Saints Hold St. Mary-Vermilion to Season-Low 2 pts in 16-2 Victory

The Robo pooch, Sugar (56 dog years), and Gizmo Knoth (age unknown) and other team pets probably disagree with the saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks," especially when a dog treat hangs in the balance. But can one teach new dogs new tricks? The 4th grade boys(4GB) "mad dog" Saints answered this question in the affirmative on Saturday morning at St Mary Gym in the lakeside sailing town of Vermilion with a resounding 16-2 decision, which was closer than the score indicates. Showing off new sideline and baseline inbound plays, refining their new "stack" offense, and playing a harassing defense the Saints jumped out to a 5-2 halftime lead and never looked back. After scoring 2 pts in the 3rd quarter, they kicked it into full throttle with a season-high 9 pts in the 4th to win running away.

The 4GB Saints were led in rebounding by Jackson, Chris, Nathan and Adam and scoring by Zach, Matt, and Nick with 8, 6 & 2 pts, respectively. Simon, Gio and Mikey added key steals, screens and stops and generally disrupted a stymied St Mary offense. Henry, resting a sore foot, contributed invaluable moral support and kept the boys relaxed on the sidelines. Overall, our Saints took a "boatload" of shots, especially during one 30-second episode when 11 consecutive shots sailed east & west over the rim without sinking through the cords. Putting a positive spin on things, we did garner 10 rebounds and more than a few chuckles on that series of misses. This raises another question heading into the St. Jude/St. Mary Tournament, can we teach new dogs (4GB Saints) some old tricks (lay-ups and 5-footers)? We'll find out on Thursday at St. Jude's.
