Aces High: Orioles Go 4-0 On Lyle’s Complete Game Gem

Posted by Michael White on Mar 25 2005 at 04:00PM PST
With games on consecutive days taxing an already limited pitching staff, the Orioles changed strategies Friday night, starting Brett Lyle on the mound against the dangerous Rangers. Lyle, normally accustomed to pitching no more than an inning or two in a closing role, took the hill and never gave it back, throwing 5 magnificent innings and earning the complete game victory. Lyle fanned 10 Rangers and scattered 4 walks, pacing the Birds’ 12-4 victory. Carlos Guzman further inspired the Orioles Friday night, keeping his team in the game with his inspiring hustle and aggressive play. Playing shortstop in the bottom half of the fourth, Guzman knocked down a scorching line drive which otherwise would have resulted in extra bases. Carlos also came through at the plate, notching an RBI on a hard-hit fielder’s choice. Guzman’s dedication and hustle earned him the game ball, undoubtedly the first of many in his promising career.
