West Surrey Youth League Cup Semi-Final

Posted by Vic Locke at Jan 12, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Carshalton FC 4 Westfield 1 On a windy wet day 'Field started very strongly, playing with the wind at thier backs they looked the better side for most of the first half, their good play was rewarded when Dean Hayward-Brown's good run on the right saw him recieve the ball from Flavio Cappiello and fire them in front. Shortly afterwards Sam Lewiston who started the game very well had a great chance to make it two nil, but clean through on goal he shot wide. A good move out from the back then saw Carshalton go the length of the pitch and score after a goalmouth scramble to take the sides in 1-1 at half time. There was nothing to choose between the sides early in the second half, before a long throw into the box was flicked on and sailed over Liam Stone in the 'Field goal to put Carshalton on front. It was always going to be difficult from that stage on playing into the wind against a very strong Carshalton side, indecision in the box then gifted Carshalton a third followed by a last min fourth to confirm their passage into the final. Squad: Liam Stone, Steve Buckland, Joe Taylor, James Barrett, David Shutt, Mike Robson, Max Galbraith, Dean Hayward-Brown, Sam Lewiston, Flavio Cappiello, Jamie Folley. Subs: Mark Robson, Nick Worsley, James Kealy.

A excellent first half performance against a fired up Carshalton side saw 'Field put the dissapointment of the previous weeks performance behind them. The first goal came after Jamie Folley wipped in a cross-shot that the keeper could not hold and Mike Robson was on hand to give his side the lead, a thumping header from Dean Hayward-Brown made it two and Folley after being released by an excellent ball from Sam Lewiston fired home low and hard to make it three. The second half was always going to be harder but powerful defending from Steve Buckland and Dave Shutt and a very assured display in goal from Liam Stone saw 'Field comfortably retain their advantage while still playing some good stuff going forward. The only down side of the day was a nasty hip injury to Tom Bentley which we hope is better soon. Squad: Liam Stone, Mark Robson, Steve Buckland, David Shutt, James Kealy, Mike Robson, Max Galbraith, Dean Hayward-Brown, Joe Taylor, Sam Lewiston, Jamie Folley. Subs: Tom Bentley, Nick Worsley, Ross Melinn.

Carshalton FC 3 Westfield FC 0

'Field were well beaten by a good Carshalton FC side on Sunday. The early exchanges were fairly even, before an opening goal on ten min's saw Carshalton really take the upper hand and totally dominate the rest of the half, deservedly going in 3-0 up at half time, only centre back James Barrett showed any real resistance. 'Field came out far more determined in the second half and looked far more solid throughout the side, they still however failed to create any real chances to get back into the game while Carshalton went close on several more occasions as they comfortably claimed the 3 points. Squad: Liam Stone, Nick Worsley, Joe Taylor, James Barrett, Steve Buckland, Mike Robson, Dave Shutt, Mark Robson, Max Galbraith, Sam Lewiston, Duke Munroe. Subs: James Kealy, Tom Bentley

'Field entered this game with five players missing through injury, bizarrely four of them defenders. They need not have worried though as centre forward Sam Lewiston dropped back to centre half along side captain Joe Taylor and the pair along with Mark Robson at sweeper put in really excellent performances. 'Field played some good stuff in the first half and were rewarded when Taylor found Flavio Cappiello on the left, his pinpoint cross was met by Duke Munroe who planted a fine header into the far corner to open the scoring. Jamie Folley then hit the bar with a fiecly struck free kick and 'Field went in 1-0 up at half time. Ashford's best spell was the first 15 min's of the second half pushing 'Field back and bossing the midfield. The equaliser came when a weak goal kick fell to an Ashford forward who ran on to finish well and set up an exciting finish. 'Field brought on Nick Worsley and pushed both Mark and Mike Robson into central midfield, ever reliable Max Galbraith dropping back into defence. The winner was a cracking goal, a superb cross from Folley finding Cappiello 6 yards out who calmly slotted home. Liam Stone in the home goal then made up for his earlier error with a quality save with his feet to ensure all three points. Dean Hayward-Brown deserves a mention as he must have covered ever inch of the pitch as he worked tirelssly in the 'Field cause. Squad: Liam Stone, Jamie Folley, Joe Taylor, Sam Lewiston, Mark Robson, Mike Robson, Tom Bentley, Max Galbraith, Dean Hayward-Brown, Flavio Cappiello, Duke Munroe. Subs: Nick Worsley, Ross Melinn.
