Potomac SA Bypasses Internationals/Coach as USSF U16 Academy Team

Posted by Alan Olson on Jun 27 2007 at 05:00PM PDT
25 Jun. '07. Potomac SA announced that the new U16 Academy team will be coached by Josh Shapiro, men's Asst. Coach of Georgetown, and club coach of the current U18 Potomac Cougars. The U16/Internationals' Coach Pete Mehlert was also considered for the position but Potomac SA President, Arnold Tarzy, advised that Shapiro was selected primarily since Coach Mehlert was also the head coach of three Potomac SA teams, the U14/Real, U16/Internationals and U17/Cougars, and the new Academy team coach should be unencumbered with any other responsibilities in order to focus solely on the new Academy team. The Internationals will meet with families/players to decide the direction in which the team will now proceed, and it is most likely it will remain intact as a non-Academy PSA club team and participate in traditional league/tournaments as a bona fide strong/competitive contender to provide further exposure to college coaches to evaluate players in any arena of play the team will participate. Potomac SA will soon announce tryouts to form the new U16 and U18 Academy teams. PSA website: www.potomacsoccer.org.
