2005 LONG COURSE NATIONALS HIGHLIGHTS

MISSION VIEJO, CA - More than 50 Nova Masters swimmers competed in the United States Masters Long Course National Championships held August 11-15 at the Mission Viejo Swim Center. The team had an outstanding meet finishing 3rd in the Men's Division, and 6th in both Women's and Combined Team Scores.
Nova swimmers won 11 individual national titles including:
Dick Stewart, 65-59 - 50 & 100 Fly, 200 Fly & 200 IM (USMS National record in the 100 Fly)
Brandy Bounds, 18-24 - 800 & 1500 Free
Bernie Zeruhn, 30-34 - 100 Fly & 200 Free
Tom Angell, 65-59 - 50 & 100 Free
Dionne Caldwell, 70-74 - 50 Free
Nova also took 3 Relay National Titles:
120-159 Mixed Medley Relay

160-199 Men's Medley Relay
Frank Wasko-Gerard Von Hoffman-Paul Carter-Tim Shumate

29 Nova swimmers combined to set a total of 92 team age group records (34 womens and 58 mens). In addition, 15 new age group relay records were set.

Daily highlights and top 10 finishers:
DAY 1 RESULTS
800 Free
Brandy Bounds got the team off to an excellent start by taking the National title in the 800 Free in the 18-24 age group. Jennifer Schumacher was 3rd. 4th place age group finishers included Fiona Peterson 30-34, Tracy White 40-44, Ian Pyott 18-24, and coach Michael Collins 35-39. Libby Deschenses was 7th in 50-54, and Dan Neyenhuis cracked the top 10 with 9th in 60-64.
100 Breast
Gerard Von Hoffmann was the teams highest finisher with a 3rd in 45-49. Kim Thornton was 4th in 50-54 and Lora Granovsky was 4th in 55-59, Meg Reilly 5th in 35-39, Tracy White 6th in 40-44.
50 Free
Two more national titles for the Nova's as Tom Angell won the 65-59 and Dionne Caldwell won the 70-74. Brian Pharris had a great swim to finish 3rd in 25-29. Dean Ledger was 4th in 30-34, Paul Carter 5th in 45-49, Everett Smethurst 5th in 70-74, Wes Stone was 8th in 40-44, and Kim Thornton 9th, and Libby Deschenes 10th in 50-54.
200 Back
Jen Andrews led the team with a 3rd place in 25-29, Debbie Sutherland was 4th in 45-49, Everett Smethurst 4th in 70-74, Shaun McCartin 5th in 18-24, Hank Greenberg 6th in 55-59, Dan Neyenhuis 7th 60-61, and Michael Collins 10th in 35-39.
200 Mixed Medley Relay
The team had outstanding swims with 7 of 8 teams finishing in point scoring postions (one team was disqualified for an early take-off), and setting 4 new team relay records. Leading the way was the 120-159 team of Bernie Zeruhn, Meg Reilly, Brian Pharris, and Fiona Peterson who took the National title in their age group and a new team record. It was especially exciting since Fiona only arrived at the meet as Bernie began the backstroke lead-off leg. She quickly did a deck change from her work clothes to a suit, sprinted to the blocks, jumped up and using only adreneline as a warm up, chased down another swimmer who was 5 yards ahead to take the National title. Also setting team records were the 160 team of Sutherland-Tongate-Carter-Brown, 200-239 team of White-Von Hoffman-McCartin-Deschenes, and the 240 team of Neyenhuis-Thornton-Greenberg-Caldwell.
DAY 2 - FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
We had a smaller group for the second day of the meet, but still has some outstanding performances including 3 more National titles. Tom Angell won the 65-59 100 Free, Dick Stewart won the 65-69 50 Breast, and the 160-199 Men's Medley Relay team of Frank Wasko, Gerard Von Hoffmann, Paul Carter, and Tim Shumate led wire to wire to win by several body lengths.
DAY 3 - SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS
This was the best day of the meet so far for the Novas with 6 Nationals titles and one USMS National Record. Here's how the day went:
400 Free
Fiona Peterson broke 5:00 (4:57.91) and set a new Nova team record on her way to 3rd in 30-34. Michele Brown was 6th (5:25.70). Meg Reilly swam a solid 5:05.31 despite moving and comuting from San Diego. Libby Deschenes broke the 6:00 barrier and the 50-54 Nova Team Record with a 5:56.41. Liam Murphy, 30-34 and Michael Collins, 35-39 each finished 8th.
100 Fly
This was the best event of the meet for the team as four Nova swimmers became National Champions and set one National record. Dick Stewart broke the 65-59 USMS National record when he went 1:15.42. Paul Carter won the 45-49 in 58.90. Bernie Zeruhn won the 30-34 in 57.21, and Fiona Petersen won the 30-34 womens division in 1:12.03. Sara Frechette was 5th in 35-39 in a new team record (1:53.83). Hank Greenberg was 7th in 55-59 (1:19.77). Mark McCartin set the 50-54 team record on his way to 10th in 50-54 (1:13.44).
50 Back
Frank Wasko was the top finisher with a 2nd in 45-49 (30.39). Shaun McCartin, Tord Benner and Barb Lastelic each finished 6th. Debbie Sutherland was 7th in 45-49. Liam Murphy (30-34), Wes Stone 940-44), and Sara Frechette (35-39) placed 8th. Cameron Cosgrove was 9th (45-49), and Jen Andrews was 10th (25-29).
200 IM
Dick Stewart led the team again with a huge victory of nearly 25 yards in the 65-69 age group (2:55.29). Everett Smethurst was 3rd in 70-74 (3:35.97). Coach Paul Carter was 4th in 45-49 (2:27.89). Meg Reilly ws 5th in 35-39 (2:51.97). Barb Lastelic was 7th (3:15.76) and Sara Frechette was 10th (3:53.48). Hank Greenberg was 10th in 55-59 (3:14.00)
200 Mixed Free Relay
Four Nova Relays placed in the top 10. Leading the was was the 120-159 team of Felipe Delgado, Michele Brown, Fiona Petersen, and Bernie Zeruhn who won their age group and shattered the Nova Team record by 4 seconds (1:49.14). The 200-239 team of Gerard Von Hoffmann, Heather Phillip, Libby Deschenses, and Mark McCartin finished 6th and set a new team record (2:06.07). Right behind them in 7th was the B team of Anastasia Hamilton, Lee Jessup, Tom Angell, & Tim Shumate. The 160-199 team of Paul Carter, Debbie Sutherland, Barb Lastelic, & Frank Wasko finished 7th on their way to a new team record.
DAY 4 - SUNDAY HIGHLIGHTS

1500 Free
Brandy Bounds won a closed battle to win the 18-24 age group by less than a second for her 2nd National title of the meet. Dionne Caldwell completed her outstanding meet with a 2nd in 70-74. Fiona Petersen broke her own team record on her way to 2nd in 30-34.
