April 3-4 Early Bird -CANCELLED

Posted by Jon Fregger at Apr 1, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Rain washed out the Lightning's first tournament of the 2004 season set for April 3 and 4. Two days of steady rain and an unfavorable forecast led tournament officials to pull the plug. The Lightning are hoping for drier weather and better luck in two weeks when they are scheduled to compete in the Spring Fling tournament April 17-18.

Dominating the field, the Lake Shore Lightning (30-8-1, 5-0) claimed the Delaware State PONY Championship. During their five game romp through the weekend the Lightning scored 47 runs while giving up just 7.

The first game found the Lightning beating the Diamonds of Delaware 9-1 in a five inning Mercy Rule shortened affair. Sarah and Kyrstin started their first games for the Lightning and played the entire game. Megan had a homerun and three rbi. Melanie drove in a couple with a double and a triple. And Lauren was a remarkable 3 for 3 at the plate, scoring one and driving in another.

Saturday's second game proved to be the most competative for the Lightning as they beat the STARS of Maryland by a score of 7-3. It was Melanie's turn to homer as she scored 3 runs, drove in 2 and stole a couple bases. Of note in the field was a rally killing, leaping grab of a line drive headed for right field by Bridget.

The Lightning made quick work of the Delaware Magic in two seperate games on Sunday morning. The first game, which marked the end of round-robin play, was ended by the Mercy Rule with the Lightning winning 14-1. The seconded game, which matched the top seeded Lightning and the 4th seeded Magic, ended early as well with the Lightning taking an 11-1 victory.

Sunday afternoon's Championship game pitted the Lightning against the Maryland STARS. Strong pitching, stingy defense and timely hitting led the Lightning to a 6-1 victory.

This weekend's victory, coupled with last weekend's championship in the June Jamboree, give the Lightning good momentum at they approach the Maryland State NSA Championship next weekend.
