LAKE CASTAIC, CA - Several MSOC members competed the weekend of April 28-29, 2007 in the Big Blue Adventure Race or Xterra Off-Road Triathlon. Full race results HERE. See some great pics from the race HERE. Also Slater took some great pics of the XTERRA TRI and of the ADVENTURE RACE. XTERRA OFF-ROAD TRI It was a fun but tough day for the Multisports crew. Coach Mike Collins let the group of MSOC athletes and groupies who did the race. Collins managed to tie his course record of two year ago by crashing 3 times and came home with number scrapes, bruises, and scratches. Kevin Brown double flated but finished. Robot Rodger nearly destroyed his brothers new mountain bike when the chain ring bolts came loose and broke the chain and had to "skateboard" in the last several miles - but still managed to finish 2nd in his 45-39 division. Mike Cowdrey finished without incident. Jon Clarke got a serious migrane headache the morning of the race and missed doing it due to throwing up all morning. ADVENTURE RACE Slater & Monique Fletcher did the long course Adventure Race as did Jeff Drake. The conditions were very hot and difficult. It was 81 at 9am and reach 108 by 3pm as Jeff mentions in his report below: "We started the race at 0800 with an approx 2 mile run to the kayak staging area. Then it was into the kayaks for a several mile paddle across to the east side of the lake where we were given some coordinates and some bearings to follow to find several checkpoints. One on a tree on the cliff-side, then up to the top of a hill to the water tank to count the number of ball-valves on the tank, then along a hilly dirt road for a few miles of running to find a white pole. We had to draw a picture of the diagram on the top of the pole. Then we ran towards the lake in the general direction of the kayaks, only to discover that the dirt trail ended on one side of a finger of land with the kayaks on the opposite finger. A quick choice - trek back around on land and divert several miles, or swim the 50yds across the inlet in full gear. We made the obvious choice and swam for it. Then we kayaked north up the lake to another inlet a few miles away and trekked up a creek bed about a mile and traversed a 6' deep pond of water to another checkpoint, then back to the kayaks for a very long paddle to the far north end of the lake to find a checkpoint marker tied to a buoy. We then crossed to the west side of the lake and picked up the last checkpoint on the very long paddle back to the kayak TA. Once we landed the kayak and checked in, we ran the 2 miles back to the TA and grabbed the mountain bikes. We then travelled north up into the hills to find 7 checkpoints, some coordinates were provided and others were bearings to plot. By this time, the heat was well over 100 degrees and becoming a real factor. Many teams had atleast one teammate drop from heat exhaustion / cramping. A few were lying by the side of trails trying to recover and not able to find any shade whatsoever. We made a strategic error on this section as we tried to find checkpoints 7-12 sequentially, but 12 was on the very top of a ridge and was not on the route to or from the other checkpoints. We hit 7, 8, and 9 after about 15 miles of hard biking up/down the hills, then trekked for 10 off the beaten path. We then met up with 4 other teams and set out for CP11. We spent over 1 hour trying to find it, and finally happened upon it after giving it up. At this point, after 10 hours of racing, we needed to get to CP12 on top of a far off ridge. We were just too spent to do it, so headed back to the TA for a 10.5 hour DNF. We were not disappointed as we'd done our best and the heat would've stopped us if we had tried to hit CP12. We arrived back at the TA at 6:30pm. We estimated about 10 miles of kayaking, 8 miles of running/trekking, and 25 miles of biking. It was a very challenging course and the proper description is beyond my writing skills." Jeff Drake
