2004 SUMMER RECAPS

During the summer of 2004 Atkinson played a very competitive schedule that included the varsities from Cook County, Vidalia, Coffee County, Brooks County, Jeff Davis County, Toombs County, Fitzgerald, Brantley County, Pierce County, and Tift Area in addition to the JV squads from Coffee County and Ware County. Below are some of the game summaries. ATKINSON SPLITS WITH COFFEE (May 31) Atkinson split a doubleheader with Coffee County JV and Varsity on Monday in Douglas. The Rebels won the first game 6-5. Zack Harper was 2-3 while Jonathon Guthrie, Ryan Mason, Colt Day, and Clint Sheffield each collected 1 hit. Colt Day hit a long homerun over the wall in left-center to score the first run for Atkinson. Cam Newmans, Keegan Wilkinson, Colt Day, and Jonathon Guthrie all pitched in game 1. The Trojans won the second game. Ryan Mason doubled and scored Atkinson's only run. Justin McClellan and Keegan Wilkinson both pitched in game 2. Congratulations to Cam Newmans and Jonathon Guthrie for being selected to play American Legion ball this summer. Both youngmen missed game 2 to attend American Legion practice and will play with Atkinson as their legion schedule permits. ATKINSON SPLITS WITH BRANTLEY (June 1) Atkinson split a doubleheader with Brantley County Tuesday at South Georgia College. Brantley won the first game 7-0 and Atkinson won the second game 4-3. Ryan Mason, Jake Relihan, Lee Chancey, and Colt Day pitched for Atkinson. ATKINSON SWEEPS BROOKS (June 3) Atkinson won a pair of summer games against Brooks at South Georgia College Thursday. Colt Day allowed only 2 hits in a 7-1 victory in game 1. Lee Chancey picked up the 11-7 win in game 2. Colt Day and Jake Relihan each big hits on the day for the Rebels. COFFEE SUMMER SHOOTOUT (June 10-12) THURSDAY Atkinson lost 6-4 to Vidalia Baseball Academy and 4-2 to Toombs County #1. The Vidalia Baseball Acamedy is Coach by former college national champion head coach Mike Robbins and featured 4 graduated seniors who have signed college scholarships. Ryan Mason pitched well in the loss and Atkinson was led by Jonathon Guthrie, Cam Newmans, and Justin McClellan at the plate. Jonathon Guthrie took the loss to Toombs County #1. Cam Newmans (3-3), Ryan Mason, Jake Relihan, and Garrett White led Atkinson at the plate. FRIDAY Atkinson defeated Pierce County's varsity 8-4 and lost to Fitzgerald's varsity 6-4. Justin McClellan picked up the complete game win against Pierce while Lee Chancey took the loss to Fitzgerald. Colt Day pitched well versus the Hurrucanes and left the game tied 3-3 after 6 complete innings. SATURDAY The Rebels beat Tift Area 14-6 in more tournament action. Atkinson jumped out to a 12-0 lead after 3 innings and emptied the bench. ATKINSON'S 8TH & 9TH GRADERS BEAT COFFEE'S 14U (June 14) Atkinson's 8th and 9th graders beat Coffee's 14U All-Star team 11-1 Monday behind the pitching of upcoming 8th grader Justin Heath. More highlights will be posted soon. Atkinson's older group was rained-out against Ware Magnet and the younger group was rained-out against Coffee JV on June 15 and 16 respectively. The games have not been rescheduled. Ware Magnet is having a good summer while Coffee's JV had several key injuries since the opening week and has lost 12 of 13 games. Also, Rebels Jonathon Guthrie and Cam Newmans continue to start and perform well for their American Legion team. ATKINSON FALLS TO COOK (June 21) Atkinson lost a 9 inning game at Cook County Monday. Atkinson used 5 pitchers on 2 inning limits. The Rebels were led at the plate by Jonathon Guthrie and Cam Newmans. Guthrie was 2-3 with a 2 run HR and Newmans was 2-4 with a solo HR. Ryan Mason, Garrett White, and Clint Sheffield each also had hits in the game. LOWNDES SUMMER DIAMOND BRAWL (June 24-26) THURSDAY Atkinson defeated Brooks County in Quitman 13-3 in 4 innings. Jake Relihan took the complete game victory on the mound. Lee Chancey led at the plate with 2 doubles. Guthrie, Mason, Day, White, and Wilkinson also had hits. FRIDAY Atkinson defeated Ware County JV 5-2 at Valwood. Colt Day picked up the complete game win on the mound. Newmans, Guthrie, Day, Wilkinson, and Sheffield led the Rebels at the plate. ATKINSON WINS 2 @BROOKS (June 29) Atkinson swept a doubleheader at Brooks County Tuesday. Justin McClellan and Jake Relihan picked up the wins. Relihan pitched very well in his complete game victory. With the high school's #1, 2, & 3 starters returning next season and the expected return of Clement from injury it is good to see the rest of the pitching staff doing well and getting experience. At the plate Justin McClellan, Colt Day, Lee Chancey, and Andrew Taft had big hits on the day. In other action, Jonathon Guthrie tripled as his legion team won at Albany on Sunday afternoon. Cam Newmans was on vaction and did not play any baseball Saturday or Sunday. The team split Tuesday in Macon. Cam Newmans picked up the win in the game he pitched. Guthrie had 3 hits and Newmans had 4 hits on the day.image

GUTHRIE AND NEWMANS SELECTED FOR LEGION

Congratulations to Cam Newmans and Jonathon Guthrie for being selected to play American Legion ball this summer. Both youngmen are very deserving of the honor. Newmans has been named the Region 1A Defensive Player of the Year and 1st Team All-Region for 2 consecutive years. Guthrie was named 1st Team All-Region in 2003 and Honorable Mention All-Region in 2004. They will miss most of Atkinson's summer league games to attend American Legion practices and games, but will play with Atkinson as their legion schedule permits.image

2004 ALL-REGION REBELS

Cam Newmans was named the 2004 Region 1A Defensive Player of the Year for a second consecutive season. Ricardo Rowles was named the 2004 Region 1A Offensive Player of the Year. Rebels Antonio Lott, Ryan Mason, Newmans, and Rowles were named 1st Team All-Region 1A while Jonathon Guthrie and Justin McClellan received recognition as Honorable Mentions.imageimage

2004 VARSITY REBELS FINISH AT 20-9

The Atkinson County Rebels finished the season at 20-9 overall. The Rebels had 4 players named 1st team All-Region 1A and 2 named Honorable Mention (Click HERE to see the complete All-Region Team). During the season this young Rebel team was ranked as high as #2 in the GABASEBALL.net poll and #3 in the Georgia Dugout Club poll. ATCO only lost 1 game to a team that did not make the 2004 playoffs (March 5, @Berrien 3-1). ATCO's 2004 regular season schedule included 8 2004 playoff teams. The Class of 2004, like the Class of 2003, reached the playoffs every baseball season while attending ATCO. Click "VARSITY RECAPS" on the left for game summaries.image
