CK girls ice hockey wrapped up a great season against Grosse Pointe South in the girls ice hockey state final game on Saturday night in Novi. South won the game by a score of 3-1. South jumped out early to a 2-0 lead before Tarasai Karega scored on assists from Julia Kazmers and Sabrina Must. South would get another open net goal near the end of the game. Tarasai Karega was named game MVP for her performance. All State honors were awarded to Karega, Kazmers and Hilary Schreiber. Must was All State Honorable Mention. All four of the above players were named All League as were Katherine Park and Ariel Magidson. Thanks ladies for another great season. Next season is just around the corner.
It took over 57 minutes of playing time with 2 overtime sessions to decide this year’s MMGHSHL State Championship. For the fourth year in a row, defending champs, Grosse Pointe South faced off against Cranbrook Kingswood on Saturday night at Novi Ice Arena. South would open the scoring at 5:25 of the first period when Captain Sarah Parker scored with assists going to Amanda Marsh and Katie Dosch. South would score again on a beautiful solo effort by league point leader, Ali Morawski at 5:34 of the second period. Cranbrook would score their first just 17 seconds later with a goal from Ariel Magidson and an assist went to Liz Belen. Then, 59 seconds later, Cranbrook Captain, Tarasai Karega would tie the game with an unassisted goal of her own. The third period would go scoreless and regulation would end in a 2-2 tie. The defense of both teams played great all night long, especially the goalies, South’s Whitney Hughes and Cranbrook’s Hilary Schreiber. The first overtime session would come and go. Then at 3:34 of overtime, with both teams exhausted, Cranbrook’s Karega fired a slap shot to end the game. It was the longest final in league history but just another classic battle between South and Cranbrook. It was also the most competitive playoff race in league history with eight overtime periods, three overtime games and six one-goal games. Thanks to all the players, coaches, parents, family and friends for a great week. Also, many thanks to the Northville Tournament Committee and Novi Ice Arena staff for hosting yet another fantastic series. imageimage

2006 State Final March 2006

We were close.... Started off with Audrey stickhandling 1-0. South answered. Ariel got one back. South answered again. Two times with the lead, but we couldn't hold off the potent South offense. Every time we got a good chance on offense... South scored on the counter-attack. We hit posts, missed bounces, hit the goalie and missed the net. If only.... Great game girls... we really enjoyed watching you this season!

Girls move on to the Semi-Finals!

Posted by Paul Gard at Mar 5, 2007 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Big win over Northville 7-1 and we are in the State Semi-Finals on Thursday! The game Monday started out great! On the first shift Ariel Magidson spotted Liz Belen in front, passed it, Liz tipped in and the girls were up 1-0. Next it was Danielle Calangelo passing it to Ariel, backhand shot 2-0. (Happy Birthday Ariel) Then with Carolyn Gard in the penalty box, Ariel battled her way into the Northville zone, flipped a hard shot at the net and it went in over the goalie's right shoulder, 3-0. Late in the first Carolyn carried the puck up the ice, beat the "D" wide, cut in and buried the backhand 4-0. The first ended with the girls killing a 5 on 3. Northville scored one in the second, Catherine LaGrasso made a bunch of important saves but Northville wouldn't go away. The third however, was all CK. Ari took one up the ice, gained the zone and fired a perfect shot from the top of the circle 5-1. Kelsey and Anna C wrestled the puck from defenders behind the Northville goal and found Ariel with a perfect pass, 6-1. Carolyn finished the scoring when Audrey set her up perfectly at the point, rifling the shot inside the far post 7-1. Ariel and Catherine earned Co-MVP's of the game. Offense, defense and goaltending all played really well. Way to go Girls!!! Next is Ladywood on Thursday.
