Red Sox Fall to Talented Athletics Team

Posted by Doug Richter on Apr 26 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

The Red Sox dropped their first game of the season to a very talented Athletics team, 7-6 on Saturday afternoon.  It was a beautiful day for baseball at Fleet Park!  This game featured two previously undefeated teams, and it proved to be a test for each team,

Jake led things off for the Sox with a double to left field, but we knew it would be a tough game in the first inning, when the Athletics defense snagged a line drive hit by Tyler that surely would have scored Jake from second base.  That defensive gem held the Sox scoreless in the first, and would prove to be an important play.  The A's jumped out first to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Sox climbed back in it in the second inning.  Consecutive hits by Spencer, Jay and Sam got things rolling and resulted in tying the game up at 2-2 after two innings.  Fantastic outfield plays by Jack, Saylor, Pearce and Sam kept things close through the middle of the game, while hits from David, Michael and Connor gave us a 5-4 lead in the third inning.

In a game that was back and forth the A's took a 7-5 lead into the 6th inning, setting up for an exciting end of the game.  Spencer led off the inning with hit and scored on an RBI single from Jack.  But, the Athletics proved too tough and their defense snatched the last few outs, giving the Sox a 7-6 defeat.  That run in the first inning proved to be costly.

An outstanding effort from everybody on a 90 degree day resulted in a game that either team could have won.  We'll see the Athletics again on Saturday, May 23.  That should be a good game as well!

Next up:  Wednesday night we host the Nationals.
