June 25-27 LIGHTNING DEFEND-WIN STATE TITLE

Posted by Jon Fregger at Mar 8, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Fresh off their victory in the Delaware State PONY Championship, the Lightning (34-9-1) defended their title of Maryland State NSA Champion. Using two-out rallies and a never-say-die attitude, the ladies from Pasadena took the most cherished of their 5 championships of the year. Game 1 of the weekend's games found the Lightning paired with the very strong Bayside Blues. The Lightning scored 10 unanswered runs in the final two innings to beat the rival Bayside Blues 10-6. This was not so much a comeback as it was a take back. Next up for the Lightning were the STARS of Maryland. In their second game the Lightning pounded out 12 hits and beat the Maryland STARS 11-1 in a 4 inning, mercy rule shortened, game. The third game of the weekend found the Lightning in their first meeting of the season with the Damascus Hurricane. A steady offense, solid defense and strong pitching led the Lightning to an 8-0 shut out and advanced the Lightning to the finals of the NSA Maryland State Championship. Having worked their way back up through the Losers' Bracket, the Bayside Blues became the Lightning's opponent for the Championship. The Blues took their revenge on the team from Lake Shore completely dominating the Lightning 10-1 to force a final game between the two finalists. In a hard fought battle between two great teams, the Lake Shore Lightning were able to defend their state title beating the Bayside Blues 6-5 in 9 innings.

Lightning are Champions
Taking all four games they played, the 2004 Lake Shore Lightning claimed the championship of their first tournament of the year. By beating the Maryland STARS (3-2) and Gainesville Lightning (13-0) on Saturday and the Delaware Diamonds (8-1) and the STARS (8-6 Championship Game) Sunday the Lightning earned the top prize and a birth in the World Series at the end of July.

By weekend's end, each of the girls had played an important role in bringing home the 1st place trophy. Stellar pitching by Megan and Melanie, both in their first year's in the circle, insured the Lightning were never out of a game. While the girls dominated their namesakes from Gainesville, Virginia, and the Diamonds, in both games against the STARS the Lightning found themselves coming from behind to claim victory.

Next up for the girls is a trip up Highway 95 to New Jersey this coming weekend for the Firebird Faceoff.
