Cunningham Propels 12U Hustlers Past Raiders

Posted by Wayne Main at Apr 27, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The 12U Frederick Hustlers put together their best all-around performance of the young season and beat a solid HCYP Raiders Blue team out of Howard County 4-0 on a cool Wednesday evening at the ballpark. Nick DeLisi, Luke Schlimm and Tyler Prather split the pitching duties for the Hustlers and all were superb. The right-left-right combination held the Raiders to four hits. The Hustlers meanwhile had their work cut out as they faced two hard throwing arms in lefty Evan Marcinko and righty Ripken Reese. JT Sachar got things going in the bottom of the first when he worked a walk and ended up scoring on a passed ball. The Hustlers tacked on two more in the fourth when Gabe Torres led off with a missile to right center for a single and Matt Cunningham followed with a long two-run bomb to left. The Hustlers picked up their final run in the fifth when Prather and Cunningham each singled. On the defensive side, the Hustlers turned to their trademark play. Cunningham showed why he's one of the best middle infielders around as he turned in three beautiful plays at short. Dustin Isanogle was spectacular behind the plate and Schlimm threw a bullet from CF to the plate in the fourth to squelch a Raider rally. The Hustlers finished the game with eight hits. Cunningham had two and DeLisi, Prather, Torres, Ryan Talbert, Isanogle, and Ryan Bennett each had one. Talbert reached safely all three at bats and Sachar reached safely twice.

The Hustlers head to Aberdeen, MD this weekend for the Ripken Gold Glove Tournament.

12U Hustlers Stumble in Game Two

Posted by Wayne Main at Apr 24, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The 12U Frederick Hustlers continued to master their Sunday Jekyll and Hyde act pounding Backyard University 20-7 in the opener and losing 2-0 to Gambrills in the nightcap. The boys from Frederick recorded 16 hits in game one and kept the pedal to the floor scoring in all five innings. Tyler Prather had four hits, and JT Sachar and Nick DeLisi each had three in a game shortened by the run-rule. Dustin Isanogle and Luke Schlimm each chipped in with two. Ryan Talbert, Schlimm and Jake Sherdel each doubled. Gambrill’s Eddie Sargent had other ideas in game two. Sargent, playing more like a General, limited the Hustlers to three hits – two by Sachar and one by Ryan Bennett. The Hustlers only struck out twice but simply couldn’t get anything going against a quality arm. Nick DeLisi worked the first four innings and was the hard luck loser. DeLisi walked the first two batters of the game and gave up a single to Daray Murdock and that was the difference. DeLisi only surrendered three hits in four innings and struck out six. Luke Schlimm worked a perfect 5th and 6th to give the Hustlers a chance. The Hustlers got runners on 2nd and 3rd in the bottom of the 6th and it looked like there would be some Hustler magic. Sargent induced a groundout to 3rd to record a complete game shutout. The Hustlers JT Sachar had an impressive day going 5-6 with two walks and four runs.

The Hustlers play host to the HCYP Raiders on Wednesday before heading to Ripken in Aberdeen on the weekend for the Gold Glove Classic.

Prather, Sherdel Power 12U Hustlers

Posted by Wayne Main at Apr 14, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Tyler “T” Prather and Jake “The Snake” Sherdel played long ball, and Nick DeLisi was spectacular on the mound as the Hustlers throttled the Maryland Warriors 10-5 on a warm and comfortable night at the ballpark. DeLisi worked three solid innings and allowed his offense to go to work. The Hustlers leadoff man Josh “JT” Sachar found his groove and got the black and gold going in the first with a double to left center. DeLisi followed with a single before Prather unleashed a three-run bomb to straight away center. The home team tacked on two more in the second when Luke Schlimm walked before Sherdel ripped a two run shot over the fence in left field. The Hustlers never looked back. The Hustlers added four more in the fifth as Sachar drew a leadoff walk, and Prather, Matt Cunningham and Gabe Torres followed with RBI singles. Ryan Talbert closed out the scoring with a scorching two-run line drive off the fence in left center. DeLisi finished the game with two hits including a double, and Prather was 2-2 with a homerun, SAC fly and five RBIs. DeLisi tossed three innings allowing one earned run on a scratch single with four strikeouts. Cunningham worked the 4th and 5th and was effective limiting the Warriors to just one run. Sachar worked the 6th and Talbert the 7th as the Hustlers ran their CRAB League record to 4-1.

The Hustlers are scheduled for two games on Sunday at Yellow Springs against Hickory and Catoctin. Game one is slated to begin at noon.

The 12U Frederick Hustlers opened their 2016 campaign in grand fashion, beating a solid Backyard University Gamer squad out of York, PA by scores of 4-0 and 12-4. Pitching ruled this cold day at the park as Nick DeLisi, Luke Schlimm, Matt Cunningham and Jake Sherdel all pitched well. DeLisi was particularly sharp in the opener tossing four shutout innings with eight strikeouts. Schlimm closed out game one in equally dominant form striking out four in two innings and worked the first two innings of game two and only allowed one run with two strikeouts. Cunningham pitched the middle three innings of game two allowing two runs in his first inning before settling down and tossing two shutout innings. Sherdel closed out the game giving up one run and benefiting from a beautiful double-play by 2B Andrew McElwain.

The Hustler bats were hot on this chilly day, producing six hits in game one and eleven in game two. New addition Gabe Torres got things started in game one with a run-scoring single to left followed by Ryan Bennett’s RBI liner to right. JT Sachar led off the third with a sharp single to left center and was brought home with a laced RBI double by DeLisi to the gap in right center. Torres drew a walk to start the fourth and was eventually driven home by Ryan Talbert. The Hustlers exploded for 12 runs in the nightcap with Sachar, Cunningham, Tyler Prather, Talbert and Schlimm each accounting for two. Schlimm and Bennett each had three hits; one of Schlimm's was a double. DeLisi had two doubles and three RBIs. On the day, Bennett was 5-6 with four RBIs, DeLisi was 3-6 with three doubles and four RBIs, and Schlimm was 3-5 with three RBIs.

The Hustlers are back in action on Sunday, April 10 at Yellow Springs where they play host to Gambrills High Heat and the BCC Big Train in round-robin action. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30pm.

The 10U Frederick Hustlers got their season underway on Saturday, April 2nd, playing in the Long Horn tournament in Leesburg, Virginia. The first game had the Hustlers paired up with PG Select Blue Sox. Ryan Jones pitched a scoreless 1st, and the Hustlers quickly put two on the board in the bottom of the first as Camren Baker and Jones scored. PG Select tied the game in the second, and went ahead in the top of the 3rd by a run. But the Hustlers responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the third and held on to win a tight 5-4 victory. Jones pitched the first two innings, while Mason Miller pitched the middle inning, and Landon Johnson came on in the last two innings to shutdown PG Select. Each of them pitched well. This game was about pitching and defense, as each team only had four hits. The young hustlers committed only one error in the game. Baker, Jones, Miller, and Landon Johnson each had one hit for the Hustlers.

The second game had the Hustlers facing the Potomac Riverdogs. The Riverdogs scored 5 runs in the first 3 innings, but could not keep up with the hot Hustler bats, as the Hustlers plated 3 in the first, 4 in the second, and 4 more in the 3rd. The game was called after 4 innings due to the time limit, and the Hustlers came away with a 12-5 victory. Brett Lucas led the way with 2 doubles, one which was a monster shot to right center that bounced off the top of the fence and back into the field of play. Mason Miller and Jaxson Wood each hit long doubles in the game also. Camren Baker, Ryan Jones, Connor Allen, Miller, Landon Johnson, Logan Malachowski, Landon Tolbert, and Wood each had 1 hit. Tyler Schroyer pitched the first two innings, and Brett Lucas pitched the last two innings in the win.

Unfortunately the tournament was canceled Sunday due to the weather. The Hustlers are back in action next weekend, starting CRAB league play
