2007 Ohio South State Cup - Lynx Make Final Four

Posted by Debora Hatke on Apr 22 2007 at 05:00PM PDT
The Lynx enjoyed a very successful run in their first Ohio South state cup, making it to the final four in Columbus before being eliminated by Cincinati Classics Hammer. The Lynx were given a difficult district game against a very good CUSL Comp 1 team in the Westsdie Chargers. Goals from Kristyn Hatke and Claire Webb gave the Lynx a 2-1 victory in an exciting, closely matched game. The Lynx advanced through the round of 16 with a 3-1 win over Cincinnati Futbol Academy Gold. After surviving an early scare when CFA hit the cross bar in the second minute, Lauren Hoover gave the Lynx the lead. CFA tied the game on a breakaway just before half time. The Lynx took command early in the second half. Hoover found Claire Webb unmarked at the top of the penalty area to put the Lynx ahead. Minutes later an excellent corner from Hoover forced a CFA defender to head the ball into her own goal. Several Lynx came close the scoring in the second half, including Kristyn Hatke who had a powerful header spectacularly saved by the CFA goal keeper. The quarter final saw the Lynx play the top team in the Miami Valley Premier league, Shelby County Alliance. The Lynx took an early lead through Lauren Heger's long range free kick. SCA levelled the score, but just before half time good combination play from Cailyn Wachtel and Katie Mueller put Hether McNutt one on one with the SCA goalkeeper and she camly found the back of the net. The Lynx played with great confidence and controlled the second half. Goal keeper Brooke Mauro's punt put Lauren Hoover behind the defence and a clinical finish extended the Lynx lead. In the final minute a scramble in front of the Lynx goal led to a consolation goal for SCA, but the Lynx ran out the final minute of the game for a well deserved 3-2 victory and a place in the semi finals in Columbus. The semi final in Columbus saw the Lynx run into a Cincinnati Classics Hammer team that was firing on all cyclinders. The Classics jumped out to a quick two goal lead and never allowed the Lynx to settle and play their game. Lynx hopes were briefly raised when Kristyn Hatke thought she had reduced the deficit to one goal, but she was ruled narrowly offside. Classics finisehed the game as comfortable 4-0 winners.
