Red Sox drop a tough one to Yankees

Posted by Doug Richter on May 02 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

Saturday's stormy weather held off and it was another great day of baseball.  The Red Sox debuted the kids pitching on this memorable day as Jake Frazier and Tyler Richter made their first appearances on the mound in a real game.  The two threw the  ball well and gave the Red Sox defense a chance to shine.  In 8 year old games, a pitcher is limited to 50 pitches before requiring substitution, so in a typical 6 inning game, we should expect to use 3 pitchers.

Jake started the game while Tyler relieved him in the third inning and they both threw strikes.  Throwing off a mound from 45' is a lot different than throwing off of level ground, so the challenge was hard, but both elevated their games and performed very well.

The Red Sox continued to hit the ball well, with big hits by David and Tyler.  David smashed a double and Tyler hit the first triple of his career.  Both hits were clean shots into the outfield.  Defensively, our infield and outfield each made smart plays with good stops and limited the Yankees' run production.  But the Yankees built up a 7-2 lead before the Red Sox got things rolling.

In the 4th inning, the Red Sox put together an excellent rally that scored 4 runs, but we ran into the Time limit and had to end the game before we could complete our come-from-behind effort, resulting in a 7-6 loss to the Yankees.  The Yankees are another good team that we battled to the end.

Up next is the Tigers on Friday night at 7:30.
