Description: Travis Sampson, Wickford 1’s starting pitcher, held Wickford 2 batters hitless through 2 innings, striking out five and allowing only one base runner (a walk). Wickford 1’s bats came alive early as they scored three runs in the first inning and four runs before recording an out in the second inning.   There were several big hits that contributed to this rally:  Jimmy Moan’s single and RBI double, Mark Rogers’ RBI double, Tyler Chabot’s RBI double, A Jay Bucci’s single, Dallin Smith’s single, and Travis Sampson’s RBI single.   Patrick Maybach came on in relief with no outs in the second inning to minimize the damage.  He gave up one run (a homerun to Alec Bedard) but struck out the side to end the second.   Wickford 2 rallied in the top half of the third inning.  Nathan Mathews recorded the first hit, a double to right, and both Patrick Maybach and Vinnie Thela drew bases-loaded RBI walks.  A Jay Bucci came on in relief and got a strike out with the bases loaded to kill the rally.   Wickford 1 added a run in the bottom of the third on an A Jay Bucci solo home run.  Patrick Maybach recorded two more strike outs and a 1-3 groundout to get out of the inning.   Wickford 2 scored two in the top of the fourth inning on a Matthew Viens’ single and Nick Gartland’s RBI double.  Nick Gartland also scored when he stole home.    Wickford 1 finished the scoring by putting up four in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Key hits in this inning were Travis Sampson’s single, Jimmy Moan’s single and Alec Bedard’s three run home run, his second homer of the game.   The game was called at the end of the fourth because of rain.

This was the last game in the pool play portion of the tournament for both teams.  Wickford 1 finished at 7-0 and Wickford 2 finished at 4-2-1.  The playoffs begin for both teams next week.   As the top seed, Wickford 1 will host Exeter-West Greenwich on Monday, 3 August at 5 PM.  Wickford 2’s seeding is still TBD.  They will play on Tuesday, 4 August, though the game time and opponent is still TBD.   All games will be played at Sprague Field in Narragansett.

Description: The Wickford bats came alive early.  Wickford scored four runs in the first inning (Vinnie Thela, Matthew Viens, Johnny Kearns, and Nick Gartland) and two runs in the second (Patrick Maybach and Vinnie Thela).  These innings were fueled by bits hits from Kyle Holland (2-RBI single), Kris Richard (RBI single) and Stephen Maybach (double).   The Wickford bats remained quiet in the middle innings and Narragansett fought back.  Gutsy pitching by starter Stephen Maybach and reliever Nick Gartland and some big defensive plays, especially by Brandon Jackman at second base and Nathan Mathews at shortstop, minimized the damage and helped Wickford maintain the lead. In the middle of the fifth inning, Wickford had a slim 6-5 lead.   Wickford got three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth (Stephen Maybach, Anthony Caranci and Patrick Maybach).  Big hits in this inning were Patrick Maybach’s RBI single and Vinnie Thela’s RBI ground out to the right side of the infield.   Nick Gartland got the first two outs in the top of the sixth before hitting his pitch count.  Zach Lynch struck out the only batter he faced to secure the win.

With the win, Wickford improved to 4-1-1 in pool play.  Their next game is Friday night, 31 July at 7 PM.  They will play Wickford 1 at Sprague Field in Narragansett.

Wickford won the District 3 championship with a great come-from-behind victory by defeating Warwick American 8-7 at home on Monday 27 July 2009.Liam Darcy started the game and did a great job by throwing strikes but the Warwick team, with a great offense capability, quickly went up 6-0 after 2 innings by hitting 3 HR's including a grand slam.  Liam didn't get rattled, settled down, and continued to pitch into the 5th inning allowing no more runs.  Wickford could have folded the tent and gone home but the battle mentality took over and the whole team did the little things it takes, both offense and defense, to tie it, and eventually win the game in the bottom of the 7th.  Dean Streich pitched the 5th inning and Cody Tompkins did a great job by closing the scoreless 6th and 7th innings.

Brian Farrell had a great at bat in the 5th inning by hitting a single and having 3 RBI's.  Chris Guenev had a phenomenal night by going 3-4 with 3 RBI's and in the 7th inning he stole 3rd with 2 outs and scored the winning run on a pass ball.

The team advances to the first game of state tourney play on Sunday being hosted by North Providence.
