Westerly wins slugfest over WWCM, 17-16!

Playing in one of the hottest days of the summer last Saturday (6-25), Westerly defeated the West Warwick Connie Mack team in a slugfest, 17-16.

The game, which featured a combined 33 runs on 24 hits and 16 free passes, was actually tied at 4-4 after five innings before the tempature and teams heated up for 25 runs in the final two innings.

Both Luke McAllister (Westerly) and Josh Pedus (West Warwick) both it grand slams for their respective teams in the seventh inning. McAllister’s blast provided the Bulldogs what looked like a 17-6 cushion in the top of the seventh inning, while Pedus’ blast cut the lead to 17-16 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Dean Pons Jr., the Division II Cy-Young Award winner and All-State candidate, ended any more threat by striking out the last batter of the game to preserve the one-run victory.

Offensively, West Warwick received hits from Quinn Kortick (2/4, one run and one rbi), Josh Pedus (1/3, one home run, three runs and four rbi’s), Nathan Hunt (2/5, one double, two runs and three rbi’s), Zack Lawrence (2/3, two runs and one rbi), Karl Swanston (1/3, two runs), Dylan Provoyeur (1/1, one run scored) and Camden Diffley (1/3, one run and one rbi).

For Westerly, they received solid games from Pons (1/4, one run and three rbi’s), Burdick (1/2, one double and four runs), Tria (2/4, one run and one rbi), Garbriele (2/5, one run and two rbi’s), Fernando (1/4, two runs and one rbi), Pearson (2/4, two runs and one rbi) and McAllister (2/4, one home run, two runs and five rbi’s).
