SCP ALUMNI MAKING AN IMPACT

2010 marks the first SCP college graduating class as three SCP 2006 high school grads complete their college careers and graduate this spring. The original SCP team was the 2007 grad team yet these three players were age eligable and a part of that team.

Congratulations to Erik Sommerville; Justin Schumer and Nick Fogleman on their upcoming graduations and baseball careers.

Francis Marion University Patriots ; Florence, South Carolina

The Francis Marion Patriots (34-11) are currently ranked #5 in the nation in NCAA Division II baseball. The Pats finished the regular season as the Peach Belt Conference Eastern Division Champions. The Patriots will host the NCAA Division II SE Regionals the weekend of May 13 - 16 in Florence, South Carolina.

Francis Marion is led by senior ERIK SOMMERVILLE 2006 on the mound. Erik is literally the original SC Panther player having been the first player for the Pineville Panthers 10U team in 1998 that has evolved to become the current SCP team. Erik is currently the #2 ranked pitcher in the Peach Belt Conference with a 5-2 record; 2.87 ERA and 57 strike outs in 59 innings pitched.  Erik graduated in a special ceremony at the Presidents residence on May 5 with a Bachelors Degree with Honors in Business Management . The ceremony was held for graduating senior baseball players who missed the regular ceremony while at the Peachbelt Conference Tournament. Congratulations to Erik and his parents Art and Kay.

PRESTON SHUEY 2007 is the starting 1B and one of the Pats leading hitters; hitting .339 (57 for 168) on the season with 11 Doubles; 4 HR and 39 RBIs. He has hit safely in 39 of 42 games for the Pats this season. Preston was recently made a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma academic fraternity which is the National College Athlete Honor Society. Criteria for this elite fraternity of college athletes requires a GPA of greater than 3.5 and a recommendation from their coach and athletic director. Congratulations to Preston and his parents Mark and Karen. 

KYLE GREENWALT 2007 has begun the season playing for the Lancaster, CA Jethawks. The Jethawks are the high single A team in the Houston Astros organization. Kyle was the Jethawks opening day starter and this week took his record to 1-0 with a victory over Cucomonga. In four starts this season he has struck out 18 batters in 22 innings pitched; given up 1 base on balls and has an earned run average of 2.18.

CLAY WATSON 2008 Catawba College helped lead the #24th ranked Indians to the SAC Tournament Championship with a complete game victory in the tournament semi final game. Clay spread out 7 hits while striking out 3 and walking 0 for his third win of the season. He has a team leading 2.63ERA; record of 3-0 and 33 strike outs in 41 innings pitched. The Indians won the SAC Championship and will play in the NCAA Division II Regionals in Florence, SC.

JUSTIN SCHUMER 2006 University of North Carolina Asheville is hitting .363 with 12 Doubles; 6 HRs and 29 RBIs for the Bulldogs. He is a weekend starter on the mound and has 42 strike outs in 56 innings pitched with an ERA of 4.78.

Justin is a four year letterman at UNCA. For his career to date he is hitting .320 with 200  total hits after going 8 for 18 in week 9. He has 39 Doubles; 21 HRs and 110 RBIs along with a weekend starting role on the mound for much of his career where he has pitched 158 Innings; Striking Out 134.

Justin will graduate from UNCA this spring with a Degree in Psychology. He is a member of the Psi Chi National Honor Society; was honored with the UNCA Baseball Scholar Athlete of the Year and will graduate with a 3.4 GPA. Congratulations to Justin and his parents Barry and Melissa Schumer

NICK FOGLEMAN 2006 Pfieffer College completed his career recently when the Falcons lost in the Conference Carolina Tournament championship game to Mt. Olive. Nick was a four year letterman at Pfieffer highlighted by his junior year when he was voted the Conference Carolina Pitcher of the Year. In that season Nick had a 9-2 record with a 2.18 ERA while pitching 82 innings and striking out 83. For his career Nick had 14 wins; pitching 260 innings; striking out 205. Nick will graduate on May 8 with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Business Management and Economics. Congratulations to Nick and his parents Harry and Connie.
