RIVERSIDE VS HOBAN

Dec. 4, 2008 Riverside 4, Hoban 3 CANTON -- It's a long drive from Lake County to Canton for a hockey game at 8:40 p.m. on a Saturday night. It would have been an even longer drive back had the Beavers become the first team to lose a North Coast High School Hockey League game to Hoban. Riverside, continuing a steady climb in the standings, averted the upset with a 4-3 overtime victory. It pushed the Beavers (5-1) to a first-place tie with 10 points while Hoban fell to 0-6. The ice was tilted in Riverside's favor in the overtime period after a back-and-forth game. Even though there were only two shots on goal by Riverside, there were a number of scoring chances with the majority of the period spent in Hoban's defensive zone. Hoban did not have any scoring chances in the overtime period. With 1:44 left in overtime, Colten Siedlarczyk buried the rebound off a great shot by Robert Stolz from a fantastic pass from Matt Crouse. As good as the goal was, it was made possible because Riverside goalie Devan Rose made the save of the season in the third period. With about 2 1/2 minutes remaining and the scored tied, 3-3, Hoban was on a power play when the Knights' Broc McCroskey, who already had a goal and an assist in the game, made a break behind the defense and deked around Rose to put a shot on from point-blank range. Rose made an amazing, reach-back glove save, silencing Hoban players and fans who had begun to cheer what they thought was the go-ahead goal. Rose flipped the puck out of his glove and it was Riverside fans' turn to go wild. Stolz gave Riverside a 2-0 lead in the first period, scoring a pair of unassisted goals, one short-handed and the second on a power play. The Beavers took a 2-1 lead into the second and third periods. Nick Tribuzzo scored a pretty goal with a nice bit of stick work with an assist from Siedlarczyk, giving the Beavers a 3-1 lead with eight minutes remaining in the third period. Rose finished with 23 saves as Riverside outshot the Knights, 43-26.
