PERFECT GAME 17U NATIONALS

The SCP 2009's begin competition in the Perfect Game 17U Nationals the week of July 8 in East Cobb, Georgia.

GAME 1

Starting Pitcher: Corey Roberts  6 IP; 3 H; 1 R; 3 K

Justin Setzer 1 IP; 1K

Hoping to break a tie going back to the Perfect Game World's in Jupiter versus the All Star Baseball Academy the Panthers locked up in a pitchers duel and again finished in a tie against the yanks from PA. With no score through 5 innings the All Stars scored a run on two hits in the sixth. The Panthers matched the run in their half of the inning without getting a hit off of a walk by Josh Greene; a sacrifice by Tyler Miller and a score on an error. Brian Holberton broke up the All Star no hitter in the seventh for the Cats only hit.

Winning Pitcher: Corbin Shive (5-0)

Leading Hitters: Seth Neely 2-2 (2B); Tyler Zupcic 2-4.

The Cats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third extended the lead to 7-1 for a win. Starting pitcher Corbin Shive dominated the 6-4-3 team with three pitch command and cruised to his 5th win of the season. Seth Neely and Tyler Zupcic both collected two hits; other Panthers getting hits were Brian Holberton; Richie Shaffer; Tyler Tewell; Rafael Gonzalez; Josh Greene and Corey Roberts.

Winning Pitcher: Justin Setzer (6-1)

Leading Hitters: Tyler Tewell 2-3 (HR/3RBI); Richie Shaffer 2-3 (3B); Ty Linton 2-4; Seth Neely 2-4.

The game versus the Texans was a series of lightening and rain delays that made for a long day. There was some lightening in the Panther bats as they pounded out 12 hits to win going away 11-3. Tyler Tewell supplied the big blow with a 3 run bomb in the 3rd to put the Cats out front. Richie Shaffer; Ty Linton and Seth Neely all had 2 hits and Corbin Shive; Rafael Gonzalez; C.A. Clayton and Shane Basen all had hits. Starting pitcher Mat Batts had to exit the game after 2 scoreless innings due to a long delay and Justin Setzer and Jesse Brewer closed the game out on the mound.

GAME 4

Atlanta Blue Jays  7.......................................................7......8.....0

The Panthers fell out of championship play consideration with a 7-5 loss to the Atlanta Blue Jays. After falling behind 0-3 in the first the Cats could not quite mount a comeback. Tyler Miller 2-4 with 2 doubles; Rafael Gonzalez 1-2 with a double and Brian Holberton 1-1 led the offense for the Panthers. Starting pitcher Luke Bard took the loss; giving up 2 earned runs in 4.33 innings pitched. Ryan Butler; Jesse Brewer and Richie Shaffer pitched in relief.

Winning Pitcher: Joseph Shealy (4-1)  5 IP; 3 H; 0 R; 5 K. Relief: Justin Setzer  2 IP; 1 H; 0 R; 5 K.

Leading Hitters: Josh Greene 2-3; Ty Linton 1-2; C.A. Clayton 1-3 (2B).

Joe Shealy and Justin Setzer combined for a shut out of the Clippers. Both struck out 5 while spreading out 4 hits. The Panthers scratched out runs in the 1rst and 6th for the 2009 Panthers 20th win of the summer season.

The 2009 Panthers will participate at UNCC and Wingate the weekend of July 17.
