News and Announcements

We are part of the largest high school conference in the world. The Sophomore-Freshman City Championship series is designed to determine a champion, and there is an emphasis on competition as opposed to participation. Each school is allowed two entries per event, and one relay. All Chicago Public schools enter their best athletes.

Northside College Prep will disclose their entries at practice on Monday, April 25, 2011 and then submit them to the CPS Sports Administration.

The qualifying meet will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2011. Finals will take place on Friday, May 6, 2011 at Hanson Stadium.

What if I didn't make the Sophomore-Freshman TEAM for the Chicago Public League Championships?

-Track & Field Season will end for Freshman and Sophomore athletes that didn't make our CPS Sophomore-Freshman Championship roster. Banquet information will be provided. The coaching staff will also provide training tips that will help you make the post-season roster next year. The key to making the roster is good attendance at practices, and meets, and following off-season training programs. A Cross Country Parent and Athlete Information Meeting and Pasta Party will take place on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at 6 pm in the Northside Cafeteria. Our Top four athletes in Varsity Points scored this season, Josh Williams, Mac Melto, Wesley Laytham, and Nathaniel Agharese ALL ran Cross Country as part of their preperation for Track & Field Season. Josh Williams only scored one Varsity point his Freshman year, and now leads the TEAM. We can't stress enough the benefits of running Cross Country for Track & Field athletes. Uniforms need to be returned prior to June 3, 2011. Thanks.

Does the season end after CPS Sophomore-Freshman Championships?

-NO. Many athletes from our Sophomore-Freshman TEAM will be selected for the VARSITY IHSA Sectional Championships, based on their performances in the Chicago Public League ChampionshipsFriendly reminder, don't listen to anyone that tells you that you won't make the Varsity IHSA Sectional Championship Roster, until you hear it from the Head Coach. Thanks.

Can a Sophomore or Freshman Athlete make the Varsity TEAM for Chicago Public League Championships?

-Yes. If a Sophomore or Freshman athlete has run a time or hit a mark that qualified for Varsity Chicago Public League finals in 2010, they will be competing in the Varsity division instead of the Sophomore-Freshman division.

On Tuesday, April 19, 2011, the Northside Men's Track & Field Team had their second spring break practice at Northside College Prep at 3:45 pm.

After a TEAM warm-up, and extensive stretching, the Northside distance runners were lead by Freshman phenoms Cesar Rufino and Alex Gordon, on a run from Northside College Prep to IHOP for Dinner.

Athletes favorites included Chicken, Waffles, Cheeseburgers, and Chocolate Chip Pancakes. All of the athletes were able to finish their plates, which proved they trained hard enough today in preperation for the Lake Forest Caxys Invitational. All expenses were 100% paid by Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon.

The Northside Varsity Men and Sophomore-Freshman Boys Track Team will depart for Lake Forest Academy on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 2:30 pm.

A Team/Parent Tailgate Party will take place at the conclusion of the Lake Forest Caxys Invitational.

On Monday, April 18, 2011, Spring Break Track & Field Practices commenced at Northside College Prep. Spring Break practices are an important part of the Northside Track & Field Team culture and vital to success at the upcoming Chicago Public League Championships and IHSA Sectional Championships.

Athletes that miss spring break meets, will find themselves in a difficult situation, because they will have gone from April 12, 2011 to April 29, 2011, without racing for a period of 17 days. This puts sprinters, especially, at a major disadvantage.

The April 20, 2011, Lake Forest Academy Caxys Invitational will also determine the Mustangs final entries for the Varsity Spartan Relays against York High School, among others, on April 29, 2011, and the Sophomore-Freshman Chicago Public League Championships on April 30, 2011.

Northside Sprints Coach Kwaku Attoh had an impressive practice with the Northside sprinters on Monday. Northside Jumps Coach Adrian Hunter had an equally outstanding practice with the jumpers. Northside Distance runners ran very impressive repeats at River Park Track. The Northside throwers put an extra time after practice in the Northside weight room.

Northside Jumper and Sprinter Josh Williams showed his loyalty to the coaching staff and his teammates by flying back from Florida for the Lake Forest Academy Caxys Invitational, which will takes place on Wednesday, April 20, 2011.

Lake Forest Academy features a multi-million dollar track, hockey rink, and extensive athletic facilities. The campus is surrounded by woods, complete with running trails. All Lake Forest Academy students are required to compete in Track and one other sport as a graduation requirement. Lake Forest Academy has multiple athletes and relays in every event.

Across from their Track & Field Stadium, the Chicago Bears Indoor Practice facility can be seen behind the Track & Field stadium score board.

Host Lake Forest Academy has very impressive sprinters, including a 10.90 in the 100m dash this season. The Caxys also have strong milers, and will be a good challenge for the Mustangs.

On Friday, April 15, 2011, Northside Senior Wesley Laytham traveled to NCAA Division I Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina for a recruiting visit. Laytham will be staying with Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field 800m Champion, Andrew Lantz during his visit to Davidson College.

Northside Junior Mac Melto is visiting NCAA Division I Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, April 15, 2011, and Saturday, April 16, 2011. Northeastern University's Track & Field schedule includes the Harvard Invitational, Yale Invitational, and Duke Invitational. Melto has also visited Indiana University this season.

Wesley Laytham and Mac Melto will both be back in time for the Lake Forest Academy Caxys Invitational on Wednesday, April 20, 2011.

The Northside Track & Field Team and Parents will be having a TAILGATE PARTY at a new location this year, at Lake Forest Academy, 1500 W. Kennedy Road, in Lake Forest, Illinois. The Tailgate Party will take place at the LAKE FOREST ACADEMY CAXYS INVITATIONAL on Wednesday, April 20, 2011!

The Tailgate party provided by the Northside Parents in 2010 was second to none. It was a special experience for all of the athletes, parents, coaching staff, and guests. We need your help again to make this event a success in 2011. If you could bring any kind of finger food, drinks, paper ware, plastic ware, let Coach Gordon know and he will post a list of items being brought to the Tailgate Party on our Team website.

April 20, 2011 - Tailgate Party - List of Items
