18 Maroon claims AAU National Championship

Posted by Jarred Faltysek at Jul 23, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The BV Renegades 18 Maroon team capped a perfect 7-0 run in the AAU Upperclassmen National tournament by defeating the Louisiana Warriors 10-9 Thursday morning at the Baltimore Orioles Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida. . The Renegades claimed their 3rd AAU Upperclassmen National Championship in the last 5 years with the win. Willy Amador, Kyle Barfield, CJ Bills, Lee May Gonzalez and Carson Skala were selected to the All-Tournament Team . The Renegades finished the season on a 14 game winning streak and an overall record of 26-4-4.

From the BVR 17U team, Jack Baker, Jacob Stegent and Holt Van Etten were selected to the AAU Underclassmen All-Tournament Team. BVR 17U was defeated in the Semi-Finals by eventual Champion TSA Titans. The 17U squad ended their season with a 24-8-3 overall record.

Dayden Lane capped an ipressive week for the 16U Maroon squad by tossing a no hitter in defeat of the 17U Louisiana All Stars 4-0 to capture the B.E.S.T. Baseball underclassmen national championship.
The title game would be well played by both teams , as they looked to capture and capitalize on any momentum given. With Louisiana's ace matching Lane zero for zero, the game would remain scoreless thru the first 5 innings. In the top of the sixth, just as he has done all tournament  , Chandler Jozwiak would provide the spark the Renegades were looking for. After falling in the hole 1-2 , he battled his way to a 9 pitch walk. Chris Chavez would follow with an infield single and Corbin Vines would reach on an error while laying down a sacrifice bunt. With the bases loaded and nobody out , Louisiana would draw in their infield in an effort to cut the potential run at the plate. It nearly worked. Cameron Neel grounded sharply towards the shortstop but a rushed throw to the plate would overthrow the catcher and both Jozwiak and Chavez would score. With runners in scoring position and momentum in hand,  the Renegades looked to send a message and Zach Albers delivered as he drove the first pitch he saw off the  centerfield wall for a standup double plating both Vines and Neel. When the dust had settled the Renegades led 4-0 and all attention turned to Lane to seal the deal. He wouldnt disappoint. As Louisiana's final hitter grounded out to second base , Lane would complete his no hitter and lead his squad to the national championship.
The Renegades finished the tournament with a 5-1 record, including a stretch in bracket play that saw the offense score in 15 of 18 innings.

CHAMPIONSHIP

32 teams began the BVR Invitational on Thursday with hopes of playing for a tournament title on Sunday afternoon at Olsen Field. When the dust had settled the BVR Maroon and BVR 17U teams found themselves facing off for the championship.
The Maroon and 17U squads entered Sundays title tilt with identical 5-0 records in the tournament. With both teams coming of emotional hard fought victories in the semifinals earlier that day at Olsen Field, the Championship game would not disappoint as the BVR Maroon team claimed an exciting 8-6 victory.
After a scoreless top half of the first by the 17U squad, the Maroon team threatened in the bottom half of the inning with a one out single by Carson Skala. Anticipating a steal the 17U team perfectly executed a pitchout and catcher Holt Van Etten nailed Skala at 2nd base for the 2nd out of the inning. 17U team starter Jacob Stegent would record a strikeout for the 3rd out, energizing a fired up 17U Squad. They would then carry that momentum as they plated 3 runs in the top half of the 2nd inning highlighted by RBI base hits by Brady Derrett, Trevor Russ and Stegent. Maroon team starter Mason Schuh would escape further damage as he recorded a 2 out strikeout with the bases loaded to leave the game 3-0.
The Maroon team would answer back in a big way as they would open up the bottom half of the  inning with back to back singles. Cole Williams then perfectly placed a bunt down the 3rd baseline and the throw sailed into RF allowing a run to score. Tanner Driskill then delivered a 2 RBI base hit to tie the game at 3. Brad Sutton followed with a bunt single and again the throw got away from the 1st baseman allowing another run to score to give the maroon team a 4-3 lead. The maroon squad was not done yet as CJ Bills followed with an RBI basehit. Skala then plated a run with a SAC fly and Kyle Barfield added to the damage with an RBI single. In all the Maroon team would score 6 runs in the inning while sending 10 batters to the plate.
After the 17U squad went scoreless in the the top of the 3rd the maroon team went back to work in the bottom of the inning. Schuh reached base after being hit by a pitch and would  later scored on a SAC fly by Driskill to extend the maroon team's lead to 7-3. Sutton and Chase Bledsoe would then reach base and with 2 outs were at 2nd and 3rd as the maroon team looked to take complete control of the game. 17U team relief pitcher Michael Reyes however would induce a flyout for the 3rd out to end the threat.
With their backs squarley against the wall, the 17U team dug deep looking for answers. Derrett led off the inning with a sharply hit single. Following a flyout , Russ delivered another base hit, chasing maroon team starter Schuh from the game. Leadoff hitter Stegent drew a walk loading the bases with only 1 out. Joey Orsak followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 7-4. A passed ball would plate another run and Van Etten would plate a run on a fielders choice for the 2nd out to make it a 7-6. Driskill, on in relief of Schuh , settled in an retired the final batter but the 17U team had climbed back in the game and once again had seized momentum.
The Maroon team went scoreless in the bottom of the inning however Driskill baffled the 17U bats over the final 2 2/3 to slam the door. After a scoreless top of the 5th the Maroon team looked for some insurance in the bottom half. Driskill continued his solid championship game efforts as he drew a one out walk and then stole 2nd. Following a strikeout for the 2nd out , Bledsoe delivered an RBI basehit on the first pitch he saw giving the maroon team an 8-6 lead.
In the top of the inning Driskill gave up a 2 out single before striking out the final batter to end the game and giving the BVR maroon team the 2014 BVR Invitational Championship.
The maroon team finished the tournament 6-0 while improving their season record to 19-4-4. The 17U team saw their 11 game winning streak come to an end and fell to 20-4-3 on the summer.

In the semifinals earlier that day the BVR 17U team defeated the Texas Slam 4-3 in 8 innings. In the top of the 8th , the Slam put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Jacob Stegent came on in relief and worked his way out of the jam preserving the tie game. In the bottom of the inning Trevor Russ delivered a 2 out walkoff RBI single to propel the 17U team to the title game.
In the 2nd semifinal game of the day at Olsen Field the BVR Maroon team squared off against the Baton Rouge Marucci Whitesox. Both teams entered the contest 4-0 on the tournament. It was the 2nd meeting of the summer between the two teams as the Whitesox had defeated the Renegades 7-2 in the Marucci tournament semifinals earlier in the summer at LSU's Alex Box Stadium. Runs would be at a premium with two D1 signees facing each other on the mound, Rice signee Willy Amador for the Renegades and an LSU signee for the Marucci squad.
The Renegades broke thru in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Cole Williams led off with a single and then stole 2nd. Brad Sutton moved Williams to 3rd with a SAC bunt and then Chase Bledsoe plated Williams with an RBI fielders choice. That lead would stand untill Mason Schuh led off the Renegades half of the 5th with a double. Amador would then plate Schuh with an RBI single giving the Renegades a 2-0 lead.  Amador took a 2-0 lead to the 6th and final inning. After striking out the first 2 batters he then issued back to back 2 out walks. Marucci then plated their first run of the game on a throwing error to cut the lead to 2-1. With the tying run on 3rd base and go ahead run at 1st base, Amador got a swinging strikeout of Marucci's 3 hole hitter on a 1-2 count to end the game. It was Amador's 11th strikeout of the game. The win put the Renegades into the BVR Invitational championship game. It was the first and only loss of the season for the Marucci squad.
