Sorcerer Defeats Strikkers 4-2 to Qualify for Nationals!!!

Posted by Derrick Burns on Jun 23 2007 at 05:00PM PDT
Sorcerer Qualfies For 2007 Gold Nationals Sorcerer made it to the final game of the winner's bracket today to face the San Jose Strikkers coached by Tom Sorci. Strikkers won the coin toss and elected to be the home team. The Strikkers struck early in the game, with a home run by University of Kentucky-bound Megan Yocke in the first inning. In the third inning, Sorcerer Samantha Camuso answered with a 3-run homer that scored Katie Fleury and Emily Allard, Sam's second home run of the summer season. Princeton-bound Jamie Latierre responded with another Strikker home run in the fifth. And, in the top of the sixth, with a runner on second, Maya Burns hit a double to center field for an RBI, continuing her incredible hitting streak of 26 hits in her last 35 at bats. But while credit can go to the offense for scoring runs, the Sorcerer defense was absolutely flawless. Diving catches by shortstop Katie Fleury, incredible sprinting catches by outfielders Shenise Cox, Tiffany Dueck, and Emily Allard, and consistent pitching from Stephanie Bregante and Michelle Gascoigne held the Strikkers to only two runs. After six innings of play, the game was called with a final score of 4 to 2. Sorcerer had qualified for Gold Nationals! N.B. Later in the day, the Strikkers went on to defeat the Salinas Valley Wildcats to qualify for nationals from the loser bracket. The Strikkers join the San Jose Sting (coached by Bob Perales) who qualified earlier in the loser bracket and San Jose Strike Zone (coached by Don Ford) who qualified from the loser bracket of the regional tournament a week ago as the only NorCal teams currently who have qualified for Gold Nationals.
