HHS DEFEATS HILLSBORO 12-1

Posted by Andy Gilley on Mar 29 2015 at 05:00PM PDT

It took just five innings for Hendersonville’s baseball team to rack up 12 hits and earn a blowout win over host Hillsboro on Friday.

The Commandos rolled to a 12-1 win in a game that ended after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

“I’m happy for them,” Hendersonville coach Mike Hendrix said. “It’s a W and we’ll move on to the next one.”

After holding Hendersonville (11-2) scoreless in the top of the first, Hillsboro watched its first three batters reach base before a pick-off at second. A Michael Mootry sacrifice fly gave Hillsboro (3-3) a 1-0 lead, but that was all the Burros managed to take away from a bases-loaded, no-out situation.

The first-inning run proved to be all the Burros were allowed as Hendersonville pitcher Austin Brown settled in.

“I struggled to find the strike zone in the first inning, but after that I started settling down and after that it was just throwing strikes and getting outs,” Brown said. “I started feeling the strike zone a little more. It started coming to me and then I just got in a groove.”

Hendersonville wiped off the first-inning deficit, blowing the game wide open over the next two innings, taking a 10-1 lead after a four-run second and six-run third inning.

“We’ve been working on making the adjustment from a slow pitcher to a fast pitcher all year, and we finally made the connection in this game,” Hendersonville’s Drew Richard said. “We haven’t been able to put up that many runs on any team, but I guess today we finally figured it out.”

Richard finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Commandos.

Costly mistakes hurt Hillsboro as the Burros committed six errors, hit three batters and walked two.

“We hit the ball, but they made plays and we didn’t,” Hillsboro coach Andrew Bello said. “We kind of threw the ball around a little bit, and they capitalized on it. It hurts when you put runners on base for no reason. They get a hit and then the flood gates start to go.

“We kind of rattled (Brown) a little bit early, but with a team like that you’ve got to earn it to beat them.”
