Lumber Company went a perfect 5-0 to win the 2003 Joliet City Tournament's 19 team Competitive Division. Lumber Company started the tournament with a 14-4 win over Samy's on Monday night and a 7-4 second round win over Ballers on Thursday night. Friday night Lumber Company faced Powerhouse in round 3. The game was close the entire way, it was tied at 3 going into the 6th. Lumber Co. was able to plate 1 run in the 6th and 2 in the 7th to come away with the 6-4 victory. Leading the LoCo were B.Walsh, 2-3; S.Munday, 2 RBIs and B.Petersen 2 RBIs. The win advanced the Lumber Co. to Saturday and the championship of the winners bracket and a match-up with Glory Days. In this game Glory Days open the first inning with 6 quick runs, only to have the LoCo answer back with 6 runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Glory Days put up 6 more runs in the top of 2, the LoCo came right back with 5 to make the score 12-11 in favor of Glory Days after 2 innings. After 4 frames the Lumber Co. was able to tie the game at 16. It was in the bottom of 5, trailing 17-16 did the LoCo make their move, an 8 run 5th and a 2 run 6th put the LoCo up by 9 and Glory Days could not come back, only scoring one more run to give the Lumber Co. the win by a final of 26-18. Leading the LoCo in this game were M.Wallace, 6-6, 1 HR and 5 RBIs; J.Behun, 4-4, 5 RBIs; J.Lesnik 4-5; R.Nurczyk, 4-6, 4 RBIs; B.Walsh 2-3, 3 BBs; J.Filas 3-4, 1 BB, 3 RBIs and K.Wallace 3-5, 3 RBIs. With the win the LoCo got to sit back, relax and see how the losers bracket played out. It was the LoCo's Friday night victim, Powerhouse, who battled back through the losers bracket and got a chance for revenge. The championship game proved to be a great contest. After a scoreless first the Lumber Co. were able to score 3 in the top of the second to take an early lead. The LoCo lead held until the bottom of 3 when Powerhouse scored 4 runs to go up 4-3. The Loco answered back pushing 2 runs across the dish in the top of 4 to take a 5-4 lead. That score held until the bottom of the 6th when Powerhouse scored 3 runs to take a 7-5 advantage going into the 7th inning. With the pressure to score at least 2 runs to avoid the "if game" the LoCo stepped up scoring 4 runs. The LoCo started the scoring on a Jeff Behun inside the park HR. Then a M.Staab walk and J.Lesnik base hit set up a S.Munday RBI single to tie the game at 7. The big blow came with 2 outs, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, B.Walsh dropped in a 2 run double giving the LoCo a 9-7 lead heading in to the bottom of the 7th. The LoCo were able to shut down any possible Powerhouse scoring chances, keyed by an unbelievable M.Staab diving catch in right field to get the first out of the inning. After a Powerhouse base hit, an excellent play by J.Lesnik at second base recorded the second out of the inning. Finally a fly ball to J.Filas in left sealed the deal and gave the LoCo the 9-7 win and the Joliet City Tournament Championship Title. Leading the Lumber Co. offense in the Championship game were B.Petersen, 3-4; J.Behun, 2-3, 2 RBIs, 1 HR, 1 3B; K.Wallace, 2-3, 3 RBIs; D.McGrath, 2-3 and B.Walsh, 2-4, 2 RBIs. Great work men. I am very proud of this team, we played hard and never gave up all tourney no matter what the scores or situations were, we played amazing defense and K.Wallace pitched spectacularly when the bats were not as hot as they could have been. It was truly a 12 man effort, with everyone contributing at one point or another toward the city title. Hitting stars for the week were as follows, J.Behun, .692, 1 HR, 7 RBIs; M.Staab, .692, 7 RBIs; M.Wallace, .611, 2 HRs, 7 RBIs; K.Wallace .600, 8 RBIs; B.Munday, .571; R.Nurczyk, .500, 1 HR, 7 RBIs, S.Munday, .500, 6 RBIs and D.McGrath, .500. Lumber Company's next game and first as Joliet City Champs (damn, that sounds good) is Tuesday night at 9:30pm on field #5 against Uncle Richies. *click on the headline above to access the Joliet Herald News' article covering the Lumber Company's championship game win.
