SOCCER CITY, ETOBICOKE -
On a night where Ouzo's ironman Jesse Geisel ended his consecutive game streak at 4 years, Ouzo gave up a late short-handed goal which resulted in a 3-3 tie with the "Raging Beer Bellies", Soccer City's favourite team.

A short handed Ouzo squad were forced to call up former Ouzo Alumni's Mladen Dikic (1G, 1A) and Lanny Whelan to help out their depleted squad.  Injuries to Mike Michae[lidesMAN] (IL), Jesse "Schnitzel" Geisel (DTD), Colin "wink, wink" Wright (DTD) all picked up injuries and as a result were forced to miss a game against our long time rivals.

Ouzo opened the scoring on an excellent finish off the boards by midfielder Stu Fletcher (2G).   "We've been looking for that all year and we're finally finishing on those chances" said Stu at half time.  Fletcher's 2 goal performance put's him in the overal lead for goals this season, just ahead of Geisel and Anderson (2A).

With under 30 secs. left in the half, Ouzo gave up the lead on a counter-attack goal that left the players scratching their heads going into the break.  After the break, Ouzo gave up another goal to go down 2-1.  With there heads still high, Ouzo pushed on creating more chances as the half went on.  Dikic, who came out of retirement last night, finished his chance off an Anderson free kick to tie the game at 2 a piece.  "With him in the line-up it gives us a different scoring threat" said Wurthman after the game.  Fletcher finished off Ouzo's scoring with a goal off a rebound from one of Dikic's rocket shots.  With several chances to put the game away, Raging Bulls keeper made some excellent saves to keep his team in the game.

Just when Ouzo thought they were on the road to victory, "Doughboy" set up an unknown Bulls player who tied the game with a short-handed goal.   Ouzo's lack of concentration late in the game cost them again.  Something the fans know too much about...

This leaves Ouzo at 2-1-1 for the season with a big game next week versus Mesopotamia (3-0-1).

SOCCER CITY, ETOBICOKE
- Everyone knew that Ouzo and Arnold & Bart were not best of friends. Sunday made it official. In a bitterly contested match, Arnold & Bart (3-0) edged Ouzo (2-1) once again, by a score of 2-1, to take sole possession of first place in the Sunday Soccer City Premier Division. The score was almost an afterthought though, after benches emptied for both squads with 10 minutes to go in the second half.

In an evenly contested first half, A&B managed to capitalize late on the power play, after Ouzo was whistled for too many men, on one of several debatable calls during the course of the match. Just before the half, Mike MichaelidesMAN hurt his knee and had the ladies gasping in despair as he was unavailable for the remainder of the match. His status is uncertain for the next Ouzo match. A&B increased their lead to 2-0 about seven minutes into the second half. A well-timed nudge by an A&B allowed A&B to be sent in on a 2-on-0. A desperate attempt to tackle the ball carrier by Rob Rusnov was not enough as the ball was slipped to the open player who deposited into the yawning cage. A collision at the end of the play between Ouzo goalkeeper Colin Wright and an A&B player ("the blonde guy") set the mood for what would happen next.

With 10 minutes to go in the game, A&B started throwing out elbows like they were Mr. Hockey himself, Gordie Howe. First Gus Polymerus felt the brunt of a well-timed elbow, which should have resulted in an Ouzo free kick and penalty for A&B. Unfortunately the incompetence of the referee resulted in the missed call. As a small gathering was forming on the pitch, another cheap shot by A&B on Stuart "Nature Boy" Fletcher resulted in both benches emptying. There was some pushing and shoving and a lot of tempers and nostrils flaring. Steve "Shirts off for Kiprusoff" Delaney managed to grab two A&B players and pin them against the boards as they whimpered like little schoolgirls. Rest assured they would not be messing with Delaney anymore. To his credit, Delaney also managed to keep his shirt on this time.

After a several minute delay, the game started again, and with about 7 minutes left Behn Wurthman caught the A&B goalie napping with the ball at his feet and managed to poke the ball into the net for a very cheeky goal, to make the score 2-1. Unfortunately that would be all Ouzo would get on the day, as A&B held on for the victory.

"Pleasantries" and "Best Wishes" were exchanged between the two squads in the dressing room area post-match. This sets up an exciting rematch in a few weeks, which has all of Soccer City buzzing.

ANDERSON TAKES MATTERS INTO OWN HANDS

Posted by Rob Anderson at Feb 19, 2006 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Less than a day after celebrating the birth of a brand new baby girl, Rob Anderson let League new comers Lakeshore United know the type of leader and father they were up against with one of the his best performances in an Ouzo jersey. Anderson, a native of Oakville, Ontario and proud new father of Alexa Anderson left his wife’s side to join up with an excited and eager Ouzo squad.

After falling behind 1-0 early on in the game, Ouzo was able to shake off the weak goal and were level midway through the first half. A strong individual performance by feisty work horse Gus Polymerous allowed him to turn just outside the box and fire home his first goal of the new campaign. Polymerous, who finished last session off at the top of his game, continues to show the form that landed him a spot on the Air Canada traveling squad.

Although Ouzo continued to set the pace of the game, it was Lakeshore United who would snag the lead just before the half putting Ouzo behind for the second time in the game. With the score 2-1 Lakeshore United going into the second half, Ouzo would switch the formation, going with only 3 at the back and pushing an extra player into the midfield. The move would prove to have an immediate impact, as a wide pass from Phil Kennedy gave Anderson the room he needed to step by one defender and slot home his first goal of the night, leveling the score 2-2 early into the second half. With time ticking and the pace of the game increasing, Anderson would show exactly why he is considered one of the top players in the league. A well worked movement starting from the back, saw the ball eventually find the left boot of Anderson, who cut sharply across the face of the goal and slammed home his second of the night, giving Ouzo their first lead.

Another strong performance by netminder Colin Wright kept Ouzo’s lead in tact in the later stages of the game. With less than 5 minutes remaining, and Ouzo clinging to a one-goal advantage it was Anderson again who would slip and slide his way through three defenders before finally being hauled down inside the box. Cool and Calm, Anderson would step up and convert the penalty completing the Natural hat-trick and securing Ouzo’s second straight win to start the season. It was a well played game, with another outstanding performance by Ouzo’s defense.

Three times since moving to the top division have Ouzo started the season 2 and 0. This Sunday at 5:45 against Arnold and Bart, Ouzo look to start the season 3 and 0 for the first time and secure sole position of top spot in-doing-so.

GOAL! THE MOVIE

Posted by Rob Anderson at Jan 29, 2006 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

PROJECTED RELEASE DATE IN NORTH AMERICA:
  March 2006

Why has there never been a great football film? The men behind Goal! think they know - and they've made a film with a touching human story using real football as the backdrop.

The cinema has given audiences many inspiring films about sport, from Raging Bull to Seabiscuit through to the current hit Cinderella Man. Goal! producers Mike Jefferies and Matt Barrelle wondered why Hollywood hadn't yet spawned a great football movie. "We've seen a myriad of tremendously successful films that use sport as a backdrop-films about baseball, basketball, golf, you name it-and it just seemed incredible to me that the world's biggest sport has never been the subject of a decent movie," said Jefferies.

The story of Goal! is that of one kid's dream. He's not alone in his fantasies - many kids have posters of the FIFA World Cup on their bedroom walls. But Santiago Munez's quest to fulfill his dream takes him from Mexico to Newcastle - via Los Angeles - and it is in the north east of England where he gets the chance to make his name.

After illegally crossing the Mexican border into America with his family at the age of 10, Santiago is unable to find an outlet for his skills other than playing for a small amateur side. But when ex-English pro Glen Foy (Stephen Dillane) happens to see Santiago at a local match, he recognizes a player with great talent. After failing to get a visiting sports agent to take a look at him, Glen tells Santiago that if he can get himself to England, he'll arrange for a trial with the only club he has a chance with - Newcastle United. One club - one chance.

This is the opportunity he's waited for all of his life. Convincing his father is another story. As an illegal immigrant, if Santiago chooses to make the journey to the UK, he will be turning his back on his family forever as he'll never be able to come back For the screenwriters, the story transcended the football field. "Everybody understands the story of a kid coming from nowhere, dragged out of his environment and being a fish out of water," says Dick Clement. "Everybody understands what is at stake, what Santiago is aiming for." Thrust into a foreign land where football, and in particular Newcastle United, is a religion, the young Latin American must prove that he's got the skill and more importantly the heart to make it as a professional footballer. Muddy fields, cold winds and crunching blows, not conditions he's experienced or is prepared for, it looks like Santiago is destined for a quick exit from England.

Goal! is the story of this young man's fight to prevail against the odds in his own ultimate challenge - to become a Premiership footballer, and eventually join Ouzo F.C after retirement.

Goal! was directed by Danny Cannon of CSI fame and stars Kuno Becker acting alongside some of the biggest footballer in the world including David Beckham, Zinédine Zidane, Raul, and Alan Shearer.
