Toca appeared to be thrown out at the plate, but the umpires ruled that catcher Melvin Bruno dropped the ball.  Tigres' starter and loser Wilson Ciprian got out of the jam with no further damage, but his counterpart Oropesa practically shut the door on the Tigres from the third inning on to not only earn the win, but Most Valuable Player honors.  Toca was selected as the game's Gold Glove winner after playing stellar defense---three assists, fifteen put outs and a couple of fine stretches to prevent throwing errors.

Oropesa allowed only hit after the third inning, walked only one and struck out five.  Ciprian gave up seven hits and notched three strikeouts.

Dinzey had two of his team's five hits.  DeLaRosa, Bautista and Bruno had the others.  Jova led all hitters, collecting three of Rey's seven hits.  Jesus Amettler had a double, Oiz and Cano had RBI hits and Toca had a single and scored twice.

Rey's wound up 7-0, the Tigres 6-1 for the four day tournament.

In Myrtle Beach's win over Denver, Phil Frischolz pitched the complete game victory, giving up fourteen hits but pitching out of jam after jam, and getting great defensive support, particularly from third baseman Brooks Garris who turned two spectacular double plays to thwart Bears' rallies.  Frischolz was selected as the game MVP, an emotional moment for him and the entire Myrtle Beach team.  Phil's father, who had intended to come to Florida to watch the tournament, is hospitalized with lymphoma and doctors have given the elder Frischolz only about a month to live.

Denver started aggressively with a run in the first innings when Denver manager and third baseman Joe Collins singled in Jason Ezell who had walked and reached second on an attempted double steal.  Max Johnson of the Palm Beach League had singled, stole second and third, but was cut down trying to steal home on the front end of that double steal.

Frischolz doubled home a run in the bottom of the inning, and Myrtle Beach added runs in the second, seventh and eighth innings, while Denver managed only one more in the top of the 8th.  The Mile High team left twelve men on base and contributed to their own demise by committing five errors.  The White Sox, who wound up 7-0 and were the pool winners, had eleven hits and played errorless baseball.  Bob Diaz, pitching for the fourth time in the tournament, took the loss for Denver and also went all the way.   Denver went 5-2 for the week.

Collins led all hitters with four hits, one of them a double.  Kasey Fink had three hits for Denver, one of them a triple.  Austin Dooley had three singles and Frischolz had a double and single for the White Sox.

The Caribbean Tigres won the 18AAA title for the 8th time—their third in succession—by beating the Home Run Sports Dodgers at the Lantana Sports Complex.  After spotting a run in the second inning, they tied it in the third and broke it open with a 4-run fourth. Marlon Hernandez singled to put the Tigres ahead 2-1, followed by a bases loaded triple by Juan Veras to make it 5-1 and the Tigres coasted from there. Brian Fitzsimmons homered to lead off the fourth for the Dodgers, but the Tigres put it away with six more runs, all off reliever Brian Holden. Starting and losing pitcher Mike Draper gave up five runs in his five innings of work.  Jose Acuna went the first six for the win, with Wilson Ciprian, Alexis Sosa and Gustavo Lopez pitching one inning apiece. Rafael Rodriguez, Geraldo Vasquez (double) and Acuna (RBI) led the Tigres with three hits apiece.  Jose Espino had a double and single, driving in two runs and Veras, selected as the game’s MVP, drove in four with a sacrifice fly and the three-run triple. Emilio Vargas had two hits.  Andres Rodriguez banged out a two bagger.  Melvin Bruno, Hernandez (RBI), and Stalin DeLaRosa (RBI) had one hit apiece.  Jared Cohen had two hits and an RBI for the Dodgers.  Ryan MacDonald singled in a run, and Fitzsimmons socked a HR and drew two walks.  Billy Brescia also had a single. In addition to the eight league titles, the Tigres have won three Citrus Classics, and adding some of the Dodgers’ team, have won national tournaments in both Arizona and Florida.

Veteran Jose Pena has been the "face" and the "arm" of the Dobson Roofing Hurricanes for years and he pitched them to another league championship in the 18AA league windup.  The Hurricanes dispatched the upstart Brewers in a methodical 8-1 win over the Brew Crew at the Lantana Sports Complex.  Pena went the route, striking out six and giving up only one run.  He had plenty of offensive and defensive support from his teammates.  Craig Spatara and Guy Bichacho both homered and Bichacho added a triple and an RBI single.  Playing manager John Dobson had two hits and scored three runs.  Brian Schwal had an RBI double.  Chuck Tooch also doubled, and Carlos Sanchez, Willie Gomez and Eddie Gonzalez added singles.  The Canes also played flawlessly on defense.  The only Brewers run scored in the fourth inning when Ryan Dolan led off the inning with a triple and scored on an infield roller by Marcelo Vila.  Don Hennessy doubled and singled for the Brew Crew.  Joe Mazzeo, Eddie Vasquez and Ron Fernandez chipped in one single apiece.  The Hurricanes took advantage of defensive lapses by the Brewers, scoring four unearned runs in the first two innings off starter and loser Anthony Batton.  Pena was selected as the game's Most Valuable Player.  The Hurricanes previously won the 2003 and 2006 spring titles.  The Brewers became the Cinderella team in the 18AA league, downing the Rangers and the Cuban Sugar Kings in the playoffs to make their first appearance in the league championship game.
