Questions and Answers about Sophomore-Freshman Chicago Public League Championships

Posted by Jon Gordon on Apr 19 2011 at 05:00PM PDT

We are part of the largest high school conference in the world. The Sophomore-Freshman City Championship series is designed to determine a champion, and there is an emphasis on competition as opposed to participation. Each school is allowed two entries per event, and one relay. All Chicago Public schools enter their best athletes.

Northside College Prep will disclose their entries at practice on Monday, April 25, 2011 and then submit them to the CPS Sports Administration.

The qualifying meet will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2011. Finals will take place on Friday, May 6, 2011 at Hanson Stadium.

What if I didn't make the Sophomore-Freshman TEAM for the Chicago Public League Championships?

-Track & Field Season will end for Freshman and Sophomore athletes that didn't make our CPS Sophomore-Freshman Championship roster. Banquet information will be provided. The coaching staff will also provide training tips that will help you make the post-season roster next year. The key to making the roster is good attendance at practices, and meets, and following off-season training programs. A Cross Country Parent and Athlete Information Meeting and Pasta Party will take place on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at 6 pm in the Northside Cafeteria. Our Top four athletes in Varsity Points scored this season, Josh Williams, Mac Melto, Wesley Laytham, and Nathaniel Agharese ALL ran Cross Country as part of their preperation for Track & Field Season. Josh Williams only scored one Varsity point his Freshman year, and now leads the TEAM. We can't stress enough the benefits of running Cross Country for Track & Field athletes. Uniforms need to be returned prior to June 3, 2011. Thanks.

Does the season end after CPS Sophomore-Freshman Championships?

-NO. Many athletes from our Sophomore-Freshman TEAM will be selected for the VARSITY IHSA Sectional Championships, based on their performances in the Chicago Public League ChampionshipsFriendly reminder, don't listen to anyone that tells you that you won't make the Varsity IHSA Sectional Championship Roster, until you hear it from the Head Coach. Thanks.

Can a Sophomore or Freshman Athlete make the Varsity TEAM for Chicago Public League Championships?

-Yes. If a Sophomore or Freshman athlete has run a time or hit a mark that qualified for Varsity Chicago Public League finals in 2010, they will be competing in the Varsity division instead of the Sophomore-Freshman division.
