Red Sox take first game of Second Half

Posted by Doug Richter at May 12, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The weather didn’t look like it was going to let the Red Sox and Cubs play on Monday night, but it held off and allowed the Red Sox to return to their form of the early season and walk away with a 10-1 victory, improving their overall record to 4-3. On this night, the Red Sox took control of the game early as they scored 4 runs in the first inning. Solid hitting by Jake Frazier, Connor Love, Spencer Chupik and Tyler Richter gave us an early cushion that helped us jump to the early lead. The Red Sox defense continued to make solid plays in the field as David Molaison, Jay Sellers, Saylor Green and Jack Harley each made stellar defensive plays.

Since his game winning hit against the Nationals, Pearce Landfear has been on a roll at the plate. On this night, Pearce went 3-3 with solid hits in the gap during each at-bat. Pearce’s confidence is soaring as we head into the second half of the season.

Michael Zanti played very well behind the plate at the catcher position while Sam McCrary continued to shine in each position he is challenged with.

Next up for the Red Sox, the Cardinals; Saturday at 4:45.

Red Sox drop a tough one to Yankees

Posted by Doug Richter at May 2, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Saturday's stormy weather held off and it was another great day of baseball.  The Red Sox debuted the kids pitching on this memorable day as Jake Frazier and Tyler Richter made their first appearances on the mound in a real game.  The two threw the  ball well and gave the Red Sox defense a chance to shine.  In 8 year old games, a pitcher is limited to 50 pitches before requiring substitution, so in a typical 6 inning game, we should expect to use 3 pitchers.

Jake started the game while Tyler relieved him in the third inning and they both threw strikes.  Throwing off a mound from 45' is a lot different than throwing off of level ground, so the challenge was hard, but both elevated their games and performed very well.

The Red Sox continued to hit the ball well, with big hits by David and Tyler.  David smashed a double and Tyler hit the first triple of his career.  Both hits were clean shots into the outfield.  Defensively, our infield and outfield each made smart plays with good stops and limited the Yankees' run production.  But the Yankees built up a 7-2 lead before the Red Sox got things rolling.

In the 4th inning, the Red Sox put together an excellent rally that scored 4 runs, but we ran into the Time limit and had to end the game before we could complete our come-from-behind effort, resulting in a 7-6 loss to the Yankees.  The Yankees are another good team that we battled to the end.

Up next is the Tigers on Friday night at 7:30.

Red Sox Win! Red Sox Win!

Posted by Doug Richter at May 1, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Red Sox laid claim to a new nickname on this chilly night at Fleet Park.....the "Cardiac Kids".  With a constant flair for the dramatic, the Red Sox got back to their winning ways with an incredible come-from-behind victory over the Nationals on Wednesday night.  The game was yet another back and forth contest that could have gone either way, but the Red Sox found a way to win.

Highlights from the game included stellar outfield play once again, with Sam, Jack, Pearce and Saylor covering their positions like seasoned veterans.  As the quality of teams that we play improves, the amount of outfield activity increases, which makes good plays imperative to victory.  Our outfielders have consistently played smart, heads up ball.  I hope this play continues into the second half of the season.

At the plate, we continue to hit the ball consistently.  In four games, we have scored a total of 55 runs.  So, leading the charge on this night were Jake and Michael, each hitting 4 for 4 on the night.  Right behind them was Spencer, Jack, David and Saylor who each went 3 for 4.  But the real drama came in the bottom of the 6th inning.  In our last at bat, we trailed 16-13.  Consecutive hits by Connor and Michael go things rolling to start the inning with each batter scoring.  But, with two outs, the score tied 16-16 and David on second and Saylor at first, a struggling Pearce came to bat.  Pearce faced a two strike count and one pitch left.  With those things in his mind, he blocked it all out and CRUSHED a line drive to left field that scored David from second base.  Red Sox Win!  Red Sox Win!  We pulled out a 17-16 win against a great Nationals team.

The next game for the Red Sox?  A rivalry match against the Yankees on Saturday at 3:00.  Bring all the family to support the Red Sox for what will be a very spirited contest.

Red Sox Fall to Talented Athletics Team

Posted by Doug Richter at Apr 26, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Red Sox dropped their first game of the season to a very talented Athletics team, 7-6 on Saturday afternoon.  It was a beautiful day for baseball at Fleet Park!  This game featured two previously undefeated teams, and it proved to be a test for each team,

Jake led things off for the Sox with a double to left field, but we knew it would be a tough game in the first inning, when the Athletics defense snagged a line drive hit by Tyler that surely would have scored Jake from second base.  That defensive gem held the Sox scoreless in the first, and would prove to be an important play.  The A's jumped out first to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Sox climbed back in it in the second inning.  Consecutive hits by Spencer, Jay and Sam got things rolling and resulted in tying the game up at 2-2 after two innings.  Fantastic outfield plays by Jack, Saylor, Pearce and Sam kept things close through the middle of the game, while hits from David, Michael and Connor gave us a 5-4 lead in the third inning.

In a game that was back and forth the A's took a 7-5 lead into the 6th inning, setting up for an exciting end of the game.  Spencer led off the inning with hit and scored on an RBI single from Jack.  But, the Athletics proved too tough and their defense snatched the last few outs, giving the Sox a 7-6 defeat.  That run in the first inning proved to be costly.

An outstanding effort from everybody on a 90 degree day resulted in a game that either team could have won.  We'll see the Athletics again on Saturday, May 23.  That should be a good game as well!

Next up:  Wednesday night we host the Nationals.

Red Sox come out of break with BIG 12-6 WIN!

Posted by Doug Richter at Apr 23, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Red Sox answered the call on Friday night with a big win against the previously undefeated Mets.  After a 14 day layoff, the Red Sox were in action on a beautiful Friday night for a contest between two good teams.  The Mets grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but their rally was cut short by some fine defensive plays, and Jake Frazier cut the Mets down with a fantastic play at the plate to end the inning.  The Red Sox came back in the second inning with some clutch hits by Sam and Saylor and took the lead 2-1.

The Red Sox broke things open in the 3rd inning with four consecutive hits by the top of the order; Jake, Connor, Michael and Tyler.  All four batters scored and the Red Sox took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the 3rd.

Again in the 4th, the Red Sox bats were alive, and the highlight of the inning was a blast by Connor Love that cleared the bases.  Connor tried some aggressive base running, but the Mets made an outstanding relay from deep centerfield and made a perfect tag at the plate.  But Connor was credited with triple and 2 RBI's in another big inning where the Red Sox grabbed a 10-3 lead.

The last two innings were possibly the best defensive innings of the game where Jake Frazier, now at shortstop, was like a vacuum cleaner.  Everything hit his way became an out.  Line drives, fly balls and grounders all found their resting place in Jake's glove.  His defensive gems led to a final score of 12-6, and the Red Sox improved to 2-0 on the season.

Next game, Saturday morning at 11:30 against yet another outstanding team, the Athletics.
