SPRNG 2009-ALL STAR GAMES

Posted by Lou Palmer at Jul 14, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
NATIONALS NAB WIN IN 18AAA MIDSUMMER CLASSIC

The National All Stars, comprised of players from Chamos, the South Florida Beach Bums and Orioles, defeated the American All Stars (Cardinals, Leones, Royals) 4-1 on Wednesday night at the Santaluces Complex. The Most Valuable Pitcher award (NABA All Star plaque) went to David Dotero of the Beach Bums who started and pitched three scoreless innings for the Nationals. Most Valuable Player award went to Carlos Dominguez (Chamos) who had one hit, two RBIs and a stolen base. He also pitched two scoreless innings for the save, striking out three.

18AA ALL STAR GAME CANCELED

Seems like the Baseball Gods just wouldn't let this game be played. The 18AA All Star game was postponed twice because of weather--first on June 23, then on June 30. The game was rescheduled for Tuesday, July 7 at the Santaluces Complex, and this time it was STRIKE THREE for the midseason Classic---but for a different reason other than the weather. This time it was ---NO LIGHTS!!!. After playing into the bottom of the third inning and with the Nationals on their way to what seemed like an easy victory, (6-0 after two and a half), the game had to be called off because THE LIGHTS DID NOT GO ON. The Palm Beach County Department of Parks and Recreation uses a national service, based in Iowa, to operate the lighting systems at the county ball fields. Apparently, because of a lightning hit about two weeks ago, the NABA Palm Beach League was inadvertently deactivated from the system. Thus, all attempts by the league to get the lights turned on fell on deaf ears when the league contacted the system in Iowa. The PB County Parks and Rec Department has reactivated us so that we will be able to manage the light situation by calling a national number. That is, unless another lightning storm deactivates us.

18AA ALL STAR PARTICIPANTS

AMERICAN DIVISION--Manager Nick Intagliata, Drew Davis, Don Gunn, Vinnie Intagliata, Adrian Gonzalez, Steve Hibbs, and Jeff Prater (White Sox); Jonathan Murphy, Anthony Cruz, Junior Reyes and Eddie Vazquez (Rangers); Jason Russianoff and Milt Muller (Glory Days); Frank Vasquez and Gabe Rodriguez (Mariners), and Andrew Rubin (Warriors).

NATIONAL DIVISION-Manager Tom Brodrick, Coach Noel Vazquez, Rudy Garcia, Fernando Gonzalez, Mario Perez, Mike Farrell, and Matt Weihs (Cubs); Shaun Gullett, Kevin Davis and Reggie Cruz (Brewers), Papo Torres and Ryan Pender (Dodgers); Sean Keller (Pirates) and Steve Grove (Braves). Before the light situation halted the game, Weihs had pitched three hitless innings, allowed only one base runner when he dropped a throw from first baseman Mike Farrell. Mario Perez had a pair of singles, Farrell drove in two runs with a single and a sacrifice fly, and Brock had an RBI single. Gullett, Garcia and Gonzalez had one hit apiece.

SPRING 2009-PROS TAP PALM BEACH LEAGUE PLAYERS

Posted by Lou Palmer at May 2, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
BEACH BUMS, ROYALS PLAYERS SIGN WITH PROS

Billy Falconio and Matt Schnelly of the South Florida Beach Bums, and Tony Flores and Joe Torre, who played with the Beach Bums and the Royals, have signed contracts to play Independent pro ball. Falconio, a shortstop who also can catch, has signed with the River City River Hawks of the Frontier League. Falconio played at Polk Community College, then two years at Palm Beach Atlantic, batted .316 with 16 home runs and 133 RBI as a collegian. He batted .333 in 26 games with the Beach Bums. Schnelly, who pitched at Lipscomb University in Tennessee, and the Palm Beach Miracle and Beach Bums in the Palm Beach League, is headed to camp with the Texarcana Gunslingers of the Continental Baseball League, also an Independent circuit. Joining Schnelly in the CBL will be former Royal Tony Flores, who has signed on with the Bay Area Toros, the 2008 league champions.

Flores played for the Royals in the Fall 2008 season, and was with the Beach Bums in the 2009 Citrus Classic. Joe Torre, no relation to the LA Dodgers' manager, will be playing pro ball in Italy. Torre was signed by the Riccione Dolphins of the Italian Baseball Federation. The New Jerseyan played briefly with the Royals, as well as with the Beach Bums during the Palm Beach Challenge, a tournament for mostly college players in March. Jamie Priester, the Royals' shortstop, also plans to play in the Italian League although at the present time he has not been assigned to a team. The Italian Baseball Federation held tryouts here in the Palm Beach area, coordinated by Beach Bums' manager Charles Sano, who works in group sales for the Florida Marlins. At least two other players were offered contracts to play in Italy, but reportedly turned them down to stay here in the States.

Nineteen players were drafted by Palm Beach League teams following tryouts Sunday, March 1 at Seminole Palms Park in Royal Palm Beach. Four of the six 18AAA teams participated, with the defending champion Chamos and runnerup Cardinals, opting to skip the event. Three of the four drafted one player each.

The Orioles, who last played in the 18AA league in the spring 2008 season, chose 19-year old pitcher Dale Smith III of Loxahatchee. Smith is a hard thrower and should fit in with the O's rotation.

John Schumacher, a 22-year old second baseman from Port St.Lucie was selected by the Royals, who will be playing their second season in the 18AAA league. Schumacher played high school ball at Fort Pierce Central, American Legion ball with Post 258 and played in the NABA Treasure Coast League in 2007.

The Ameriland Leones, who will be returning to 18AAA after taking the fall season off, drafted middle infielder Vincent Monet of Westin, near Fort Lauderdale. Monet is just 18 years old and showed nice defensive skills. The South Florida Beach Bums are seeking a catcher and declined to draft.

18AA teams took the remaining 16 players with the Pirates drafting five. Their first pick was Eviel Perez, who was playing softball on an adjacent field with Cuban players and after seeing the Palm Beach draft came over to the baseball diamond. Perez demonstrated ability as a hitter and in the outfield. The Bucs also drafted 31-year old outfielder-third baseman-pitcher Matt Halleran of Royal Palm Beach, 19-year old third baseman Sean Keller of Wellington, 30-year old first baseman Cliff Payne of West Palm Beach, who played one year at Clemson University in South Carolina and 45-year old pitcher-infielder Miguel Diaz of Boynton Beach.

The LA Dodgers (formerly Super Sox) drafted two players, but dealt their first pick, 21-year old second baseman Andrew Rubin to the Warriors for future considerations. The Dodgers also selected 22-year old outfielder Jeffrey Brimmer, whose experience includes four years in an MSBL league in Washington, DC.

The Marlins took four players---22-year old Sergio Teruggi Jr of Pompano Beach, who plays two infield positions, outfield and can pitch; 33-year old utility player Blair Palmer, who has played with two Palm Beach teams in the past; 35-year old pitcher-outfielder Mitch Block, who has previous Palm Beach League experience and 22-year old Roque Rodon, a pitcher-first baseman from Boynton Beach.

The Braves took five players, including 52-year old Mark Cleveland, who showed fine hitting and pitching ability; 39-year old second baseman-outfielder Keith Harkins of Lake Worth; 30-year old second baseman-outfielder Rafael Melendez of Loxahatchee; 21-year old Phil Nelson, a lefty who played first and third base, outfield and can do some pitching. He previously was with the 18AA Marlins. Their final pick was 48-year old first baseman-outfielder Paul Cingolari of Jupiter.

The expansion White Sox, Atlantic Coast, Brewers, Mariners and Warriors opted not to draft.
