2009 Overnight Relay - Results!

Posted by Mike Davis at Oct 17, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

OMG!!!!  Record setting evening as the 2009 team blasts to a huge record performance of 115.8 miles, easily breaking last years record of 112.6 miles!  Great weather, good food, and lots of games highlight a fantastic experience this year.  The team ran an amazing 6:12 team pace!  Lots of 'all-nighters' pulled, without the aid of energy drinks!

The Frosh/Soph team were the envy of hungry upperclassmen as they brought an evening's worth of food fit for royalty!  Coach Sharon coordinated a huge spread of food, complete of course, with (assistant coach) Buzz and his famous Izze's!  By the end of the night, the food was being shared with everyone!  The grill was fired up early and often, keeping the hungry runners fed!

This years event was complete with random water balloon 'attacks' from local delinquents.  Fortunately, Coaches Austin and Davis, armed with maglights and knowledge of the area hills, were able to turn back the attackers and keep the event safe and secure!  Coach Austin spent several hours observing the area from secret spots along the Eliminator.  Remember, he's in this for YOU!

Despite a heavy dew in the morning, the team was able to quickly tear down the event and head home for some much needed sleep.  By 8am, you could not tell that the great event had even happened!

Mile splits were captured by our great volunteer parents, and are shown in the text file below.  Thank you to all the parents who helped out, including the donation of the blinkie lights which made the start/finish line look like an airport runway!

GREAT JOB TEAM!

Class of 2003:

Class of 2002

Class of 2001
Susan Chan  - Graduate of Yale University.
Susan competed for Yale University in track and cross country.  At the time, Yale's women's cross country team was nationally ranked.  In 2003, Susan's 5th place finish at the ECAC Championship race helped Yale win first place:
http://www.yalebulldogs.com/sports/w-xc/recaps/112303aaa.html

Susan held the 1600 and 3200 track records here at Monte Vista from 2000 until 2012.  She led the 2000 team to the XC State Meet and was a four-time individual cross country state meet qualifier (at the time, the first in school history to do so).
She was also an individual qualifier in track.

Susan recently completed her first marathon, finishing 66th overall and 3rd in her age group in the Mystic Country Marathon (East Lyme CT.) Her time of 3:25.58 qualifed Susan for the Boston Marathon, which she plans to run in 2007.

Kristin Schleicher:  Kristin was also a member of the 2000 State Meet team.  After high school, she attended Stanford University.  While she didn't compete for Stanford, she did keep running and was present at several local races over the years.  In 2006, Kristin completed the Boston Marathon, finishing in 3 hours and 34 minutes.  Kristin is now a Graduate student
in Chemistry at MIT.  Maybe she'll run into Matt Beniosek sometime (2005 alumni - above).

Class of 1988

Chris Leavell: Chris has been a regular at the Alumni races, cementing himself in MVXC lore by pushing a baby stroller the entire way in 2010.  Chris only ran cross country for one year at Monte Vista (Fall of 1984), and at UCSB fell in love with cycling where he was part of the team that won a national championship in 1993. He went on to compete as a semi-pro cyclist for 3 years, but running has always been a source of enjoyment and cross training.  His wife, Catherine, is a trail runner and marathoner who "drags" him off the bike quite often, and Chris still competes in the sport of cyclocross which involves occasionally "shouldering" your bike and running it with it.

Class of 1987

Mike Abrams:  Mike was a member of the 1985 XC team (last league title for the boys).  He was a member of the MV track team that won league titles in '84, '86 and '87.  He was All-Conference in the 3000m Steeplechase while attending DVC in 1989.  Mike came out of 'retirement' in 1996 and has been racing strong ever since.  He has raced for the Forward Motion team (1996-98, 2003-2005), Fleet Feet (2006-2008) and now for the Asics Aggies (2009 - ) where he helped their masters team wih the Pacific Association XC championship.  He has twice won the Silicon Valley Maration (2:40.28 PR), and this in 2009 ran a 2:44 at the CIM (California International Marathon).  Mike attended his first alumni race in 2009 AFTER running a 16 distance run, a feat he duplicated again in 2011!
