Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What days will practices be?
A: We typically practice 1-2 times per week. Practices will be held in Apostles Hall which is shared by other groups. Because of this the days may vary from week to week. We will try to keep the practice schedule updated and posted as much in advance as possible. Practice schedules and time frames may vary based upon age groups but we will do our best to keep everyone updated.

Q: Are the girls allowed to tumble?
A: We follow CYO league rules. Last year some tumbling was allowed and we anticipate some being allowed this year as well. Once the winter season begins and the rules finalized, we will know what is allowed for this year and can share that with all the cheerleaders.

Q: How many squads will there be and how will they be broken up?
A: We will be able to determine this once we have all the registrations in. Sign up soon!! We hope to have a lot of cheerleaders and a lot of fun!

Q: When will games be?
A: We will be cheering for the St. Peter basketball teams. Games are typically on Saturdays or Sundays (and anything else you want to add).

Q: How many hours per week will the cheerleaders be practicing?
A: The plan is to have two, 1-hour practices during the week. However, once the season starts, practices may drop down to one, 1-hour practice per week.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: The registration fee is $60. We will also ask that you purchase the pair of bunners to be worn under each uniform. All other parts of the uniform, including top, skirt and pom poms will be provided by the program.

Q: My child is interested in participating, but doesn't have any cheerleading, gymnastics or tumbling experience.
A: No problem! We want anyone interested in cheerleading to come out and give it a try. If you've got Saints spirit, we need you!

Saints Hold St. Mary-Vermilion to Season-Low 2 pts in 16-2 Victory

The Robo pooch, Sugar (56 dog years), and Gizmo Knoth (age unknown) and other team pets probably disagree with the saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks," especially when a dog treat hangs in the balance. But can one teach new dogs new tricks? The 4th grade boys(4GB) "mad dog" Saints answered this question in the affirmative on Saturday morning at St Mary Gym in the lakeside sailing town of Vermilion with a resounding 16-2 decision, which was closer than the score indicates. Showing off new sideline and baseline inbound plays, refining their new "stack" offense, and playing a harassing defense the Saints jumped out to a 5-2 halftime lead and never looked back. After scoring 2 pts in the 3rd quarter, they kicked it into full throttle with a season-high 9 pts in the 4th to win running away.

The 4GB Saints were led in rebounding by Jackson, Chris, Nathan and Adam and scoring by Zach, Matt, and Nick with 8, 6 & 2 pts, respectively. Simon, Gio and Mikey added key steals, screens and stops and generally disrupted a stymied St Mary offense. Henry, resting a sore foot, contributed invaluable moral support and kept the boys relaxed on the sidelines. Overall, our Saints took a "boatload" of shots, especially during one 30-second episode when 11 consecutive shots sailed east & west over the rim without sinking through the cords. Putting a positive spin on things, we did garner 10 rebounds and more than a few chuckles on that series of misses. This raises another question heading into the St. Jude/St. Mary Tournament, can we teach new dogs (4GB Saints) some old tricks (lay-ups and 5-footers)? We'll find out on Thursday at St. Jude's.

Gio & Saints try to steal show; Short-staffed St. Pete Acquiesces to St. Ambrose 21-7

Sat., 12/29/12 Week 5 Recap - vs. St Ambrose (Ehrbar)- The distinguishing characteristic of a Catholic education at St. Peter School is the emphasis on Jesus Christ and Judaeo-Christian wisdom and values. This emphasis includes the Golden Rule (not explicitly in Scripture) and the 10 Commandments (explicitly in Scripture). When it comes to pure basketball play on the hardcourt, however, the St. Peter Saints were selective in the teachings which would guide their play. Ignoring the 7th Commandment and acting in their own self-interest, Gio ignited a 4th quarter rally with 4 steals, and Zach, Mikey, Nick & Adam lifted 2 each, giving fits to a talented St. Ambrose team. The rally fell short, though, as the Saints tournament record evened up at 1 - 1 with a 21 - 7 loss to the boys from Brunswick.
With Matthew, Henry, Jackson, and Coaches Chris & Matt in other locales for the holidays, it was an uphill battle from the start. Our boys were able to get their fair share of close (and some not so close) shots, but the orange orb was hesistant to meet the bottom of the net. Chris scored our only point in the first half, going 1 - 2 from the free-toss tape. Due to our pesky, "Mad dog" defense, we were only down 6 - 1 at the intermission to a team that is no stranger to double-digit halftime scoring.
The 3rd quarter was the difference-maker as St. Ambrose outscored the Saints 10-0 - so that's enough about that. In the 4th stanza, the Saints outscored the opposition 6 - 5 with Zach scoring 5 and Nick hitting a free throw as Simon, Nathan and Adam tightened things up in the paint and Gio frustrated their point guard with his steals. For the game, Gio (3), Chris (2), Zack (2), and Nick (1) led our rebounding efforts. St. Peter's will look to carry this agressiveness into Friday's 7:00 finale against St. Joseph - Avon Lake. And whether in this tourney or the St. Jude/St. Mary or St. PeterTournament in the weeks ahead, the Saints will likely choose to temporarily disregard the 10th Commandment. Development & FUNdamentals are the goal this season but coveting a tournament trophy ain't an unhealthy motivation.

Saints beat back St Barts 11 - 9

Week 4 Recap - vs. St Bartholomew's (SB) - Conventional Wisdom (and Gomer Pyle, USMC of the 60's military sit-com) has advised that, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." Our Saints, knowingly or not, let this maxim inspire their play last Saturday, 12/22 and emerged with an 11-9 victory over St Bart's in front of 134 frantic fans at Olmsted Community Gym. Trailing at halftime, the end of the 3rd quarter, and with minutes left in the game, the boys kept executing and shooting and succeeded in achieving their first win in the opening game of the St. Mary of the Falls Holiday Hoops Tournament.
Mikey (2 pts) got the Saints on the board with a nifty 5-footer after several of our shots sailed east & west of the rim. With Matthew and Zach taking turns runnning the offense, and Gio & Henry setting screens from their Wing positions, we took a 2-1 lead into the 2nd quarter.
Nathan, Jackson, Adam, Chris and Nick controlled the backboards at both ends of the court in the 2nd quarter and throughout the contest, each garnering 4-5 rebounds. Matthew, Mikey, and Nick lifted key steals and Zach scored the first 2 of his 6 total pts on a blazing right-side drive to the net. Our defense allowed 2 buckets and we took a halftime break facing a 5-4 deficit.
The 3rd quarter was a defensive stalemate as Henry, Zach, Matthew, Gio, Nick and Mikey gave St. Bart's ballhandlers fits. Our big guys, Jackson, Nathan, Chris and Adam were stingy under the basket and Matthew (2 pts) matched St. Bart's one basket with one of his own to make it a 7-6 game with 6 minutes to play.
Nick and Chris provided assistance in running the offense in the 4th act freeing Zach up to score his 2nd bucket. With about 1:00 to play, Adam was hacked in the act of shooting and stepped to the charity stripe with the Saints down 9-8. The previously frenzied crowd quieted to a hush and Adam, ice in his veins, hit the first of two free throws to knot the game at 9. Zach (6 pts)followed right after with a go-ahead bucket to make the count 11-9 Saints ahead. After forcing a decisive turnover, Chris, Zach and the offense stalled and ran the time off the clock to the approving cheers of the St. Peter contingent. As Gomer Pyle would have said, "Golly!", "Shazaam!", and "Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!'
