Gio & Saints try to steal show; Short-staffed St. Pete Acquiesces to St. Ambrose 21-7

Sat., 12/29/12 Week 5 Recap - vs. St Ambrose (Ehrbar)- The distinguishing characteristic of a Catholic education at St. Peter School is the emphasis on Jesus Christ and Judaeo-Christian wisdom and values. This emphasis includes the Golden Rule (not explicitly in Scripture) and the 10 Commandments (explicitly in Scripture). When it comes to pure basketball play on the hardcourt, however, the St. Peter Saints were selective in the teachings which would guide their play. Ignoring the 7th Commandment and acting in their own self-interest, Gio ignited a 4th quarter rally with 4 steals, and Zach, Mikey, Nick & Adam lifted 2 each, giving fits to a talented St. Ambrose team. The rally fell short, though, as the Saints tournament record evened up at 1 - 1 with a 21 - 7 loss to the boys from Brunswick.
With Matthew, Henry, Jackson, and Coaches Chris & Matt in other locales for the holidays, it was an uphill battle from the start. Our boys were able to get their fair share of close (and some not so close) shots, but the orange orb was hesistant to meet the bottom of the net. Chris scored our only point in the first half, going 1 - 2 from the free-toss tape. Due to our pesky, "Mad dog" defense, we were only down 6 - 1 at the intermission to a team that is no stranger to double-digit halftime scoring.
The 3rd quarter was the difference-maker as St. Ambrose outscored the Saints 10-0 - so that's enough about that. In the 4th stanza, the Saints outscored the opposition 6 - 5 with Zach scoring 5 and Nick hitting a free throw as Simon, Nathan and Adam tightened things up in the paint and Gio frustrated their point guard with his steals. For the game, Gio (3), Chris (2), Zack (2), and Nick (1) led our rebounding efforts. St. Peter's will look to carry this agressiveness into Friday's 7:00 finale against St. Joseph - Avon Lake. And whether in this tourney or the St. Jude/St. Mary or St. PeterTournament in the weeks ahead, the Saints will likely choose to temporarily disregard the 10th Commandment. Development & FUNdamentals are the goal this season but coveting a tournament trophy ain't an unhealthy motivation.
12/29/12 Player o' the game - Gio
