Clear Lake 87 - La Porte 49
Clear Lake Prevails Over La PorteFeature Article by Brooks Kubena
The Clear Lake Falcons start off the season 2-0 after defeating La Porte (0-2) 87-49. La Porte guard Michael Hobbs scored the first points of the game on a three pointer, but after junior Lake guard Alden Miles answered with a three of his own, La Porte would never lead again. Clearly outmatched, La Porte could not get within 30 points of the Falcons after halftime.
Lake Head Coach Tommy Penders was pleased with his team’s play.“We played good team ball” said Penders. “We moved the ball well and it’s hard to score on us. So when you have that combination we’re pretty difficult to beat. When we have a team that’s a little more talented we don’t get wrapped into individual play we try to stay playing as a team and I think that’s one thing we’re doing early in the year. This game could’ve easily become sloppy but we stayed within ourselves and I was really pleased with that.”
Alden Miles, who scored 20 points in the season opener against Milby, continued his success on the court with 20 points including five three pointers. Paris Clayton scored 16 of his 18 in the first half. Senior guard Robert Lewis scored 18 and added another charge taken to his high school career, a school record which he tied last year with 38 charges drawn.
With the score 52-27 at halftime, and Penders resting most of his starters, the Falcons still continued to dominate. Lake’s talent on the bench was evident through freshman Jordan Davis who scored 7 points when he re-entered the game in the third period.
The team’s depth is evident to senior guard Rob Lewis. “Pretty much our whole team can all score.” Lewis said. “I think we have one of the deepest benches in Houston, as far as guard play and big man play. You can take out our whole five and put in our 13th to 14th man and things keep picking up as far as defense and offense goes. You can see we’re a well rounded team and anyone can score from our guards to our big men.”
Lewis, a co-captain of the team and third year varsity veteran, knows the ropes of high school basketball and after leading the team into the playoffs last year, he and his teammates are pushing for more.
“With this team there’s not too many days of practice where we aren’t pushing each other and going hard.” Lewis said. “But this team, we know what we have and we know we can go to State this year. So we push each other and really our coach doesn’t even need to push us in practice because we’re so motivated to do it ourselves.”
The Falcons will have to be motivated next week when they head to Fort Bend Marshall (2-2). Marshall beat Lake in a close one a year ago. “I think we were better than them last year and we just made some young mistakes and they beat us.” Lewis said. “I feel the same this year. I feel like we’re better than them and I feel like we’re a much better team this year, so I think we’ll go in and steal a win from them if we do everything and play how we know how to play.”
