State Championship Highlights

HIGH SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORS

11 SCP Players and Alums representing 4 different programs took home Championship Rings this year for their respective high school teams.

Piedmont High School brought home the North Carolina State 2A Championship. SCP 2014 Corey Sikes started and earned his 11th win of the season on the mound with no losses in the Panthers opening game of the best of three series. SCP 2013 Colby Barnette finished out on the other end by picking up the series and championship win on the mound in relief to give the Cats the schools first state title since 1984. Colby had 3 hits in the final game and went 5 for 7 for the event at the plate.

South Meck High School down one game and by a 0-2 score in the must win game two; literally squeezed home two runs for the victory and came from behind in game three to clinch the North Carolina State 4A Championship over Fuqua Varina. SCP 2014s Harris Yett and Brooks Kennedy were offensive leaders for the Sabres all season and both had multiple hits in the championship series. 2016 Lawson McArthur set himself up for a rare chance at a 4 peat being a freshman starter for the Sabres.

Weddington High School defended their North Carolina State 3A crown with a 2 games to 1 championship series victory over DH Conley. SCP 2014 Daniel Calabretta was voted the NC State 3A Tournament MVP after going 4 for 4; hitting for the cycle; on base 6 times; scoring 4 runs; stealing 2 bases and that was just in the deciding game three. SCP 2013 alums Alexander Bostic and Jeremy Schellhorn were big contributors to the Warriors in their run to their second championship in as many years.

Charlotte Christian also defended their North Carolina Independent School 3A crown with a series win over Wesleyan. SCP 2014 Nick Owens led the Knights and went 5 for 9 at the plate in the championship series. SCP 2013 Brett Milleman drove in the game winning RBI with a double in the deciding game of the championship. 2013 Bailey Ober finished the season 11-0 on the mound in helping lead the Knights.
