Newsblast #6 for MV Cross Country: Practice Friday, Scott Bauhs Meet, and more
Dear Parents and Student Athletes,
Last weekend was chock full of XC activity, but this weekend, most of the team gets a rest. Here’s the latest news.
Practice this Friday: Practice will be at 3:30 as usual. Coach Kara and Athletic Director Andy Popper will be in charge of practice tomorrow since Coach Mandee and Coach Davis will be with the varsity top 7 squads in Portland. If you want to follow the action in Portland on Saturday, there may be live results available for our team’s races at 12:05 (girls) and 12:35 (boys), but no link has yet been posted. Check the meet website for updates.
Important Meet Oct. 3: If you are taking the SAT on Oct. 3 and will not participate in the Scott Bauhs meet, please reply to this email RIGHT AWAY and let me know. I am building a list for the coaches of athletes excused from this meet for the SAT. As you most of you already know, when the team finalized its 2015 meet schedule, we replaced the Castro Valley Invite that we have done in the past with the Scott Bauhs Invitational on Oct. 3. Scott Bauhs is a critical race for the team because it gives ALL the team the opportunity to run a 3-mile race in advance of the 3-mile races at the EBAL Center Meet on Oct. 14. It is also an opportunity to preview the course that we will run for the EBAL Championships, which is very helpful for both new and returning runners. The Scott Bauhs meet will also serve as another data point for the selection of teams for future varsity and JV races, including the Mt. SAC trip. The coaches want to see all athletes running in this meet. They are aware, however, that some athletes registered to take the SAT on this day and may not be able to reschedule the exam.
No Buses to/from Scott Bauhs Meet: We will send more information about this meet next week, but as an advance heads up, parents will need to drive their athletes to and from this meet. Kids are not allowed to drive themselves per district policy. We do encourage informal family carpooling so please start arranging among yourselves. The meet is held at the nearby Shadow Cliffs Regional Park in Pleasanton. As a team, we are trying to keep expenses low without inconveniencing parents too much. We tried to pick one of the closest meets as one of the non-bus meets.
Tuesday Uniform and Warm-Ups Distribution: For those athletes who ordered warm ups but didn’t receive them yet, please plan to pick them up at practice Tuesday. By now, everyone should have their racing uniform (shirt & shorts), but anyone who still needs to purchase one or exchange a size, can get help Tuesday. (Uniform / warm ups order form)
Volunteers Needed: In the immortal words of Roseanne Rosannadanna, “It’s always something. If it ain’t one thing, it’s another.” Yep, we still need more help. Next up is our team’s turn at the Oct. 17 football game snack shack. This is a very social and fun way to volunteer. Details are on the Sign Up Genius. We need about 12 more XC parents. I’m also looking for a few good men and women for some other tasks. Thank you to ALL who have already volunteered. The team could not manage without the help of all of you great, active parents!
$17.50 is Such a Deal, Such A Deal! The
suggested team donation amounts to only $17.50 per week for a fitness
program and team building experience that will pay dividends for life.
Please help our parent-funded team by donating soon. If you can’t swing
the full $245 suggested donation, how about $200 or $100? According to
the school, our team is short of its budget by $8,280 dollars. That
means about 34 families have not donated. If you are one of them, please
consider making a donation. Parents, please help our coaches continue
to focus their care and attention on developing our runners (and not on
budget worries). Every donation is appreciated, no matter how small!
Enjoy your weekends and Go Mustangs!

2015 Overnight Relay - Results
After a busy morning at the Nike Invitational in Concord, the team regrouped at 7pm for yet another epic Overnight Relay, raising money for the Middletown Fire Relief fund. A battle of the colors started things off with rousing competition in a variety of events, capped off with a tug-o-war clash. The white team seemed to be everywhere - taking the prize for the evening. On the track, the team managed 103.8 miles while enjoying some great bonding during the relatively warm night. Official results posted.

- Buses There: All athletes must travel to the meet by bus. Do NOT be late. Meet at MV, north parking lot, at 6:45. Buses will leave at 7am sharp.
- What to Bring: Uniform, sweats, suncreen, plenty of water, snacks, and lunch. Concord's predicted high this Saturday: 97°.
- MV Race Assignments: Download the race assignments PDF. First race is at 8:45 (JV Girls). JV and FS run 2 miles, varsity runs 3 miles. Top 20 in each race get medals, top 25 in the varsity races.
- Meet Info: The meet is held in Concord's Newhall Park. This is a great spectator course (i.e. fans can see lots of the race without too much running around). With over 40 teams entered, the field is full of TOUGH competition and the races will be exciting. Visit the DLS/CHS Nike Cross Country Invitational website for a meet bulletin, race schedule, course maps and other info. Street parking is available for spectators, but EXPECT to have to walk quite a long way to reach the course.
- Buses Back / Dismissal: All must stay to the conclusion of the meet; please do not ask the coaches to leave early. Buses will depart to MV at approx 1pm. Athletes can ride back with their parents, but only after the conclusion of the awards ceremony.
- Team Area: Athletes will be under Monte Vista tents. Parents are encouraged to attend the meet and establish their own "fan base camp" elsewhere. (Kids need some space and separation to prepare for their races.)
- Photos: If you take any good pictures this season of your own athlete or others, please share them with Coach Davis. Email them to mvrunningpix@gmail.com. The more help we get with great photos, the better our team slide show will be at the team banquet. Thanks!
- Help! Who Can Loan the Team a Coffee Urn or Gas Grill? We need a couple coffee urns (the large electric kind for heating up water) for making hot chocolate. We also need someone to bring their gas grill down to the track and unload it (and pick it up the next day). Please email me if you can help.
- Arrival: Athletes should check in at the track NO LATER THAN 6:30 pm.
- Rules & Departure: Once there, no leaving. Anyone leaving early must be checked out by a parent IN PERSON with a coach (even if at 3 a.m.). Nobody leaves until the track is clean (est. around 7:40am). For complete rules, see Overnight Relay page on website.
- Charity: The runners have selected Save Mount Diablo as the charity beneficiary of this event. Runners are asked to donate from their own allowances or pocket money (not from Mom's or Dad's wallet). Suggested amount is $10 per athlete.
- What to Bring: Sleeping bag, pillow, tarp, warm clothes (no tents!). Running gear of course.
- Food & Drink: There will be tables for shared snacks that kids will bring.
- Assignments have been made by the captains and announced at practice:
- Freshman: Desserts
- Sophomores: Snacks (chips, candy, popcorn, etc)
- Juniors: Healthy Snacks (fruit, wraps, veggies)
- Senior Girls: Drinks
- Senior Boys: Drinks or Snacks
- Optional: anyone may bring something to put on the grill for themselves (e.g. hot dogs, meat). Anyone can also bring their own dinner items for themselves from home.
- No waste / No leftovers: everyone must bring back home any leftovers from the snacks they brought for the shared table (or for themselves). We do not have another home meet and we do not want to deal with excess food.
- Assignments have been made by the captains and announced at practice:
