Sorcerer started elimination play today in the Colorado Fireworks Tournament here in Aurora, CO. Starting the game for Sorcerer was Oklahoma-committed pitcher, Michelle Gascoigne. With high scoring victories over the TX Connection Gold, 11-3, and the TX Hearts of Texas, 6-1, Sorcerer was pumped going into game three against the 2006 Fireworks Champion Worth Firecrackers. However, after 13 games in 7 days, fatigue may have set in, as Sorcerer committed several errors in the 2nd inning to allow the Firecrackers to score 4 runs. In the third inning, Mackenzey Bard relieved Michelle Gascoigne and shut down the Firecracker offense. Sorcerer offense needed to step up, and after 5 innings of play, it finally did, with two runs in the 6th inning. In the top of the seventh inning, Sorcerer outfielder Shenise Cox put out all three batters, easily catching 3 consecutive pop flies to left field. In the bottom of the inning, Sorcerer resolved not to quit. Whitney Shaw, who homered in the the previous game, started the action with a hit that bounced over the left field fence for a ground rule double. Brooke Coloma followed suit with another double that also bounced over the fence, scoring Whitney. Then, Kasey Tydingco hit a single to left-center field, bringing Brooke to 3rd. With two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, Notre-Dame bound Sorcerer Katie Fluery stepped up to the plate. Katie fouled off pitch after pitch, until she got the one she wanted. Then, she reeled back and swung. Fans rose to their feet as the ball took flight to deep left-center field. Alas, the ball fell short, coming within 10 feet of being a walk-off home run and was caught by the Cal-bound left fielder ending the game with a score of 3-4.
Sorcerer completed pool play today in the Colorado Fireworks Tournament with 16-0 and 8-2 victories over FL Team DeMarini and TX Houston Havoc, respectively. With yesterday's 3-1 victory over the GA East Cobb Bullets and the 2-3 loss to the AZ Hotshots Gold, Sorcerer finished in second place in their pool (C). Pool play was punctuated with home runs by Maya Burns and Ashley Rose against the GA East Cobb Bullets and an amazing, left-handed slap hit home run over the center field fence by Emily Allard against the FL Team DeMarini. Pool play results and winners brackets are updated throughout the tournament.
emily mug shot Emily, named to the third team, "had a 0.915 ERA and averaged more than a strikeout per inning and hit .386 with 22 runs."
Shenise Cox Shenise, named to the second team, is a "versatile junior who hit a team-leading .397 with 19 RBI and 17 runs scored."
Sorcerer Qualfies For 2007 Gold Nationals Sorcerer made it to the final game of the winner's bracket today to face the San Jose Strikkers coached by Tom Sorci. Strikkers won the coin toss and elected to be the home team. The Strikkers struck early in the game, with a home run by University of Kentucky-bound Megan Yocke in the first inning. In the third inning, Sorcerer Samantha Camuso answered with a 3-run homer that scored Katie Fleury and Emily Allard, Sam's second home run of the summer season. Princeton-bound Jamie Latierre responded with another Strikker home run in the fifth. And, in the top of the sixth, with a runner on second, Maya Burns hit a double to center field for an RBI, continuing her incredible hitting streak of 26 hits in her last 35 at bats. But while credit can go to the offense for scoring runs, the Sorcerer defense was absolutely flawless. Diving catches by shortstop Katie Fleury, incredible sprinting catches by outfielders Shenise Cox, Tiffany Dueck, and Emily Allard, and consistent pitching from Stephanie Bregante and Michelle Gascoigne held the Strikkers to only two runs. After six innings of play, the game was called with a final score of 4 to 2. Sorcerer had qualified for Gold Nationals! N.B. Later in the day, the Strikkers went on to defeat the Salinas Valley Wildcats to qualify for nationals from the loser bracket. The Strikkers join the San Jose Sting (coached by Bob Perales) who qualified earlier in the loser bracket and San Jose Strike Zone (coached by Don Ford) who qualified from the loser bracket of the regional tournament a week ago as the only NorCal teams currently who have qualified for Gold Nationals.
