After a first round bye for finishing third in the league, Ladywood defeated Northville in the second round of the playoffs by a score of 9-1. Scoring for Ladywood were juniors Molly Zarb and Mary Beth O'Dea with three goals each, and Jess Blaesser with one. Seniors Katie Karabelski and Sara Sharp picked up the remaining two goals. Getting assists in the victory were O'Dea, Blaesser, Sharp, and senior Meg MacDonell with two, and juniors Jenna Keenan and Joy Troczynski with one. Freshman Lauren Doroghazi also picked up an assist in the game. Danni St. Onge picked up the victory in net. The Blazer's semi-final opponent will be the #1 seed Grosse Pointe South Lady Blue Devils.
Ladywood defeated catholic league rival Regina for the second time this season by a score of 4-2. The win enabled the Blazers to overtake Grosse Pointe North for third place and finish with a record of 15-5. It was a night dominated by the seniors. Senior Katie Karabelski scored, unassisted, early in the first period while shorthanded. Senior Sara Sharp scored early in the second period on a pass by junior Molly Zarb. Senior Tess Castine scored, unassisted, less than a minute later while on a power play. Finishing the scoring for Ladywood was junior Mary Beth O'Dea at the 7:51 mark of the second period. The Blazers played perhaps two of their best periods of the year, but the game was not over. The third period saw seven penalties in total, and some sloppy hockey. Regina scored two goals during the period, but could never get any closer. Senior Meg MacDonell played an inspired game in her last regular season outing as a Blazer, and Freshman Molly Sharp played well in net to get the victory.

The Ladywood Blazers deafeated the Northville Mustangs 8-0 in the seniors last home game as a Blazer. The Blazers first goal didn't come until the 5:27 mark of the first period. Junior Mary Beth O'Dea scored with an assist from Junior Molly Zarb. Ladywood would get its second goal :37 later. Once again it was O'Dea from Zarb and junior Jess Blaesser also helped out on the goal. The second period saw Ladywood score four times. Blaesser scored twice with assists from O'Dea on the first goal and Senior Meg MacDonell on the second. Senior Katie Karabelski scored the next two with an assist from senior Sara Sharp on the first goal and Meg MacDonell and freshman Danielle Foley on the second. The third period saw both Blaesser and Karabelski scoring. It was the third goal for each. O'Dea and Zarb assisted on Blaesser's goal, while Meg MacDonell and Senior Tess Castine assisted on Karabelski's. It was a fitting way to end a festive parent's appreciation night. Blazers Hold Off Rebels!

Posted by Bruce Peck at Feb 21, 2003 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
In one of the worst officiated games of the season, Ladywood defeated the Rebels in Port Huron by a score of 7-6. Ladywood struck first with a goal by senior Sara Sharp. Assisting on the play was junior Mary Beth O'Dea and senior Tess Castine. The Blazers scored the next goal on a shot by senior Katie Karabelski with an assist from junior Jenna Keenan. The Rebels scored the next goal, but the Blazers responded with a goal by senior Meg MacDonell with an assist from Karabelski. Port Huron scored the next goal to end the period. Scoring in the second period went back and forth. Junior Molly Zarb, junior Jess Blaesser, and Sharp scored for the Blazers. Picking up assists were O'Dea, Castine, and Karabelski. In the third period the game really got interesting. The Rebels scored first during one of Ladywood's six penalties of the period. Meg MacDonell responded to put the Blazers back up by two. MacDonell's goal came about 30 seconds after Sharp received a coincidental penalty with a Rebel player. However, the timer never started the clock, so it was officially recorded as 1 second after Sharp's penalty. When the Coach Peck asked the ref to check into the time he refused. The Rebels would come back to score with 1 second left in Sharp's penalty. With Ladywood clinging to a one goal lead, a Rebel player went stick first into goalie Molly Sharp after the whistle. This caused Ladywood to move her out of the way. The ref gave the penalty to Ladywood and then gave captain Katie Karabelski a 10 minute misconduct for inquiring about the call. No explanation was given by the ref on the misconduct. So, with 2:50 left in the game, and Ladywood up by one, they had to kill another penalty. Molly Zarb then stole the puck and skated up the ice. As she got to the red line, she wass tripped from the side and the puck wnet to the Rebel player. No penalty was called, and as Coach Peck questioned the call, he was given a bench minor by one ref and asked to leave by the other ref. This left Ladywood two players down with 1:41 to play. The inspired Blazers team didn't allow a shot on net while playing 6 on 3. Despite the poor offciating, and absence of junior Joy Troczynski (home sick), the Blazers united together for a big victory. (Penalty time in the game was Ladywood 22 minutes and Port Huron 4 minutes)

Blazers Lose Battle To GPS!

The Blazers played hard but lost for the second time to rival Grosse Pointe South. The final score was 4-2 and the second period was once again the Blazer's downfall. Senior Sara Sharp began the scoring for Ladywood with and assist from junior Mary Beth O'Dea. South then put in two goals before the period ended for a 2-1 lead. Penalties in the second period were costly for the Blazers. Four penalties in the period and one 5-3 situation took its toll. It was a great team effort that killed off the penalties, but it left the Blazers worn out as South was able to score twice before the period ended. Ladywood played inspired hockey in the third and junior Mary Beth O'Dea managed to get one goal to narrow the gap, but the game would end with a hard fought 4-2 defeat.
