BEACH BUMS RALLY TO WIN NABA'S CITRUS CLASSIC

Posted by Lou Palmer at Jan 22, 2010 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

(REVISED) The South Florida Beach Bums overwhelmed the New York Thunderdogs 8-0 to win the NABA's Citrus Classic Wood Bat tournament at the Santaluces Complex on Monday, January 18.

Mike Terroni, who pitched twenty innings over two days, blanked the Thunderdogs on five hits, going the distance to earn the tournament's Most Valuable Player Award. After escaping a bases loaded situation in the first inning, Terroni was practically untouchable the rest of the way. Terroni kept the Thunderdogs hitting the ball on the ground or harmless fly balls to give the Palm Beach League based team the championship. Terroni is a member of the NY/NJ White Sox of the Rockland/Westchester, NY Adult League and was recruited for the tournament by the Beach Bums.

Terroni had plenty of offensive support as his teammates pounded out 15 hits, including seven doubles and a triple. Centerfielder Jimmy Efre, banged out a triple and two doubles. Jason Bryan had two doubles and drove in two runs. Matt Keenan cranked out three hits, including a double. His two run single with the bases loaded in the first inning put the Beach Bums ahead to stay. Danny LaPerna had a double and single, Dave Salley two singles, and Rob Wiley a double. Will Mucha and shortstop Joe Torre each had a hit, with Torre lashing an RBi single. Torre played flawlessly at shortstop and earned the Gold Glove award. He had four assists and two putouts and started a double play.

The Beach Bums played outstanding defensive baseball and committed no errors. Efre also played a fine game in center, snagging five fly balls. Matt Barad had two hits, Dino Mazzota, Vic Gaines and John Huerta one apiece for the Thunderdogs, who finished 3-0 in pool play before losing in the title game. The Thunderdogs had defeated the Beach Bums 7-3 in eleven innings on Saturday, the opening day of the tournament.

At the beginning of the day, it looked like the Beach Bums might not make the championship game. They trailed 5-1 against the East Coast Titans as they started the completion of a game suspended on Sunday by torrential rains. They allowed two more runs to trail by six going to the sixth inning. They rallied for six runs to tie, fell behind 9-7 going to the bottom of the 9th, then scored three runs to win it 10-9 and advance to the final. James Schroeder's triple scored two to make it 9-9, then Torre lashed a single to left for the walkoff victory.

Another Palm Beach League team, the Pirates, didn't fare as well, losing all three of their games in the tournament. However, they were playing without their two best pitchers, Jason Plocek and Damon Gammons. Several league players hooked up with tournament teams as pool players. The Pirates hope to clinch the regular season title this Sunday when they visit the Tigers in a 9:30AM game on Sataluces' Field #2. .The Bucs need one more win or one more Rangers' loss to take the division regular season championship.

The Rangers opted to play in another tournament in the Orlando area and failed to win one of their three pool games, but did manage a tie.

Check out the complete tournament scoreboard on the NABA national web site at www.dugout.org.

NATIONALS TOP AMERICANS IN 18AA ALL STAR ‘PLUNKFEST’

The Nationals (Pirates, Sugar Kings, Dodgers, Braves) survived being hit by pitches six times to down the Americans (Mariners, Rangers, Marlins and Tigers) 10-5 in the twice postponed 18AA All Star Game December 22 at Santaluces.

A four run first inning and a three run third inning helped lift the Nats to victory. Singles by Damon Gammons (Pirates), Joe Perez (Sugar Kings), and Sean Keller (Pirates), sandwiched around a hit batsman, fielder’s choice and a walk comprised the big inning off starter Rick Mullan (Mariners), who lasted only 1/3 of an inning before leaving with an injury. Reliever Marty Guethler (Mariners) struck out two to end the inning, but also gave up Keller’s two run single.

Nestor Sanjurjo (Sugar Kings) drove in the first run on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded. Perez knocked in the second run with his base hit. Three more in the third gave the Nationals a 7-0 lead for starting pitcher Jason Plocek, who pitched three shutout innings, allowing only a hit by the Marlins’ Mike Mitchell. He struck out four, walked two and hit a batter, and was the winning pitcher. He aided his own cause with a single and an RBI double to earn Most Valuable Player honors. Rick Mullan (Mariners) took the loss.

Four walks, three singles and a hit batsman gave the Nats three in the third. Luis Gonzalez (Pirates) walked with the bases loaded, Sanjurjo singled in a run, and Yandri Cabrera was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Plocek and Keller also had hits in the inning. Keller’s hit came on a ground ball that hit runner Perez. The Nationals made it 8-0 with a run in the fourth when Anthony Rosa (Pirates) stole second, third and home after drawing a two out walk. The Americans scored five unanswered runs, and Emilio Vargas (Rangers) blanked the Nationals on no hits and three strikeouts.

In the 5th, Richard Pearce (Rangers) doubled and scored on a single by Teddy Saldivar. In the 6th, Eddie Vazquez (Rangers) reached on an error, moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on a wild pitch by Mario Estevez (Sugar Kings). And, in the 7th, John Denski (Marlins) clouted a long double to center field and eventually scored on an infield roller by Mike Payne (Tigers). They made it 8-5 with two more in the 8th. Pearce reached on an error by the catcher, and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Barry Glinton (Mariners) singled in another run.

The Pirates tacked on two more in the 9th on a single by Jason Martin (Dodgers), an RBI double by Plocek and a run scoring single by Damon Gammons rounded out the scoring before time ran out.

FALL 09-AMERICANS WIN 18AAA ALL STAR GAME

AMERICAN ALL STARS RALLY TO BEAT NATIONALS IN 18AAA ALL STAR CLASH

The American All Stars, featuring players from the Rockhounds, Leones and Royals, scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to beat the Nationals 7-4 at the Santaluces Complex in Lantana on Wednesday, Dec. 16

The National Stars were players from the South Florida Beach Bums, Chamos and White Sox. A ten minute rain delay and an injury to Jose Corea (Royals) in the fifth inning forced the game to be ended by curfew at 10:00PM. Corea was hit by a pitch thrown by Harving Lejarazo of Chamos and suffered a broken nose. He was first administered to by Emergency Medical Technicians who came to the field, and later treated and released from JFK Hospital in Lantana. Fortunately, there was no damage to Jose's eye and no stitches were needed.

The Nationals held an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by White Sox third baseman Jason Davis, and pitchers Matt Schnelly (Beach Bums) for two innings, Victor Prieto (Chamos) for one and Lejarazo for one kept it that way. However, the Americans broke through against Lejarazo in the bottom of the fifth. Danny LaPerna (Rockhounds) launched a long triple to left center and scored on a wild pitch to tie it at 1-1. Corea was then hit by a pitch and courtesy runners Eric Morales (Rockhounds) and Max Johnson (Royals) scored on a two out single by Jorge Lopez (Leones) and a throwing runner on a rundown between second and third.

The Nationals snapped back to tie it with two in the sixth on Ricky Dominguez' two run single, but the Americans took the lead for good with three more in the bottom of the sixth. Thiree walks, a wild pitch, stolen base and a two run single by the Royals' catcher James Schroeder made it 6-3.

Both teams added a run in the seventh, and after the Nationals failed to score in the top of the 8th inning, the game was called due to the time limit. LaPerna, who pitched two innings in relief, got the win, and his Rockhounds' teammate Brian Fitzsimmons pitched a scoreless inning for the save. Charles Sano, who gave up three unerned runs in the sixth inning, was tagged with the defeat. Schroeder was the only player on either team to get two hits, along with two runs batted in. He was selected as the game's Most Valuable Player and was given an NABA MVP All Star plaque. All participants were given an NABA Commemorative All Star shirt. The 18AA All Star game is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 7PM at Santaluces. .
