Recreation Softball Program

The MSO Recreation (Rec) Softball program is open to all girls from Kindergarten to 8th Grade who live in either Maplewood or South Orange.  Any girl who is interested in softball can participate in the Rec program – there are no tryouts.

The MSO Recreation Softball program spans the first half of the year beginning with registration in late-January and early-February.  For the older divisions, March brings the player evaluations (to ensure fair, competitively balanced teams) followed by the draft.  The Rec season kicks off in April and games continue through early-June culminating with the All-Star Game and playoffs on Softball Weekend!

More detailed information can be found on the following pages within the MSO Softball website:

Divisions - A description of the Rec program divisions including high-level structure, rules and goals of each division.

Teams - A listing of all the teams in the Rec program.  Teams are organized by Division.  Rosters and player names are NOT included at this time.

Schedules  - Detailed schedules for the teams in all of the Rec divisions.  Schedules include dates, times, locations and opponents.  Check here often to see any updates to your team’s schedule.

Standings - Up-to-date information on the team standings in each of the competitive Rec divisions.  Standings are not kept for the younger divisions which are more focused on player instruction, skill development and having fun.

All-Star Game - Information on the All-Star Game which kicks off Softball Weekend.  The All-Star Game not only honors the Rec program players but is also an annual charitable event for MSO Softball.

Softball Weekend - Information on Softball Weekend which is the culmination of the Rec season and which has become an annual event for not only MSO Softball but also for the community at large.

Also, be sure to come back often to check the Calendar for important dates as well as the MSO Softball News page for information on upcoming events.

What is the difference between the Villagers Softball program and the Recreation Softball program?

The Recreation Softball program is open to all children, regardless of ability.  The focus of the Recreation Softball program is on teaching players the game of softball and having fun.

Teams for the Villagers Softball program are selected during competitive tryouts.  Players are expected to have an above average level of proficiency in order to participate and not all players who tryout will make the teams.  All games are played to win and playing time is solely at the discretion of the coach based on a player’s ability, attitude, attendance and game conditions.
