Intercity All-Stars Hit Boston Park League with Loss BOSTON HERALD Monday, July 24, 2006 WAKEFIELD - Intercity League All-Star head coach Rick DeAngelis committed the unthinkable at the conclusion of his squad’s 4-1 victory over the Boston Park League All-Stars yesterday at Walsh Field. The veteran skipper, who also manages two-time ICL champion Lexington, was cheering on Tim Dempsey of the Cassell Club, one of the Blue Sox’ foes. “It was a bit strange to be cheering on a rival,” DeAngelis said. “But it is easy to root for this team because it was a real privilege for me to coach these guys.” Shut out for eight innings, the BPL mounted a threat in the top of the ninth against ICL pitcher Brian Shapiro (Watertown Reds). With no outs, reserve Evan Targugno (Stockyard) reached second after ICL committed its only error of the game. A.J. Turner (Mass. Envelope) followed with a single to center, putting runners at the corners. Matt Moyen’s (Mass. Envelope) RBI groundout then cut BPL’s deficit to 4-1. The ICL could have done additional damage, but, with two men aboard, Jim Pierce (ADSL) watched Dempsey run down his deep shot to center. Turner attempted to tag up, but Dempsey gunned the ball to catcher Matt Fiore (Mooney Dental), who applied the tag for a game-ending double play. “It is nice to end on an upbeat play like that,” DeAngelis said. It was fitting that DeAngelis’ crew ignited ICL’s offense. Bill Cooke (Blue Sox) surrendered a leadoff single to Brandon Cody (Padres) in the first before inducing three straight fly balls to get out of the frame. In the bottom of the second, Dan Powers (Lexington) walked and moved to second on a single by Jesse Bruinsma (Gately). Starting catcher Eric Poling (Lexington) then mashed a 1-2 offering from Frank Emery (Mass. Envelope) to center, scoring Powers to give ICL the 1-0 lead. In the third, Jake Dillard (Lexington) cranked a double to deep left and then motored his way into third on the first of two BPL errors. He scored on Josh Klimkiewicz’s (Casell) RBI groundout to stretch ICL’s lead to 2-0. In the sixth, BPL threatened. After Turner led things off with a bunt single, Pierce pulverized an offering from Derek Cotonis (Gately) only to watch the pitcher snag the ball on its way back up the middle and then doubled up Turner. “We came out aggressive, but I think that we missed some opportunities,” BPL manager/designated hitter Steve Busby said. “It was a well-pitched game and I thought that we did hit the ball hard early.” ICL tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. Jamie Gath (Gately) reached on a batter’s interference call and then back-to-back singles by Jeff Paquette (Cassell) and Dan Hughes (Lexington) loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Mike Andre (Andre Chiefs) scored Gath and then Paquette scooted home on a passed ball to make it a 4-0 game.
