First Tri Valley Harrier Classic is history!
Despite a steady rain the entire day before, the first Tri Valley Harrier Classic - hosted by Amador Valley, Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley - was greeted with sunshine, mild temperatures and great racing action at Shadow Cliffs Park! Eight teams, one as far away as Fresno, faced off in grade division races over the three mile varsity course. Yes that's right - ALL participants raced the full three miles - many for the first time. While some Stangs had a touch of 'nerves' before their races, all toed the line and once the gun went off, handled the three mile course like pros! That's what happens when you've put in all that hard work.
Senior Chloe Wood ran away with the Girls Jr/Sr race, taking first place with a fantastic 19:43.5 clocking!
No team scores were formally kept, although Mr Huntsman's computer tallied the scores "as if". And the Mustangs performed very well on the day. Meet t-shirts were given like medals to the top 20 in each race, and MV grabbed their fair share. A list of shirt winners:
Girls Frosh/Soph Race: Nicole Aha, Anna Hoyt, Kimmy Abood and Kelly Peterson.
Boys Frosh/Soph Race: Amis Matulionis, Josh Smiley, Jake Erlick, Kevin Ho and Zach Chambers.
Girls Juniors/Seniors Race: Chloe Wood, Brett Zorich, Kaitlin Kelly, Renee Lau, Lauren Ho, Kim Chin, Alex D'Souza, Kirsten Ratliff and Taysa Bowers (wow - nearly 1/2 of the shirts in this race!)
Boys Jrs and Srs Race: Bhavik Kanzaria, Dustin Harris, Mike Roderick (3rd, 4th and 5th!), Clinton McAdams, Connor Donley and Alex Morris.
It's the Vista Grande Carnival!
Right after the Tri Valley Invitational, Coach Austin headed over to the greatest elementary school carnival in the tri-state area! Ok, I'm not even sure what the tri-state area is... but this carnival has to rank among the finest anywhere. Live bands pounded out the tunes, while games of all kinds were being contested in the outdoor areas of the school. Coach Davis dropped in to say hello, and found several MVXC members taking on 3rd graders in tests of skill and daring. Having cleaned up in the always difficult "cake walk"... Brett Zorich, Danny Bartz, Mike Slap and Lisa Wulf took on the locals in a free for all cake eating contest. The starting whistle went off, and all heads dropped into the dishes of white or chocolate cake. Pre-contest favorite Danny Bartz looked to be a shoe-in for the victory, but suddenly, the local elementary student stood up in the classic 'victory' poise - having dispatched the larger, hungrier but obviously overmatched high school students.
If you didn't attend - and Coach Austin knows who you are - make this a must on next years social calendar.

Kislyuk emerges to top field |

PLEASANTON — It took all three miles at the East Bay Athletic League center meet in Shadow Cliffs Park to decide a winner.
It was anyone's race at the start Wednesday afternoon, but it soon became clear only three runners would be fighting for first. Dmitry Kislyuk of California, Shawn Daut of Amador Valley and Keir Forster of San Ramon Valley exchange places in the lead five times during the race and all finished with personal bests at Shadow Cliffs. Kislyuk came out of the pack to finish first in a time of 15 minutes, 29.98 seconds. "Basically, three of us up there leading the last two miles," Kislyuk said. "I knew there was going to be a lot of competition out there." Coming into the race, Amador Valley had the biggest target on its back by virtue of its first-place finish at the Stanford Invitational last weekend in the Division 1 race. After beating the field in Stanford, the Dons kept their winning streak in Pleasanton with a first-place finish at the center meet. "Definitely less stress here," Daut said, comparing the center meet to Stanford. "It's nice to run a small race, more room to jostle at the start." Finishing behind Amador Valley in the team races were Monte Vista (5-1) and San Ramon Valley (4-2). Girls cross country PLEASANTON — It's becoming a way of life now for Diana George of Livermore High, run an EBAL center meet and get a win. George competed in her fourth EBAL center meet on Wednesday and came out with her fourth EBAL center meet victory with a time of 17:43.58. The victory didn't come easy for George this time around after struggling early in the race. "I got to the first mile and thought I was going to die," George said. "I went out to fast." Finishing behind George was Colleen Lillig of California with a time of 18:00.40. Lillig set a personal record by 32 seconds, but fell just shy of breaking the 18 minute mark. "Wasn't expecting that good of a time compared to last year," Lillig said. "Would have been awesome to have broken 18 minutes." While George and Lillig were 1-2 in the race, it had no effect on the team standings as Granada won the team competition, sweeping the field with a 6-0 record. Leading the Mats to victory was Lara Jansen, Hayley Swanson and Emily Paddack, all of whom finished in the top 10. Behind the Mats in team records was California High with a 5-1 record and Amador Valley with a 4-2 record. |
It's the 1st EBAL Center Meet!
Results from the EBAL Center Meet #1, held Weds Oct 3rd at Shadow Cliffs Park in Pleasanton.
Highlights:
- JV Girls place two in the top ten (Sr Taysa Bowers 6th, Sr Brittany Randall 10th) to come in 2nd place overall in the unofficial team scoring (just 15 pts from first place SRV). Sophs Katie Swinnerton (13th), Natalie Scott (15th) and Jr Kirsten Ratliff (17th) round out the scorers as the Mustangs show their signature tight packing.
- JV Boys nearly sweep, taking the first four places, and 6 of the top 10! In a hard fought battle down the stretch, Sr Tyler Breen takes individual honors, followed closely by Frosh Josh Smiley (2nd), Jr Taylor Durand (3rd) and Frosh Kevin Ho (4th). Sr Cameron Tremblay-Adams grabs 6th overall to complete the scoring. And as if that wasn't enough, Freshmen Zach Chambers and Derek Giovanetti both finish in the top ten (7th and 9th) to add the finishing touches on a great team performance.
- Varsity Girls end up 3-3 on the day, in the dual meet scoring. They beat the teams from Livermore, San Ramon Valley and Foothill, while dropping close contests to Cal, Granada and Amadaor (by 1 pt). Jr Kaitlin Kelly takes 10th overall, just ahead of teammate Chloe Wood in 11th. Nicole Aha (16th), Renne Lau (19th) and Brett Zorich (21st) account for the rest of the scoring.
Varsity Boys finish at an impressive 5-1 in their EBAL opener. They bettered all EBAL teams except #1 ranked Amador, who had 5 in by the 13th runner! Yet the Mustangs had 5 in by the 18th, with their now signature low gap between #1 and #5 (this time only 19 seconds). Bhavik Kanzaria keeps fighting his way back to the top, taking 8th overall. Harry Nunns (14th), Mike Roderick (15th), Dustin Harris (17th) and Danny Bartz (18th) complete the score.
