Posted by Andy Gilley on Jan 02 2019 at 04:00PM PST

Hayden Mullins decided he could play college baseball two years ago as a high school sophomore at Hendersonville. He will get that opportunity in the SEC starting with the 2019-20 school year. Mullins was one several athletes from Sumner County to sign letters of intent this past week.Mullins, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound left-handed pitcher signed with Auburn this past week.

“My sophomore year is when I knew I could be pretty good at this,” Hayden Mullins said. “I kept getting bigger, stronger and threw harder. That’s when the colleges started looking at me. “Vandy, Tennessee, and Auburn were my top three. I grew up a huge Tennessee fan, and I’m still a Tennessee football fan, and my family are Tennessee fans, but when I went down to Auburn and met with Coach (Butch) Thompson, I knew that was the place for me.“

Auburn has great facilities and academics. Coach Thompson treats his players well, and it was just a feeling knowing that I belonged at Auburn."

Mullins says the Boston Red Sox are his favorite team and Dodgers ace, Clayton Kershaw is his favorite player. Hendersonville baseball coach Mike Hendrix believes Mullins has the tools to make it to the big leagues.“Let’s tell like it is a man, he (Mullins) has made me a good coach,” Hendrix said. “Auburn is gonna run him out there every four or five days as we do, and they are going to get an outstanding pitcher. “Hayden has a terrific fastball, probably between 91-94, he’s got an excellent breaking ball, he’s working on a change. I’m sure Auburn will try adding another pitch to Hayden’s arsenal, but I hope he keeps throwing the fastball.”
